Given the size and talent of your forwards, you wonder how good the team could be if they didn't play half their games valuing attempted intimidation as much or more than creating and sustaining offense. This seems like the safest theory as to why Flyers always do better after they move on; they just focus on playing hockey rather than some carrying on a bullshit macho legacy from 35 years ago.

(As for Lucic, a Bruins fan texted "holy shit did you see that" and I wrote back "let me guess, Lucic just ran a smaller skilled guy or a goalie". Pretty close for not even having the game on. Lucic is the shittiest kind of shithead, the one who doesn't have to do it but can't help him. Should start a new team of them with Perry and Neal and Hartnell and those types.)

The NHL is really serious. Lucic fined 5000.

Not just disciplinary decisions but even on ice ones.
Did you all see the Seabrook hit on Backes today? Backes gets crushed behind the net, two refs on the ice (one standing 5 feet away) and neither raise their arms. In fact Keith takes the puck and clears the zone. It's only the fact that a scuffle started that the whistle blew. Then after all the commotion, the refs get together and go 'oh shit, he's hurt really bad we better kick Seabrook out."

Really? An after-the-fact penalty? Can you imagine if in the NFL a player got hit out of bounds and there was no flag. Then they go over and find out the receiver ran into a camera and hurt himself, lets add 15 yards and eject the guy. Or a soccer ref calling a penalty shot after an argument.

The NHL is ridiculous.

well, the series doesn't get interesting until the home team loses a game. and tomorrow's game just lost a little interest.

You're just jealous that Bourque had an amazing game here instead of in Calgary. it only took two years but that deal finally paid off.

Yeah, he's mostly been shitty here. That's why everyone was so surprised when he got two goals in one game. he had 16 points in 63 games before that. As much as I don't like Therrien, he's done a good job with the lineup recently.

I was there. Good seats for a shit show. We left with about 10 minutes left. I was drinking and talking and not paying a ton of attention, but it didn't seem like the Lightning were ever in the game.

On the flipside, did anyone else watch the Rangers game yesterday. I'm still curious how, post-whistle, Simmonds boarding Dorsett and Hartnell taking down D. Moore and punching him was offsetting 4:00s for the teams. Just a matter of "c'mon, they've taken so many penalties already, we can't keep calling this, ok", right?

Yes.

hockey is situational reffing. Penalties in the first but no penalties in overtime. If we had to call a penalty in overtime we better call one on the other team as soon as possible to make it fair.

Yesterday after Montreal got the early goal and a 4 minute penalty (which was also called after the fact cause Ginota didn't get up) a Montreal guy actually got hacked but the commentator said "so much has been against the Lightning already the refs couldn't call another one"

Isn't that ridiculous? It's the refs job to administer the laws of the game, not keep the game even.

I didn't see the game, just the video afterwards. Was it a late ref call or did a linesman come in to help? Either way, I have trouble getting too worked up over an obviously right call being made, especially in that instance.

There was no call at all. In fact if Backes had gotten up there would have be no call.
They're punishing the result, not the act.

Again it would be like in football if there was a penalty without a flag thrown.

Well, there was a call and it was a major so help was allowed. That's what I'm asking, did the refs consult the videoboard (or fans) or did a linesman who didn't have his head up his ass rush in w/ the call?

Neither.

After the hit play continued and then there was a scuffle. Once they got Backes off the ice then they decided Backes was hurt badly so we better call something.

They called it charging which it wasnt. They just had to make it something but really they had no idea.

You can't defend that Seabrook hit. He left his feet and the initial point of contact was to the head. A deserved suspension.

Seabrook has been suspended 3 games.

-----

I'm not defending the hit. My issue is the incompetency of the refs in the NHL. The ref was looking right at it but didn't call a penalty because

A) The Blackhawks were already shorthanded.
B) It was late in the 3rd period of a close game
C) The hit wasn't that bad

But then all hell breaks loose, Steen attacks Seabrook, other players get into a scuffle and the whistle finally blows. They see that Backes can't get up and is concussed so 'oh shit, we better call something now, it must have been bad". Now this particular hit was certainly dirty with the new rules of the game to protect head hits but I've seen this happen when the hit was clean but the player was hurt so we gotta do something.

I'm probably old school but refs need to make calls on the spot or not at all. Using football again when a QB gets hit to the head the flag comes out immedately or it doesn't. The next time a QB gets hit in the head and the ref lets it go but then goes back to administer a 15 yard penalty cause the QB didn't get up will be the first.

oh and it can't be interference, Backes had the puck (or over skated it). From Seabrook's angle, it would be hard to see that Backes had not gained the puck.

Another point. Ken Hitchcock said the knee on Sobotka was much worse then the hit on Backes but because Sobotka is not hurt there is no suspension.
Meanwhile, the NHL will not issue any supplemental discipline for Chicago forward Bryan Bickell, who was whistled for kneeing Vladimir Sobotka with 6:05 remaining in regulation.

"The hit on Sobotka, there was a similar hit on (Alex Pietrangelo) in the first period that was really concerning by the same player," Hitchcock said. "When you're leg-whipping people, it's a concern because that's career-ending. That's something you don't want to see on either side.

"That's a big concern for me, the safety of the players. That part bothers me more than ... the hit on (Backes) is a hit that went awry. But the hit on Sobotka was a continuation of what happened to Petro in the first period."

The lack of a consistent standard grabs my groin, too. Last night was interesting in the Sharks/Kings game. They let them play without calling hardly any penalties for the first two periods. But then when the score got one-sided and the game started getting really chippy, they started calling the physical play tightly.

The only thing that consoles me is that officiating in basketball is even worse.

You can't take the Matt Cooke out of Matt Cooke.

By the way, Raffi Torres is looking great for the Sharks right now. But, I'm very worried that it's only a matter of time before Raffi Torres pulls a bonehead Raffi Torres stunt, again.

Actually, surprised you haven't heard, Matt Cooke is reformed and that means you're supposed to pretend nothing he ever did previously can be held against him. He's pretty much a new player with a blank slate that should still be blank after tonight because he's a new player.

I wasn't able to watch the game, but I'm not really bitching about the suspension either. It's too bad, but I remember being pretty righteous in my indignation over the hit on Hossa a few years ago and Seabrook before that. So I have to take my lumps on this one.

Roy looks like he's gonna flip his lid if another player goes to the dressing room. (Barrie, Benoit and now Bordeleau)
