ruled no goal inconclusive

And the camera isn't directly over the red line, so the puck is even more in the net than it appears.
If the puck looks at least 99% over the line from that angle, then if you were directly overhead, it would undoubtedly be across the line.

What I can never understand is if tennis has the technology for millimeter-accurate line calls with a ball moving just as fast (with shape compression!) then why can't hockey?

One is cost, I think it's $100,000 per court in tennis. You'd have to do this for 32 arenas year round.
The bigger issue is congestion and accuracy. A tennis player never blocks hawkeye seeing the ball. In hockey, the puck could be under 3 guys.
This is argument for football too. How do you use technology to spot the ball in a scrum?

But they should have better HD cameras in the net to see things that aren't blocked!

Do the outer courts at tennis events have the tech? If so, i'm calling bullshit on NHL teams not being able to install it in a (relatively) fixed location that would have to be readjusted before each game depending on the venue's schedule, but I'd say the Tennis ones have to be recalibrated regularly anyway. And the answer from a technology standpoint has to be related to a "thread" that goes around the puck/ball that would trigger the light when the entirety of the signal breaks the goal mouth (Although there could be some fuckups if it hits the back of the net, but the nerds can figure that out). That seems much easier on hockey with a puck vs. the oblate spheroid of the football, but footballs do at least already have thread in them.

ETA: I can't confirm my stance without one of Keith Yandle/Gritty cosigning.

If the puck is blurry from speed, the blur out of the net is wrong and the blur furthest in the net is right, no? So just overlay a puck shape touching the furthest in and be done.

Would be awesome if Ovi got a hat-trick and broke the record tonight.

Career high 18% shooting percentage this season. How many more seasons he can keep up the pace, or that he wants to keep playing. I would love to see him continue to get 1-year deals with the Caps to continue playing while he's still producing. Would be remarkable to see a guy in his early 40s scoring 35-50 every year.

It would be funnier if he didn’t quite get the record this season, while Gretzky followed him around from arena to arena to witness it.

An amazing accomplishment and more so because Ovi isn’t even in the top 5 players of all-time. Was trying to think of a comp in other sports of an iconic record being broken and Pete Rose breaking Cobb’s hits record is all that comes close

Hank Aaron breaking the home run record?

When Gretzky originally broke Howe's record it was a big deal.

Fuck, that’s better I think. Does one thing as well as any contemporary ever did, does lots of other stuff great too but you wouldn’t rank them top 5 in terms of completeness.

I think you people are selling both Ovi and the Hammer short. I feel like you can make a case that they the 4th best in each of their respective sports (assuming we’re just talking position players).
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.

Aaron, I agree. Ovi, no.

Gretzky. Howe and Orr are on the Mount Rushmore along with Lemieux probably (whose stats would have been better if not for his cancer).

Ovi is #5 at best and you could make an argument for any number of guys there including Lidstrom, Hull, Jagr. Maybe even Crosby or Yzerman.

At least I'm not seeing a bunch of "he only broke the record because of power play goals and empty netters." Such a lazy "take."

(And the, at this point cliched response: "Yeah, but if he had played when Gretzky played, he'd have 1000 goals... The goalies were terrible and had tiny pads!")

Ovi is a generational player. I think folks forget how incredibly physical he was for the first, I dunno, 8 years of his career, at least. He got away with some charges and boarding no calls, but for the most part he trucked guys clean and fair and he was a menace.

Early in his career, he scored some truly astounding goals on breakaways and open ice. Yes, he has adapted his game to being a more standard left winger, waiting to unleash his patented shot. That has not always been the case. HIs skill and dynamism was remarkable to watch.

Aaron is 17th in PA adjusted WAR among all players with 7,500 career PAs (only 364, would have guessed more). He's an all-time great, no-brainer top 25, but I don't think there's any real argument for top 5 (Ruth, Bonds, Mays, Williams were all absolutely better and I can more easily come up with 10 more before I can argue Aaron for #5. Even if you limit the scope to stats after Jackie debuted, Mantle and Schmidt are both higher adjusted for PA. And we didn't even bring in pitchers. That feels like a really good Ovechkin comp.

fWAR per 1,000 PA:
Babe Ruth: 15.7
Rogers Hornsby: 13.6
Ted Williams: 13.3
Barry Bonds: 13
Lou Gehrig: 12
Willie Mays: 11.9
Honus Wagner: 11.8
Ty Cobb: 11.4
Mickey Mantle: 11.3
Tristram Speaker: 10.9
Joe DiMaggio: 10.8
Mike Schmidt: 10.6
Jimmie Foxx: 10.5
Dan Brouthers: 10.4
Eddie Collins: 10
Stan Musial: 9.9
Hank Aaron: 9.8
Nap Lajoie: 9.8
Roger Connor: 9.8
Mel Ott: 9.7
...
Royce Clayton: 2.2
Melky Cabrera: 1.9
Charlie Grimm: 1.9
Bill Buckner: 1.9
Joe Carter: 1.9
Larry Bowa: 1.8
Ruben Sierra: 1.6
Doc Cramer: 1
Don Kessinger: 0.9
Kid Gleason: 0.9

Ovechkin might not even be the best Russian ever. Larionov, Fetisov and those guys were robbed NHL careers.

Yes Ovi scored alot of goals but so did Brett Hull.

Also, I wish Pavel Bure had knees. The fact that he had two 60 goal seasons and two more seasons of 59 and 58 goals is insanity, the latter two happening in the dead puck early 2000s.

In 2000-2001 Pavel Bure scored 58 goals and 92 points to lead the Panthers in scoring. In second place with the Panther was Victor Kozlov with 14 goals and 37 points. Just a crazy gap between the leading scoring and the next guy. A 44 goal gap between your top guy and the next best is unheard of.

Also, I hope Ovechkin (loves Putin) is super pumped he had to break a record held by Gretzky (loves Trump) on a shithole like Long Island (loves Trump and, by extension, Putin). Will only make it that much sweeter when Kreider passes them both in 2048.

Buckner is definitely someone who WAR hates. High average but low walks and not a lot of power while playing first.

He was a hot commodity because no one knew or cared about OBP back then.

Anyway, go Hockey Club!

Classy Sharks crew all the way.

Listening to Flames radio this morning, they mentioned that Drew Remenda reached out to Sportnet during the intermission to make sure they were being fair, which i thought they were, pumped up Wolf quite a bit!

Sharks broadcast did an amazing job and kept mentioning how important this game is to the Flames. They were even excited when the Flames scored!

Now go beat Minnesota tomorrow and Edmonton on Friday!
