I'm totally down with this, although with my control issues it might look like Fiddy's first pitch at that Mets game.

So, looks like there's an emerging consensus to use L-Jam as the designated driller. Only question is, are we OK with him giving up 8 runs before he gets to the pitcher? [/burn]

Seriously as an aside, I'm not sure what's going on with L-Jam this season. All his scouting reports and under-the-hood ratings indicate he should be at least a decent set-up man. I guess he's just been going through an inordinately bad stretch for 11 weeks.

Looks like we're still deadlocked between hitting Soto just once or multiple times.

Also a reminder from the earlier notes that J-Lo is on Woonsocket if we want to hit him too just because.

Is there an option for proselytizing specific players as well? Maybe have a player corner him in the clubhouse and spread the Good Word?

Hey, in case anyone's still up...I'm playing the Woonsocket game right now and Danny Soto is finally up...but the bases are loaded with one out. We still want to hit him?

Oh shit, this worked out way better than I could have hoped:

- L-Jam hits Soto and Jerloma twice each.
- We unfortunately fall behind 3-1 in the process.
- Bengal is subbed in for L-Jam in the 5th and hits Jerloma and Soto again.
- Soto finally charges the mound to fight Bengal, instigating a bench-clearing brawl. They are both ejected.
- We come from behind to tie the game at 3 to send it to extra innings, but fall behind 4-3 in the 10th.
- P.D.X. hits a walk-off 2-run HR in the bottom of the 10th!

Here is in-game footage of the incident:

Bengal and Soto are suspended for 9 games.

WEEK 12 UPDATE

Image
Victory Pushes Sports Frogs Record to 44-29
The Burlington Sports Frogs picked up a win at Green Mountain Grounds, knocking off the Fort Myers Manatees, 6-2. On the mound for Burlington was right-hander Brian, who played a pivotal role in the win. The Sports Frogs bumped their record to 44-29 with this latest triumph.

BSF21 aided the Burlington cause with a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the center fielder was 2-4 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

Brian told a Burlington Observer reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.

Manatees Turn Back Burlington, 4-3
Fort Myers right-hander Israel Gonzales pitched his team to victory over the Burlington Sports Frogs at Green Mountain Grounds. The final score was 4-3. Mike Stengel converted his 4th save in 6 tries. Fort Myers, at 26-46, sits in last place in the Shrew Conference Southern Division.

Gonzales provided the big break for the Manatees in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run, helping Fort Myers to get the win.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Gonzales said.

Image
Multi-HR Day for Gonzales as Manatees Overpower Sports Frogs, 10-8
The Fort Myers Manatees topped the Burlington Sports Frogs by the score of 10-8, with the biggest share of the credit going to shortstop Ernesto Gonzales. Gonzales was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for the Manatees on the day. Mike Stengel was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 5 of 7 save opportunities. The Manatees, at 27-46, sit in last place in the Shrew Conference Southern Division.

Gonzales had a key at-bat for Fort Myers early in the game. With a runner on 1st, he hit a 2-run home run. It was his 25th home run of the season and gave Fort Myers an early 2-0 lead.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Gonzales told a Fort Myers Citizen reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."

Image
Sports Frogs Roll Over Sealfisters, 11-4
Burlington starter Sabo had a strong outing against the Woonsocket Sealfisters at Green Mountain Grounds. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 11-4 win. Sabo went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. His record improves to 10-4. Burlington leads the Bensell Conference Northeast Division by 4½ games.

The fans who came in support of the Sports Frogs were pleased with the outcome. It was what they had hoped for when they passed through the turnstiles at Green Mountain Grounds.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Sabo said after the game.

P.D.X. had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the tenth. On a 2-0 sinker from Jose Calzada, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Sports Frogs a 5-4 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for P.D.X..

"This is a very good team," said P.D.X.. "We have the chance to do something special."

P.D.X. 3-4, Sports Frogs Move to 47-31

P.D.X. went 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 for the Sports Frogs on the day. Burlington improves to 47-31 with the win. They lead their division by 5½ games.

wlu_lax had a big 2-run single for the Sports Frogs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Burlington leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Ken Moss and stroked the single to left. It was his 91st hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Sports Frogs ahead, 3-0.

P.D.X. called the win "a collective effort."

NEWS AND NOTES:

- bengal has been suspended for 9 games in the aftermath of the brawl with Woonsocket. Under the terms of the suspension, he still keeps his roster spot, so we'll have to play a man down for the duration. At least it was worth it. (Right?)

