Well that was a fun path… Brits are really angry that Americans don’t know who Robbie Williams is. I’ve know the name for a long time, mainly because he performs at soccer events. I vaguely remember him having a hit song in the US, but listening to a few minutes of his biggest songs, nothing sounds familiar. Whenever I hear about him, I always assumed he was more of a joke, but apparently he’s been Taylor Swift throughout most of the world for 30 years.A_B wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2025 12:42 pmrass wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 5:57 pmVery positive review!

Yeah, I've known the name for a long time, but like you have never sought it out and couldn't likely pick it out if it came on.
It reminds me of Russell Peters, an international star in stand-up comedy who most Americans hadn't heard of until he did a Netflix or HBO set 5 or 6 years ago. I suspect he's still relatively unknown in America, special or not.

Peters shows up in my Sirius Comedy apps pretty regular. Enough that I know who he is, but yeah, Im in a specific lane there.

Peters 15 years ago is probably a better comp. He's gotten around to the US plenty at this point.
I remember him being on a podcast way back in the day. The entire point of the interview was that the guy was (is) massively successful, and no one in the States had heard of him.

Re: Movies
Safe here. I’ve heard him on several comedians’ podcasts, and they all consider him one of, if not the biggest act in the world. Seems like a really nice guy, but what I’ve heard of his standup seems very bland.Nonlinear FC wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2025 2:57 pm Peters 15 years ago is probably a better comp. (Violently resisting the use of a certain slang term.)
Yeah, that's my exposure to him, as well. (whew.) I think thing about his comedy is that he does world tours and to keep his sets relatable and translatable, he might take a more down-the-middle approach. Maybe?
Jo Koy does some incredible stuff about various Asian cultures (similarities between Mexicans and Filipinos almost gave me a heart attack), but a lot of the white folks probably didn't understand a bunch of that.
I've seen Andrew Schulz be edgy in front of people of just about any ethnicity. The dude does his homework and goes in hard, no matter what country he's in.

Looking at his filmography (and I obviously get many might disagree) but his last decent movie looks like The Other Guys (2010).

For some reason, over the last few days I've watched the Gerry Butler/50 Cent vehicle "Den Of Thieves". Pretty silly standard bank robbery movie, but good for what it is.
But I wish someone could explain to me the heist plan.

I've actually watched a more recent Wahlberg movie than y'all! 2018's Instant Family. A nice, feel good family comedy. Nothing great, but a good one to watch with my wife and kids when they were younger.

Uncharted was decent. Mile 22 was also decent. And I admit I enjoyed both Ted and Ted 2. Wahlberg's had a pretty amazing career for someone who isn't that great of an actor, isn't that handsome, and isn't that charismatic. He scores above average on all, but doesn't really excel at anything other than playing a Boston guy.

Rather than watch the ongoing Horror Show this morning, I watched "Twisters" instead. Perfectly cromulent movie. Glen Powell has got charisma oozing out of him. Completely predictable though.
And Daisy Edgar-Jones looks like she is 15.

You guys may not give a shit about this sort of thing, but sometimes it’s fun to attend film festivals, especially on opening night.
This past couple days, my wife and I attended the first four films of the annual San Francisco/Oakland “Noir City” Film Noir film festival, featuring introductions and comments by Turner Classic Movies hosts Eddie Muller and Alicia Malone.
Saw two excellent classic films, The Narrow Margin and Kiss of Death (featuring one of films’ most evil bad guys, Tommy Udo, played by Richard Widmark in his film debut). And, two entertaining but silly noirs, Hell’s Half Acre and The Sleeping City.

A Real Pain on Hulu (Eisenberg, Culkin) was fine. The rare occasion where I think 15 minutes more might have added a lot to the movie.

Re: Movies
Yeah, I wanted to like it more, but it did have its moments. Culkin is fantastic playing a self absorbed man-child. Jennifer Gray looks better at 61 than she did in Dirty Dancing. But there was one scene that really hit me on a personal level. In trying to make Culkin's character seem as pathetic as possible, they throw in that he lives in Binghamton (my hometown). At a deep point in the movie they had a discussion that rang true for me, but pulled me out of the story, when Culkin complains that Eisenberg never visits him, and he said, "why would I? You live in Binghamton, I live in NYC." That's a conversation I've had with friends still living in Binghamton.A_B wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 8:22 am A Real Pain on Hulu (Eisenberg, Culkin) was fine. For a weekend night movie to watch at home, I thought it was a very good movie.
I listened to an interview with Culkin (Conan) and his interaction with Eisenberg, who directed the movie, made me enjoy the movie that much more. Two very different methods of acting/directing... Though Culkin said he never wants to direct, he sure has a specific way of moving through his scenes.
