I think I read a Reddit AMA or at least some sort of Q&A somewhere that asked directly "How does it feel that your videos are just free to watch time and time again?"

The answer was "I got paid for the scene. Ask the distribution company."

So yeah, I agree. No idea where the business model is or how it's sustainable. Seems like the tube sites are samples and if you want to join that's how they make money.

But torrents still exist, so I don't know. I guess with worldwide access there are people that pay for it regardless.

Jon Ronson did a podcast series "The Butterfly Effect" that was far too long, but it focussed on the porn industry and discussed how the company that runs PornHub and other sites have changed everything for the industry.

One interesting episode looked at how some actors make money by making custom videos for rich guys.

But again, these exclusive videos often end up streaming for free as well...

How does Hollywood do it? Are they so rich that piracy is just a dent in the bottom line? Or are they so rich that they can sue.

Having porn for free everywhere has killed the features. There are no "Vivid Girls" anymore. They're all amateur and independent.
You'd think this would be good for producers as they don't have to pay their girls as much. But then, nobody is buying either.

I'd suggest that unlike porn viewing, Hollywood film viewing is a communal experience. And there's not much demand for "MILFs and Stepsons" in imax.

Also, since the people who make smut can't really afford big time lawyers and monitors to see what is being pirated, they are a much easier target.

At the root of the problem is also the fact that (as I imagine) the average porn viewer isn't watching for 2 hours. He's probably online for a few minutes or so and ultimately it doesn't matter if the sorority sisters or fake taxi drivers are shown in crystal clear HD or if they were shot on a smartphone.
