Jules Feiffer, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and playwright, dies at 95
Some artists draw every line as if they know just where it will end. Jules Feiffer never did. Not for him the delicate feathering, diligent crosshatching or obsessive pointillism of the neurotically controlling craftsman. His lines unfurled across the page like banners of the subconscious, zooming forward, doubling back and propelling the reader's gaze (and even, you had to suspect, his own) in directions nobody could have anticipated.

Pretty great obituary in The Ringer by Franz Nicolay, the keyboardist from The Hold Steady.

The Old Man and the Keys: The Improvised Legacy of Garth Hudson
Garth Hudson wasn’t the most magnetic, the most handsome, or the most financially successful member of the Band—a group George Harrison, of all people, called “the best band in the history of the universe.” He didn’t sing or compose. Of the many words written about them, the fewest are devoted to him. He has the least screen time in The Last Waltz, the Martin Scorsese documentary of their final concert which cemented their mythology. His essentially settled and placid nature, and apparent lack of ego, made him a less obvious object of attention than the volatile and leonine Helm, the childlike Danko, the hapless Manuel, the canny Robertson. He mostly stayed out of the later Helm/Robertson blood feud. He passed through the Band’s narrative—their evolution from barnstorming bar band to super-sidemen to mystic mountain men to dissipated rock burnouts to ghost-band afterlife—seemingly unscathed, untouched by Helm’s bitterness or Manuel’s despair. He resisted, without visible effort, the chemical temptation that led to the band’s physical and musical decline. It made sense that he, the oldest member of the band, and Robertson, the youngest, would be the last ones standing—the latter ultimately protected from his indulgences by his savvy and practical-minded ambition; Hudson by his gently single-minded focus on perfecting the details of his musical vision. Meanwhile, his bandmates spoke of him with something like awe: “He could’ve been playing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra or with Miles Davis,” said Robertson, “but he was with us, and we were lucky to have him.”

Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull dies at 78
Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, her spokesperson has said.

Born in Hampstead in December 1946, she was known for hits like As Tears Go By, which reached the UK top 10 in 1964, and for starring roles in films including 1968's The Girl On A Motorcycle.

She was also famously the girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the 1960s, inspiring songs such as Wild Horses and You Can't Always Get What You Want. After a period of heroin addiction in the 70s, she resurrected her career with the classic album Broken English.
"Broken English" is a great great album.

Mariucci gave a really nice, emotional eulogy this morning for Jauron. Said he left coaching to take care of his wife, who had developed memory issues. Stuck with her every day for years (decades?) and was her primary care giver. Couldn't find video online of his comments, but it was good stuff.

Bestselling novelist Tom Robbins dies at 92
Tom Robbins dazzled millions of readers with the whimsy and imagination in his bestselling novels, such as 1984's Jitterbug Perfume, Skinny Legs and All, from 1990, and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, a 1976 book adapted by director Gus Van Sant into a 1993 film.

Really odd timing as I'm going through the podcast "60 Songs That Explain the 90s", and the last one I listened this week to was about "Juicy" where the host talked about her a lot.
