I mean this as a slight to no one, but I love when relatively light-weight issues like this pop-up and I can't tell which side really has the narrower view.

I'd have to listen to some of the Straight songs to see if I recognize any of them via osmosis, but Syb's statements pretty much echo my own. And I grew up in a NASCAR town!

I might have known his name/heard of him when I was in high school and he was at the height of his popularity, but I doubt I had heard any of his songs and I lived in a fairly rural(-ish) area. Think it just matters most what your parents and friends listen to at that age. Outside of the south and the plains states, country music (at least prior to the late 80s) wasn't especially ubiquitous. I think that's different now though and has changed over the years.

I was at the Walmarts in Evanston, WY a couple weeks ago and thought it was kind of cute that they played country music in the parking lot.

I grew up in a rural area, but I didn't really get into country until late high school. So Strait and Brooks and Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson were my intro. I like a lot of the stuff but it's definitely not my favorite of the genre anymore. Can't stand most mainstream stuff, with the exceptions alsmot always being female artists these days.

It's not news to you guys but I grew up listening to Billy Joel and a LOT of Motown and beach boys because that's what types of music my mom had around. She was NOT into country. Then my sister got into Hair metal and I still dig so much of that stuff to this day. I guess I listened to a lot of the non-hardcore rap, too. Fresh Prince, LL Cool J, etc.

yeah

and the petty analogy works multiple ways - he's got the most no. 1 songs in country history and I think that he was recognizable enough to be known by those who hadn't heard any of those songs, just like you didn't have to see a richard petty win live to know he won a lot

of course, a lot of people didn't know who petty is anyway, so I can see how that works with strait -- though I figured the movies and the relative ubiquity of his songs would meant he was "there" even if people didn't realize it

What's funny is that even when I posted that yesterday, I would've struggled to name a G Strait song. I just know he's a giant in the industry.

I grew up in a hippy home in Ann Arbor in the 70s. What struck me about that Willie article is how he was pulling in both rednecks and hippies, so it makes sense that the records on the shelf in my house ranged from Willie and Waylon and John Prine to the Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and King Crimson.

When it got into the 80s, I was moving into heavy metal and hip hop/rap... Never really dipped back into country in a meaningful way. Looking at Strait's career, this was about the time he was coming up, so I completely missed him.

as wlu_lax alluded to, I would have figured you would have seen bits of/at least heard of Pure Country. I figured that was enough of a cult 1990s movie that it had a decent awareness profile even among non-country fans
I may have been aware of Pure Country at some point, but I looked it up, doesn't seem familiar, but it came out 29 years ago, so maybe I saw commercials for it or something? According to Wiki, it brought in $15 million at the box office. According to Boxofficemojo.com, it was #87 in box office receipts in 1992, and I remember almost every other movie on that list, so I'm thinking it wasn't all that big of a movie in my circles. I'm shocked at how many movies I saw that year! That was back in the days my father would rent and copy tons of movies on a double VHS player, so we had a library of VHS dubs and written list of movies. My friends would come over and we'd have about 50 movies to choose from at any given time.

I definitely knew the name George Strait and knew he was a Country singer, but that's where it ended.

I didn't actually know a person who listened to country until high school, and even then it was just a few artists (carryover from him living in Florida for a while). If you asked me to name a country singer in 8th grade, I'd only know the pop-crossovers like Kenny and Dolly and Garth Brooks.

Did MTV have any country shows?
Good call on Kenny and Dolly, they definitely crossed into my knowledge. Dolly had/has huge tits, so she was referenced in jokes and I feel like Letterman interviewed her a lot, and Kenny Rogers had a bunch of songs I'd heard. Pretty sure my father had a Kenny cassette or two. It seems like Country was more in the mainstream culture in the 70s and very early 80s but somehow fell off, I wonder if that's just me or a cultural thing. Brooks and Dunn is a name I know, and I know they were the biggest group at some stretch (90's?), but I have no idea what they look like and can't name a single song of there's.

ETA: Looked up Brooks and Dunn, and I really hate the songs that came up. Strait has a great voice, not my bag, but I get it. B&D I viscerally dislike.

I saw that sign and knew that had to be within a few miles of the UT border. Subtlety and presentation are meaningless when you're the closest place for most people to easily get much cheaper liquor. If you were the only restaurant within 100 miles the name of your restaurant could be "FOOD" and you'd still make a trillion dollars.

Well, Richard Petty being the king and the first superstar of Nascar seems to line up more with Hank Williams, Sr. than with George Strait.
