He'd have to ask Steinbrenner to go past the cap. Hence the dumpster diving on Taillon and Kluber.

Really glad there's a foot of snow coming so shutting down the city to mourn Pedroia's retirement won't be so glaringly lame.

Just like how everyone in LA in the late 80s says they were at the Gibson game, everyone in Boston in the 00s claim they were there that time Pedroia was the guest bahhtendah and was totally hammahhd.
Re: 2020 MLB Season, Sponsored by Sprint
It's a bummer Bonds won't be on the HoF ballot at the same time as Pedroia because I want to just dunk nonstop on any baseball writer who tries to make that case.

Pedroia had a really great career which shouldn't get him even close to the Hall of Fame. His top comps from age 26-33 were Jose Vidro -> Michael Young.
Re: 2020 MLB Season, Sponsored by Sprint
You can thank Manny Machado for derailing any chance Pedroia had at the HOF.mister d wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 1:55 pm Pedroia had a really great career which shouldn't get him even close to the Hall of Fame. His top comps from age 26-33 were Jose Vidro -> Michael Young.
And while we’re at it, one of his comps on his bb-ref page is Travis Jackson. What the hell is he doing in the HOF?

As Rex said ...
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Yes. Sure. But also, the cards are literally paying him nothing for 2021.

They’ll probably get small market compensation picks out of it too. They’ve always been able to pick up stars for peanuts. Don’t know how. Cardinals Devil Magic? Surveillance tapes of other teams’ owners?tennbengal wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 1:12 amYes. Sure. But also, the cards are literally paying him nothing for 2021.

Re: 2020 MLB Season, Sponsored by Sprint
I’ve yet to hear any explanation of how the Rockies could benefit from this deal, other than the Stanton analogy. But if you’re paying that much money then what relief are you getting from that contract?
Re: 2020 MLB Season, Sponsored by Sprint
The gamble is that he doesn't opt out and they save $100MM which is a pretty good bet to make if "a winning baseball team" isn't a consideration.

Re: 2020 MLB Season, Sponsored by Sprint
I’m curious as to the Dodgers’ motivation. They didn’t get demonstrably better, not at the cost of $85m over the next two seasons, anyway.
This was to keep him from going to SD? Maybe afraid to face the Mets in the PS?

Re: 2020 MLB Season, Sponsored by Sprint
Couldn't find a MLB 2021 thread yet, so I'll put this here. Seems like one of the Mariner's owners gave a speech at a Rotary Club luncheon and got a little loose...
It took Mariners CEO Kevin Mather just 45 minutes to alienate everybody connected to baseball in Seattle
(not to mention this guy got #meToo'd a couple of years ago)
It took Mariners CEO Kevin Mather just 45 minutes to alienate everybody connected to baseball in Seattle
At least they have years of success....right?Earlier in the month, Mather spoke to the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club via a video call. Perhaps thinking Rotarians wouldn’t record him and post the chat online, he spoke with the candor of a barfly at last call.
Among Mather’s utterances …
The Mariners had a “terrible year financially” but still “did better than most of the other professional sports teams” because of their lucrative TV deal, which allowed them to “punch well above our weight.”
The team passed on calling up prospects Jarred Kelenic and Logan Gilbert last year due to service-time constraints.
Kelenic turned down a six-year deal so as to “bet on himself” and maximize his earning potential when he hits free agency.
Teammates urged first baseman Evan White to decline the Mariners’ $23 million contract offer — a deal that could potentially net him $55 million — but he accepted it in order to set he and his family up for life.
Longtime M’s third baseman Kyle Seager will enter the Mariners’ Hall of Fame one day but is also “overpaid.”
Having to pay former Mariners pitcher and current scout Hisashi Iwakuma’s translator $75,000 was a nuisance, and that once Mather told Iwakuma that, “his English got better.”
20-year-old prospect Julio Rodriguez, who’s Dominican, doesn’t speak “tremendous” English
