In sum, performing tricks. It is to sport what twirling drumsticks is to music.

I guess there weren't enough sports in the Winter Olympics for rich people.

Just watched a couple of clips. Such a lame event. Kind of like a mix between downhill and lame skateboard tricks, even includes rail slides. Picture the half pipe, but much slower and with far less air. The coolest part was watching the camera man on skis going down the hill with the snowboarders.

I really, really hope that there isn't a bombing or something that goes on during this thing. I'm sitting in high level meetings regarding contingency plans for Sochi and, just yea.

I can't discuss specifics, but use your imagination.

This is a very good real-time example of when it is best (and it's always best) to ignore the media spin and look what the athletes are doing. And the athletes are all telling their families to stay at home and not go to Sochi. Not just Canadian athletes; athletes from all over. Coincidence? Far more likely that the various National Olympic Committees, if not their governments and/or the IOC, have advised the families to stay home. No accident that, on the same day, a large number of athletes from Canada, Sweden, Finland, etc etc, all rather quietly announced that their families won't be accompanying them. Clearly something was said. Or done.

That'll tell you the situation over there is waythefuck more serious than "take precautions".

I can't imagine who you gonna bomb if there is an attack. Probably North Korea. 'Cause their imaginations are better than mine.

Must be a couple of boats filled with Marines and helicopters in the Black Sea by now.

Well, I can neither confirm nor deny that, but I can tell you I've been hearing this referenced in these briefings:

Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits

Those German rigs look like leftover clothing from Vancouver 2010. Really. Identical colors.

The American outfits are hideous. Trying to do too much. Busier than a NASCAR. The blank canvas pants are a terrible contrast. One way or the other, guys.

In other news . . . Canada is effectively telling its citizens to stay home.

yeah I listen to a lot of Sportsnet Radio and those guys who were the rights holder for Vancouver and London are really glad CBC is going this time. Sportsnet will show some stuff but their anchors will be in Toronto.

Hard to imagine a less enticing place to travel to for the Olympics than Sochi.

A summer resort in winter surrounded by more troops than defended Stalingrad. But, as one who works from home most days, a lot of weird and potentially exciting sports to watch.

So thanks to the taxpayers of russia for spending $50 billion so I can watch bobsled heats with my morning coffee.

Watched the Harding-Kerrigan 30for30 last night. It was pretty good, and dang if Harding comes off as very unsympathetic and bitter.

One such report. You forgot to mention "indeterminate amount(s) of semen".

Olympic Coverage
Last night, after midnight, I saw that all two dozen or so (yes, that many) CBC feed channels were active. Telus Optik has given an entire block to CBC coverage and I'm assuming the other providers have as well. Anyway, it was impressive; midnight here, noon there, middle of the night in eastern Canada. Some of the channels were clearly recording bulk/stock footage for later use; editing together segments and whatnot. Others had practice events going on (men's downhill skiing was very impressive). You could see the camera positions being adjusted on the hill for best angles, etc. No announcers ever (sports is infinitely better with no announcers), just the background noise of Russian winter interspersed with the occasional distant sound of Russian disco. (Call it я-pop?) The HD looked stellar. The alpine venues look great, world class. Get used to seeing coyи everywhere. And just like Vancouver, the host city doesn't have a flake of snow on the ground.

Could you Canucks post some of the place we could find this online coverage? I can make it look like my computer is in Canada, and I'd really like to watch preliminaries of the 10K XC races.

Well played CBC. The video is blocked outside of Canada, but not before I got to see two commercials! Now, off to find a feed for Republic of Doyle!
