And there's even more to the story:
Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Just found out I have it through pool testing. Had a bad runny nose 10 days ago and thought it was allergies, dry air, or running in the cold, so I worked on Tuesday and Wednesday feeling not great, but good enough to work. Then Wednesday night I felt real sick --nose would not stop running, annoying cough, and tired. Missed Thursday (the Thursday last week when I would have been pool tested) and Friday and didn't leave the apartment all weekend. Felt much better on Monday -- worked, ran again, and had a normal week of work until I got my positive result this afternoon. I'm assuming my cold was Covid last week and it's still in my system. Now I'm just going to be a paranoid for the next few days everytime a cough that something new is coming.

Anti-Vax Cop Who Told Guv to ‘Kiss My Ass’ Dies After Battle With COVID
A former Washington State trooper who was fired for refusing to get the COVID vaccine—and then went viral in a video in which he told the governor to “kiss my ass”—has died after being infected with the coronavirus, a source confirmed to The Daily Beast.
Robert LaMay became a hero to anti-vaxxers in October when he defied the state mandate and became one of dozens of troopers to lose their job over it.
From his cruiser, LaMay, 50, filmed his final signoff, saying, “This will be the last time you hear me in a state patrol car. And Jay Inslee can kiss my ass.”

Woman charged with threatening Bellevue gas station employee with gun after she refused to wear mask
Woman charged with threatening Bellevue gas station employee with gun after she refused to wear mask
She called the cops herself! And took the video!King County prosecutors say a 33-year-old Spanaway, Pierce County, woman pointed a gun at a gas station employee in Bellevue on Thursday after refusing to wear a mask inside the business.
Just before 11 p.m. Thursday, Nommensen called 911 and told a dispatcher that a gas station employee had pushed her out of the store and wouldn’t print out a receipt because she refused to wear a mask inside the business, charging papers say. She said she needed the receipt in order to be reimbursed for her gas purchase by her employer, according to the charges.
Bellevue police officers responded to an AM/PM convenience store and Arco gas station in the 13900 block of Northeast 20th Street, where they interviewed Nommensen and the employee and viewed two videos Nommensen shot on her cellphone as well as footage from the store’s security cameras, the charges say.
The employee told officers Nommensen refused to put on a mask and refused to leave the store so he eventually grabbed her shoulder and physically escorted her out. After walking back into the store, the employee turned and saw Nommensen draw a firearm and point it at him through the store’s glass door, according to the charges.
Nommensen, who showed officers her driver’s license and concealed pistol license, claimed she couldn’t wear a mask due to some unnamed medical condition and that the employee had attacked her and grabbed her neck while pushing her from the store, the charges say. Police say Nommensen told them she was scared of the clerk because he is a man and is physically bigger than she is, according to the charges.
The store’s video footage showed the two arguing before the employee grabbed Nommensen’s jacket and pulled her to the door; he let go as soon as she was outside and she appeared to hit him several times with her right hand, say the charges. After the employee was back inside the store, the footage captured Nommensen drawing her gun and pointing it at him.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Overall the death rates in red and blue counties are pretty even. (My son did a research project on this for his GIS course.)
But since vaccines became available, the death rates in red counties are way higher than in blue.
Charles Gaba (https://twitter.com/charles_gaba) reports on this regularly.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Very rough analysis using Georgia's COVID website:
White, non-hispanic people make up 36% of all confirmed cases and 59% of all confirmed deaths. They are about 50% of the population.
Now one of the reasons for the lower case number is that a lot of confirmed cases do not specify race (something that doesn't happen when counting dead people). But it's not the only reason. The numbers for Black non-hispanic, the second biggest group, are 26% of confirmed cases and 33% of deaths. For a group that is 33% of the population, that makes sense.
And I think it's pretty clear that the white people who are dying are not the metro Atlanta liberals.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
This is going to sound like a joke or maybe worse but I swear it's not...
I assume there are numerous parts of Georgia (and plenty of other states) where you're statistically far less likely to reach the age where COVID can just simply kill you unless you're white.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
That's a good point - but wouldn't a corollary be that a nonwhite person is more susceptible to Covid at a particular age than a white person would be? So a 65yo Black person would be about as susceptible to Covid as a 75yo white person?

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Well, I popped positive.
Before we left, we had a doctor come to our room Monday morning at 8 pm local. He swabbed us, but didn’t really go as high up there as I usually do. At 6 pm local, we got our results. Negative. So we can fly back to EWR on the 15th. We land around noon Newark time, head home, and just sleep.
Wednesday we both took off (or to be more accurate, she took off, and I wasn’t on a new project yet after telling the agency before that they can kick rocks). I go to see my little guys for my Wednesday visit. All good, no issues.
Thursday 2/17 I wake up and have a little tickle in my throat. We both have about a half-dozen rapid tests, and lo and behold, the first one is a positive. She’s negative, we both try two other brands, all negative, but then one of the two turns positive late, a real faint line. I schedule a test at a CVS for today at one.
I’m scheduled to have my weekend with my kids this weekend, but I’m in no real position to, so I text their mom to say I popped positive. She has no real concern, they’re both vaxxed, my daughter boosted. But I’m a little worried. My son, like me, has bad asthma. When I call them Thursday night, they both aren’t very worried.
I go to bed around 7, wake up at 2 to hit my asthma inhaler, go back, sleep until around 8 with a humidifier running. I text their mom and say I’m in no position. I can still taste and smell, but my asthma feels like there’s a bowling ball on my chest, I got slight fever, and I feel like I got hit by a truck. Her response is that I’ll have to make up the two weekends I bumped around due to my trip. And if you also say that she never wished me to feel better, come and collect your prize.
And if that’s not enough, my mom called me yesterday to tell me that my oldest cousin, a spry 72-year old, whose he, his wife, and son are all well-renowned lawyers in Center City Philly, died of a atrial issue the day we flew out, and the service was this past Monday. That hit me like a sledgehammer. Fuck, man.

Not quite sure where to put this...
My best bud/soccer coach guy just got through a REALLY bad kidney infection. We are all wondering if this is some long-haul COVID stuff. He had a 104 fever and was totally knocked out of commission for about a week.
It came right when we all found out his wife (my wife's BFF) has contracted pretty aggressive breast cancer. She started chemo last week. She didn't get a mammogram for about 2.5 years, and things got more advanced than they should've. They are confident she'll pull through, but it's going to be a tough go for the foreseeable future.
On top of that, ANOTHER of the inner circle moms/friends also contracted breast cancer, almost on the same exact timeline as the other friend. She initially got a "stage 0, nothing to see here" but they called her back in and re-assessed and... Nope, this thing is aggressive and growing and you need surgery right away.
Everyone is rallying around the two, which is nice to see. But, holy fuckballs, this shit seemed to come out of nowhere and it's a major mindscrew. My buddy's wife is really the life of the party/glue that holds a lot of us together. Gonna be tough seeing her go through this.

So, fellas with wives moving into their 50s... Get them to schedule that mammogram. One of the most curable forms of cancer.. as long as you get to it early.
(My wife goes in for hers on TH... but she's been going in regularly for many years.)
