In this case I'm fortunate. Girls that I dated over the last year want nothing do to do with me. Wouldn't even reply if I texted them.

So I just delete their number and make it easy on myself.

They are all outgoing, driven, independent, love their job, love to travel and love animals. They all have a pictures of themselves at a restaurant, doing an activity or travelling somewhere in the world.

Do you guys find this too?

Absolutely. They all seem to sound exactly the same. I was ready to change my profile to say that I hated travelling, hated my family....and really really really hated to laugh.

Etiquette question: Trying something again with a girl from earlier this year. I can't figure out what stage we're in, but it's between the point of "first few dates" and "serious relationship."

Her birthday is tomorrow. I am seeing her Wednesday after going to her birthday thing Saturday night. Am I good with simply a birthday message tomorrow and a follow up token or something Wednesday? Or do I need to do something tomorrow? (I've already made clear that I'm paying for whatever we do Wednesday)

I ask because I feel there's a lot of "too little" ground one way and "too much" ground the other way while I'm not sure how big the middle portion is.

I'm still so shy, can't quite shake my fear yet.

Last few weeks I've seen a nice girl on the train going home almost everyday.
We've smiled and acknowledged each other and finally on Friday there was an empty seat beside her and and sat down said hi, talked about the end of the week, weekend plans (throwaway lines you know). It was a nice conversation but she's married.

Then this morning I was sitting beside another girl who was playing 2048 on her phone. It was quite tight that we were rubbing shoulders and I could she she kept shaking her head cause she couldn't get very far. I was so tempted to just tap her on the arm and say 'you know that game is impossible' but I couldn't do it. I don't know why.. I just couldn't muster up the courage to do it even though I know it's so easy.

I find that it's pretty quiet on trains here. Especially in the morning when everyone's tired. Going home is better, people are in a good mood. But everyone is wearing headphones (I don't) and keeping to themselves. I've actually never heard a guy approach a girl on one of my train rides (and I take it to work and back everyday). What I did on Friday, getting the girl's name and meeting her, I noticed a few eye-rolls.

As we mentioned before in this thread, perhaps I'm in a really uptight conservative corporate place. Whereas in a place like New York, single girls outnumber single guys and it's more liberal so it's easier.

I am mystified that a degree of shyness and fear persisted into my 50s. Finally (and essentially too late,) it seems to have evaporated, 99% if not completely.

In bursts over the decades my deep fear of talking to girls dissipated. In spite of many conscious efforts to overcome shyness, it seems to have drastically reduced all on its own, on its own schedule. I had a powerful, irrational fear of girls (probably fear of rejection/failure) in childhood, through high school and college, and beyond.

Fortunately, when confronted with a particularly beautiful woman/girl, or with a powerful attraction, I would spontaneously push through the fear and talk to them. But success, or failure/rejection not accompanied with the world ending would not abate my general fear.

At specific times in life, the general level of shyness seems to drop, independent of my efforts. Until finally falling to zero sometime in the last few years. The only association I can find is the sense of not giving a fuck. (I truly give no fuck whatsoever today, whether or not a woman responds to me. Zero-point-zero.)

Throughout my life, I found it inconceivable that I would ever be without this fear and shyness. Today, I can barely fathom how deeply this fear gripped me through adulthood, or adolescence for that matter, so nonsensical and so absent the feeling today. And I have no idea how it disappeared, or why at this advanced age, why not when I was younger. Wish I could bottle it, and send the bottle back in a time machine.

I literally saw them from the people across from me. Maybe I was more aware of it cause I was curious of other's reactions rather than not giving a fuck. The new style trains here are the same style as the New York subway where there are long benches along the sides (we used to have bus style seating on the older trains, 2 to a seat). So I could sit on the bench and literally look at 10-15 people on the other bench.

Howard: we could all use a time machine. I was thinking about the blonde gf I had more 10 years ago and how stupid I was. Knowing what I know now, I did everything wrong from not being confident around her in public or even while having sex. At 25 I was the most boring, scared guy in the world and was just happy to have her. I offered her nothing and was the doormat and justifiably she left me. If I could used what I know now in confidence and even aggression, it would have worked out better.
