The fucking Coke commercial has that whistling tune that Darryl Hannah kept doing in Kill Bill engrained in my head. Is that from anything else or just something Tarantino came up with?

Zags coach is Mark Few, right?

He looks like a young Burgess Meredith. Or, rather, that he'll turn into Grumpy Old Men era Burgess Meredith.

In more shitty announcing news, Nantz just wondered if Duke can back into a game in which they are down by 4 points at halftime.

Mark Few is clearly one of the top half-dozen college BB coaches this century and he's going to sail into Springfield*. It's really a damn shame that he hasn't been able to capture the big one. I was really pulling for them as just a justification of them, instead of losing out and continuing the ridiculous narrative that they are chokers.

* And FYI, looking down the list of college coaches, a title isn't required for enshrinement, as the rightfully enshrined John Chaney, Guy Lewis, Vivian Stringer, and Eddie Sutton can attest to.

But, but...when you come in as the top overall seed, not winning kind of is a choke. I know it's a crapshoot, and fuck Arkansas and their "play hard defense but don't foul" which is bullshit the same way it is with Wisconsin. That said, I swear those rims or something were not right. So many shots in that arena was hysterically bad.

Yeah, agree on Gonzaga... They're no longer allowed to claim the underdog mantle, so shitting the bed in the Sweet 16 round shouldn't just be shrugged off.

Having watched them 5 or 6 times this season, that team was overrated.

Houston is going to go to the line 9 times and Villanova will shoot 44% from behind the arc. I’ve seen this before.

I'll agree that they're no longer an underdog, and frankly haven't really been considered one for close to a decade. They are considered a major program that happens to be in a mid-major conference. Similar to the Calipari Memphis teams. But (after really only watching the second half) I wouldn't consider last night them shitting the bed. Maybe I'm more forgiving, but I think as a #1 or #2 seed, you should make the Sweet Sixteen but at that point it becomes a crapshoot. If Gonzaga figuratively took a dump on the court than sure, label this team chokers. But a relatively close loss to a top 20 team on a neutral court I don't see as a huge indictment.

Final fours are the standard. Beyond that it's a crapshoot. Not fair to judge championships but totally fair to expect sweet sixteens and be judged on final fours.

There was that, there were shots from the baseline that hit the backboard, there were a lot of threes that clanged off, etc.

The #1 overall seed has a, what 25% chance of winning the whole thing? At best?

I get that #1 seeds in theory should make the Final Four, but they only do at about a 40% rate. It doesn't make you a choker to miss out. Most do! And Gonzaga literally made the title game last year. And again just a few years before that.

Championships are great and they are certainly important, but they are fickle. Dean Smith was supposedly a choker for a long time until he wasn't. Roy Williams too. Tom Izzo hasn't won in over 20 years. And yet guys like Kevin Ollie and Jim Harrick won one.

I have the xW by seed through like 2017 or 2018 somewhere. I want to say the #1 seeds were in the high 3s or low 4s, so a Sweet 16 bow out is definitely underperforming.

Yeah, for programs with annual aspirations it's probably binary. You're either a choker or you finally get one. Some people get one early enough to not have to wear the collar.

As a UK fan, final fours count as much to me almost as much as titles because winning six games is hard no matter what. And cal was considered an underperformer/choker as well for a long time.

(I think Purdue wins by 15+)

I’m at Citizens Bank Park now to pick up a swag bag for a 5K I’m running tomorrow. In a total show of synergy, Comcast chartered a biplane towing an add saying “#strutup Peacocks” in reference to both St. Peter’s in their Sweet 16 game across the street, and their streaming platform. Even I have to admit that’s crafty.

It was a bummer (not for everyone...there's a lot of Zag Hate out there for some reason) that they lost last night, but I wasn't that surprised. They were a good team, but not near as good as last year. Turns out losing two guards in the NBA draft (Suggs and Kespert) makes a huge difference. My daughter paid for a VPN so she could watch the game from Europe, and she was bummed, but then said 'but hey...I'm in Italy'.

I'll be interested in how they are next year. I think its obvious that Chet will leave (although I think he'd benefit from staying for another year), and likely Timme will as well (I'd be less surprised if he stayed. His game is not a fit for the NBA, and he makes a ton of NIL money from local Spokane businesses, including a casino). No idea what the recruiting class looks like, but Tommy Lloyd was the key recruiter for them for years, and losing him has got to have an impact.

Peacocks to the Elite Eight would have to have had longer odds than 83 NC State or 85 Nova to win, right?

Well, you got your digs in on the Mountain West, Brian. Nobody is marking them down as a power conference in this tournament!

By the way, how's the Big Ten doing, with their nine bids and all those high seeds?
