Just got an email from the school nurse saying "one of your children" was in close contact with a symptomatic positive COVID case. Asymptomatic close contacts must attend school but monitor for symptoms. The weird part, "if you have more than one child in this school, watch all of them for possible symptoms." I can understand not telling me which student was positive, but why wouldn't they tell me which one of my kids was in contact? I mean, it's a form email, but you'd think they could populate the name.

I don't know if I'm just burned out from COVID crap, but these emails just don't hit the way they used to. Sure, we are all boosted, but I know we still need to take this serious.

Just found out my daughter's boyfriend and her roommate (two different people) tested positive. Woo fuckin hoo. (Weirdly, her rapid test came back negative despite these positives from the two people she spends most time with). She is resigned that a positive result soon is inevitable.

So my brother-in-law's been battling esophageal cancer since last June. He was admitted today because he had been losing weight and struggling to eat and the fluids kept retaining despite the repeated draining.

Cat-scans show it's spread all over. They're going to go in for yet another round of chemo once his body is strong enough to withstand it.

I don't really talk much about this stuff because I tend to feel awkward about offering and receiving supportive tones from people I've never met. But holy fucking hell: seeing my wife fall to pieces like that fucking sucks.

And let me know when it's OK for me to joke that this sounds like a line from the trailer for a mid-aughts romcom or maybe a current day Hallmark movie (it would be a dude saying it in the former and an attractive young lady in the latter)...

I’ll hit 5 months before we depart, but she won’t.
We're running into this problem now (minus the overseas trip). We'd like to go out for Easter with my mom (who has just finished chemo and is raring to go), but I don't think my wife will feel comfortable doing that until she (my wife) gets her second booster. And she won't hit the five-month mark until just a few days before Easter.

My issue got solved pretty quickly. It just took a few days after the CDC came out for the second booster for all the locations around here to get on board. Scheduled to get my second booster later today at CVS.

Kids spring break starts next week and some asshole who lives in the house with them just tested positive. Any suggestions on (1) how to avoid family in a 1,500 sq ft house and (2) what to do to kill time that isn't already in the netflix thread? Also, what's the rule about walking around outside as a known positive? Avoid it or mask up?

Good lord, wouldn't it be impossible to avoid family?

It'd be great to send them to the grandparents but wouldn't you need an interim quarantine period to make sure they aren't positive also?

Walking outside is fine if you aren't standing around in a big crowd. (Like, don't go to a ballgame or something.)

If you're healthy sounds like as good a time as any for everyone to breathe it in. Hotbox it to Florida. They won't care. Bring some aspirin and enjoy the beach. With some luck the adults will alternate days in bed if anything. One or two will probably escape it entirely.

The GF's daughter and her BF went to Italy last week to do a ski-touring/photo-op trip in the Dolomites. Then they went to Oslo for the Ski-Joring World Championships for his job (he works for Ruff Wear).

And, of course, they've now both tested positive, and they need negative tests to get back into the US (both are double vaxxed/boosted). So they've had to get an AirBnB in Oslo as they wait things out.

Oh...and they got engaged while in the Dolomites!

Youngest is now the only negative and given that she spent something like 10 of the last 11 nights in the same bed as either me or her sister, she’s almost assuredly an asymptomatic false negative or was asymptomatic positive sometime in the post-mask era. Nobody tell me if the prior “you should be good for 90 days now” logic no longer applies because we’re banking on this meaning we’re safe through the end of school.

It’s in our house for the first time. Both kids have been wearing their masks during the school day, but at the oldest’s school at least she’s in the minority. Came home from track practice with a scratchy throat and double-lined a home test.

So long Easter? Not sure about the colonoscopy?