- Woonsocket's Danny Soto, meanwhile, was not suspended for the incident at all. Bullshit! How dare he get away with defending himself!

- Degen missed his turn in the rotation due to our unique approach to handling the Soto game. Hopefully this won't throw off his rhythm.

- bronto lasted a whole week and a half into his comeback before getting injured again, this time with a fractured foot that will put him on the DL for 3 weeks. I think I'll bring Gunpowder back up to take his spot for now, but might swap a few guys back and forth over the next few weeks to give them a shot.

- Mister D has been hitting .340 since his notoriously bad first month of the season. Also, I took a closer look at the ratings and Mister D's "Intelligence" score on a scale of 1-200 is 15.

- The game says I have a "Poor" reputation as a manager despite leading the division in my first season with no prior experience. Fuck you, game!

Our dramatic sweep of the Fisters capped a 4-2 week. We didn't expand our division lead, though, due to a surge from Utica, who may be emerging as a real rival.

Image

We start off the upcoming week with an inter-conference series against the Chattanooga Crackers, a strong team led by the Swamp's own Rex. Following that, we'll have another series at Woonsocket, with more chances to get back at Soto (and Jerloma).

6/27 @ CHA - DSafe
6/28 @ CHA - TT
6/29 @ CHA - Sabo
6/30 @ WOO - Degen
7/1 @ WOO - Brian
7/2 @ WOO - DSafe

Stay tuned...

So, I'll honor Degen and DSafe's wishes and have them do some plunking. It took I think six hit batters in the Soto game to finally trigger the brawl, so the game is pretty lenient, but I'll need to keep it reasonable enough that we don't end up with like 4 pitchers available by the end of the week.

WEEK 13 UPDATE

Image
Crackers Stymie Burlington, Take 4-1 Win
Chattanooga turned a good effort from starter Luis Ramos into a win over the Burlington Sports Frogs at Alamos Stadium. The final score was 4-1. Ramos, now 5-3, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 6, walking 5, and allowing 1 earned run. Rick Hart notched his 22nd save in 25 chances.

Had Alex Ornes not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases empty, Ornes hit a solo home run. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Crackers.

Ramos attributed the win to "energy and focus on the part of everyone."

The Crackers bumped their record to 43-34 with this latest triumph.

Image
Sports Frogs Win at Chattanooga, 5-4
Burlington catcher A_B was a significant contributor in his team's 5-4 triumph over the Chattanooga Crackers. He was 2-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for Burlington. Burlington leads the Bensell Conference Northeast Division by 4½ games.

The Sports Frogs used some clutch hitting to beat the Crackers, a good example being the at-bat of EnochRoot in the top of the fifth. With two down, EnochRoot gave his team the lead, 5-4, when he hit a run-scoring single.

"Enjoyed this one," A_B told the Burlington Observer. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Image
Our June 29 game at Chattanooga was canceled due to weather and re-scheduled for later in the season.

Image
Sports Frogs Roll Sealfisters, 12-1
Burlington Sports Frogs starter Sabo was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Woonsocket Sealfisters, 12-1. Sabo went 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 0, and struck out 3. His record improves to 11-4. Burlington is now 49-32, 3½ games up in the Bensell Conference Northeast Division.

The Sports Frogs picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching.

"I thought we played a nice game," Sabo told the Burlington Observer. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."

Image
Sports Frogs Need Extras to Top Sealfisters
Burlington starter Degenerasian pitched effectively against the Woonsocket Sealfisters at Lizard Kings Ballpark. The left-hander led his team to a 5-3 win. Reliever Johnnie picked up the win. His record improves to 4-3. Jose Calzada took the loss. Burlington leads the Bensell Conference Northeast Division by 4 games.

The most critical at-bat came in the top of the tenth inning. With no one out, A_B hit a 1-2 slider from Jose Calzada for a run-scoring single. It put Burlington in front, 4-3.

"Enjoyed this one," A_B told the Burlington Observer. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Image
Sealfisters Jolt Sports Frogs with Late Rally
The Sealfisters grabbed a win, 5-3, at Lizard Kings Ballpark, overcoming a fine effort from Burlington pitcher Brian. Brian went 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Woonsocket reliever Carl Kiracofe got the win, raising his record to 4-3. Shirley was tagged with the loss. The Sealfisters now have a record of 39-42.

The Sealfisters were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when right fielder Luis Cantu turned a first pitch fastball from Shirley into a 3-run home run. The walk-off home run sent a roar through the crowd and gave Woonsocket a thrilling 5-3 win.

"Big team win," Cantu said later.
