The Leafs are supposed to lose games like that. Inconceivable that they won two in Tampa with late heroics.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Mon Apr 24, 2023 10:26 pm Well that was a bag over the head punch in the face.

Re: NHL 2022-23
That Leafs comeback was ... absolutely something else. I swear I heard Toronto screaming from across the lake.
also [crosspost to rants2] on an somewhat-related note, I loathe Paul Bissonnette. Biz. Whateverfk he wants to go by. Yay he's going for the young/hip/obnoxious demographic - he's exactly everything I can't stand about modern sports "talk" - intermission has gotten to me immediately leaving the room or [if i have control of the remote] a click away.
(n.b. i'm maybe the only Sabres fan i know actually rooting for the Leafs; old habits diehard. Darryl/Popcorn/Lanny/Wendel and all that - Go Leafs Go.)
also I have to think a full-powered Winnipeg team would have their series flipped at 3-1. W/o Ehlers, Morrissey, and now Scheif... goodnight. :/ Hard not to think the Jets should have had more playoff runs in the past 5 years and things seem to be stuck.

Re: NHL 2022-23
Yup, there's been a ton of talent on Winnipeg for a while and its gotten nowhere. Same rosters and same results but in a market anyone gave half a shit about and it would be a deal, I'd think?
Re: NHL 2022-23
Losing Morrissey was the big one. He was a god this season (and star of my fantasy team), but he got hurt a month ago and hasn’t been the same, since.

Re: NHL 2022-23
Yeah this year, I would say they were about even with Vegas coming into the playoffs - with Ehlers, Scheiffele and Morrissey I think they were the better team.
Assuming they do go out in round one, bit of a tough situation here. Coming into this year after the shitty season last year, pretty much everyone assumed they would blow it all up after this season. Then they went out and over-performed expectations for 50 games, slumped for 25 (though underlying numbers were better than results), then got hot to finish the year and looked a bit scary until the decimation.
If I were GM I would be tempted to run it back one more year, even though that would be wildly unpopular. Ehlers, Connor, Morrissey signed for several more seasons. Scheifele and Hellebuyck will be pending UFA, and Dubois can be retained for a year as an RFA. Have to assume all three are gone after next season no matter what. To me, if you're going to totally rebuild, wait one more season (and if next year goes really bad, imagine what you could get for those 3 at the deadline). Anyway, I'm sure I'm solidly in the minority on running it back one more year, but that's the kinda fan I am.
Jets had such good vibes in the 17/18 season going to WCF and seeming so young and stacked. It simply can't be understated how huge a loss it was to have Dustin Buyfuglien retire out of the blue. Enstrom got old, Trouba left, and that pretty much sealed this team's fate for the last 4 years. Also, of all the talk of weird leadership stuff going on in the room, it's pretty clear unfortunately that Paul Maurice just didn't (doesn't) have the systems and strategies to win in today's NHL (which is too bad, since I really like him as a coach). I mean if Rick Bowness of all people can get that dramatic of a turnaround...

Re: NHL 2022-23
I don’t want to diss Winnipeg because it’s a good team but Vegas had 15 more points in the regular season AND finally got its best player back after being out for 40 games so not sure I’m getting how the Jets are being hailed as the better team even if they were completely healthy.

I think the #1 thing was that the pundits didn’t trust Brossoit. But he’s been solid.brian wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 1:52 pm I don’t want to diss Winnipeg because it’s a good team but Vegas had 15 more points in the regular season AND finally got its best player back after being out for 40 games so not sure I’m getting how the Jets are being hailed as the better team even if they were completely healthy.

He’s gonna be a question mark the entire playoffs but it’s not like Vegas had a #1 goalie all season.sancarlos wrote: ↑Tue Apr 25, 2023 2:19 pmI think the #1 thing was that the pundits didn’t trust Brossoit. Re: NHL 2022-23
To be a little tiny bit fair to Maurice, he was walking into a roster that made a win-later move. That plus Bobrovsky isn't 30 points, but its some.

Flames have a new arena deal. And they're only paying for 30% of it.

You can’t stop former Sharks’ star*, Mikey Eyssimont. You can only hope to contain him.

Re: NHL 2022-23
Canadian hockey media (corporate and social) is practically un-consumable while the Leafs are in the playoffs. I don't mean the attention they get, that's justified, I'm talking about the insane obsession with reffing permeating through all levels of coverage.
Like, for any other team/game/series, there are always countless plays where you could argue for a missed call here, or a bad call there, but 30/32* other markets will bitch about it a bit and move on. The level of obsession about any interaction a Leafs player has on the ice is not only insane, but insufferable. I honestly think the level of reffing this playoffs is about on par with what it's always been, and the oversized influence that the Toronto-based (social) media has in this league is ruining the experience for everyone else forced to live through their freak-out.
And I can't even mute "Leafs" on twitter because I need the schadenfruende of how much panic is about to set in over then next 48 hours.
*the other market is, of course, Vancouver.

If only one series goes to a Game 7 I hope it's Devils-Rangers. Games that I've seen seem noticeably faster than the other series. The history and rivalry. Great jersey match-up. Probably the series I've enjoyed most outside my own rooting interest.
Re: NHL 2022-23
If exceptionally annoyed at how predictable the series is turning and yet this will be nothing compared to my flipout when we hire Quenneville.

Phil Kessel is a healthy scratch for the first time in 14 years tonight (totally approve of the decision. He’s been garbage.

Bowness was PISSED after the game.

My less than scientific sampling of Torontonians in the park while walking the dog and on the golf course, pro shop etc would indicate that this city is on the verge of mental collapse.
Up 3-2 in the series, sure. But this franchise has been punishing what are definitely among the most loyal fans in world sports for almost 3 generations.
There is no other sport where the richest team hasn't won a thing in close to 60 years. Imagine if the Yankees hadn't won a World Series since Mantle still played. Or the Lakers not even making the finals since two years before Jabbar even entered the league.

From 1942 to 1966 the Rangers only made the playoffs 8 times, in a 6 team league!

It’s not that they haven’t technically been penalties, but if a real Devils fan existed and they said the league might want a G7, I wouldn’t offer a ton of resistance.

Are the Leafs just going to blow this series in their typical Shakespearian manner?
