Nice, I'd never seen a reverse-angle video of the play.

I thought I had given my wife a heart attack just two days after we were married when I started screaming like a mad man at 6:30 in the morning.
Wrong tournament. The algeria game was on in the afternoon because I was at work.
Right tournament, wrong time. I was thinking of the Germany game that I got kicked out of a sports book while watching.

I did wake her up, but it was closer to 8 or so in Vegas. The game started at 16:00 local time, I believe.

It occurs to me you may have been in a different time zone. Sorry for making ssumptions. Was just thinking of South Korea world cup where matches were in the AM.

Yeah, I was thinking it was earlier, but it was on in the late morning in Saint Louis (where I was watching it). We had moved a meeting to the pub next door to work to watch the game and "work". End of that game would have been about 1 p.m. I think (Think it was a 11 a.m. CT start, give or take an hour

That's one of those games where I'll almost definitely never forget where I was, even if I don't necessary remember the time, etc.

I was at a bar and a friend's wife, who was breastfeeding a block and a half away and across the street, said it sounded like she was inside when they scored. It was very great.

That call gets made everytime. If the ball touches your hand and your hand is away from your body it is a foul. You arms/hands cannot be blocking space (you can't make yourself bigger)

Yep. I vividly remember that afternoon. I had just finished teaching an OS X class to a group of reporters and fortunately the conference room had a TV in it. As soon as the training was over, I turned on the game. It was in the 77th minute. At first I was the only one watching it, but gradually people started to come into the room. By the time Donovan scored, I think the entire office was in there. Everyone cheered in unison ... I'm sure people in nearby offices were wondering what the hell was going on.

I still get chills when I watch the video of that goal.

The US-Algeria match took place during finals week at school during the regime of an administrator who preferred to schedule finals by subject rather than period of the day and so he was a stickler for ultra-attentive faculty proctors and a very orderly administration of finals.

Social Studies had the 2-hour 7:45 exam after which we had the next exam period to grade rather than proctor, so all 10 ofus met in our social studies office, found and illegal stream,'and projected on the end wall which we shared with a science class, which started their final exam at 10:15.

The whole game were grading and bullshitting about the game, not causing a ruckus until that play. We jumped out of our chairs and went ballistic and then came to our senses that the science exam was kind of wrapping and we got quiet enough to hear the FUCKING CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE FROM ALMOST EVERY ROOM IN THE HALLWAY! it was surreal, proctors didn't give a fuck.
B and the administrator was leaving at the end of the year so he didn't give a shit.

Good times.

Think of the children!!!!

I watched in a chain Irish Pub, which was packed. Most of the TVs were on the US, one or two on the England game. There were a handful of Englishmen next to me, rooting against the US, especially after the England game ended first. The place went apeshit, I hugged a lot of strangers, and the English dudes had huge grins and applauded. I still get chills, too. This stands alone with the Bill Buckner play as the two greatest moments in sports.

I don't know how anyone can root for Portugal. They don't deserve to be in the final, and fucking Ronaldo. I really don't find anything unlikable about the French team. I like watching Pogba and Payet, and despite being a superstar at Spurs, I really like Lloris' game. Throw in Koscielny and the meaty French forehead of Olivier Giroud, and it's a no-brainer.

I was working for a nonprofit at the time, so it was kind of easy to convince the CEO (and, more importantly, the CFO) that we should do some bonding over world cup games. So we headed over to a fairly random D.C. hotel around the block to watch the U.S. play England and Slovenia. It was kind of tortuous for me, because I lose my shit watching US games, and I had to keep it together around this group. But, progressively, folks that were kind of "meh, this is a forced work HAVE FUN" activity started to really get into it.

So, when LD put that ball in the net... we collectively lost our shit. The staff at the hotel had kind of gotten used to us and we'd become chummy. I don't think any of them were born in the states (there's a very heavy west african bent to hotel service in D.C.), but they were right there with us shouting and hugging... even some tears.

Of course not. The tradition is an envelope stuffed with cash, in the mens room underneath the grandstand.
