his character is turning into one of the most awful, uncomfortable even to watch characters I've seen. There have been so many evil characters in movies and tv, but this one just seems worst than the rest -- maybe it's his acting or maybe it's a little too much realism knowing there are people like him

Anyone catch the first episode of "True Detective" (with Jodie Foster) last night?
Seems like it could be good...but the "police work" stuff is remarkably cliched. Lots of lines that you'd hear in any other police procedural, included a "You're off the case!"

I did. I agree with spoiler. But the whole thing for True Detective is freaky occult type detective story. And I forgive most anything that John Hawkes is in.

I was too distracted by the check piercings, gauges holes, and bad tattoos.
The lady who plays that character is a professional boxer (18-7-1 with 5 KOs). She identifies as native (unrecognized tribe) and from what I have wiki'd the character and her real life interests overlap.

Watching the Emmys and damn it was a rough year for celebrity deaths.

I've been watching Barry over the past few weeks. Great show. I love that the episodes are about 30 minutes too. S3 Barry (the character) got a little dark. I'm mid S4 now and this season's just weird.
Finished it the other night. Great ending. Very clever writing in Barry. I never correctly guessed which way things were going to go, but they always made it make sense.
You can definitely pop into the 2005 Eccelston series and be ok. I had some general background knowledge from seeing some of the Baker Who as a kid and was fine. That still gives you a ton to watch. I only kept up through the end of Matt Smith’s run.
Going back to the real beginning seems like a lot of work.
Hopefully your uncle jlo sees this and weighs in.

Yeah, I don't think it matters, but I started in on the Baker era when I was a kid and I was fine.

I say you gotta go strict completist with this show.

They uncovered a few scrolls of the Talmud that references a Doctor Who in Aramaic.
If you're going to go completist, you need to start there.

I decided to finally watch True Detective, so I've watched the first couple of episodes of S1. Woody and (especially) McConaughey are great. But also, man, I was not totally aware of Alexandra Daddario's game. Holy shit.

She had been in a lot of stuff, but mostly 3rd actress or lower. That was her breakout... She's absolutely stunning.

I knew her from the Percy Jackson movies. But she doesn't take her shirt off in those.

She hasn't been showing them off in her recent work, so Sydney Sweeney has filled that void.

She showed them off in S1 of "White Lotus"...
The scene where she's in bed with her husband, right? I never looked at the scene in the same way as True Detective.

Endorse 100%. The background of the Timelords is clearly explained rather quickly with Eccleston and the effects are so dated on any of those older episodes that it looks like a satire.

Cool cool. I happened to see there's a Doctor Who channel on Pluto TV and watched some of it. And you're right. Soooooo dated. Almost can't take the show seriously with how old it looked.

John Stewart returning to the Daily Show. I've pretty much tuned the show out at this point... Probably will just pick up YouTube highlights, but happy he's back.

I saw an advertisement for A history of the world in six glasses. Looks pretty good. Thought maybe I’d watch it. But then I saw it is streaming on Fox Nation. No way in hell I’m downloading that channel. Oh well.

i second the book! my late father-in-law got it for me a few years before he died and it took me a while to crack the spine but it's much more interesting than i'd initially given it credit for. good tribute to him on the shelf too

I finished S1. Worthy of all the hype. Great southern gothic noir. Oh, and I love that they picked The Handsome Family for the theme song. A coworker shared some CDs of them with me about 20 years ago and I loved them. I hadn't listened to them in a while, so I was thankful for the reminder.

This is great.
Weird vibe with this episode and that skit encapsulates it well. The connection with the audience was just off all night. I think there's something about her delivery that doesn't quite work for improv... Too much time getting her lines out or something.

It felt like they hadn't actually rehearsed that one and were reading it for the first time.

Even the monologue, especially when JT came out was weirdly flat... As was the Barry Gibbs Talk Show skit.
