He's smart but stupid, if that makes sense. I really liked the part where Farrell was explaining his long play jokes.

It also helps that he can pull top notch interviews. Farrell & Bell are staples on the late night talk show, and Burr's podcasts are strong. When he starts pulling interviews from the group that Jimmy Pardo and Kevin Pollack are able to get it will be yet another podcast put on my a good comedian/comedy writer.

Strange to recommend anything with the dreadful Howie Mandel, but Gilbert Gottfried's recent podcast with him is really interesting. His orgy story is hilarious, but of more interest is his and Gottfried's takedown of people who just love to get offended on behalf of others, and how it is killing comedy.

And it was driving me CRAZY that he kept calling it 'Mel-borne'. In Australia, its called 'Mel-bin'.

Agreed. She went with the premise of the podcast too. Should Wanda be a real friend with Conan. The conversation about vacation was great.

I like it, but it's down the priority order a bit. It's a pleasant surprise when I remember it's in my library/feed.

Just started listening to "Bag Man" from MSNBC about the fall of Spiro Agnew.

I was a kid at the time, and have read a bit about the case subsequently... but I simply had no idea about what was really going on with Agnew.

I won't spoil it, but it is jaw-dropping and very well done.

Not sure if it's his voice, or slow delivery, or what, but I haven't been able to stick with any of the ones I've started. I find him interesting, and I love deep dives into history, but my mind wanders after 15 minutes, I've fallen asleep, and I fight with myself to try and listen again until I give up after a few weeks and delete. Never had any of these problems with any other podcast.

"Drop Out" about Theranos is great. Two episodes have come out (it's a 6 or 7 parter) and my jaw keeps dropping.

I also found out yesterday that there's a Netflix docuseries(?) called Remastered that is a pairing of music and history, with episodes on Sam Cooke's death, assassination attempts on Bob Marley, who killed Jam Master Jay, Johnny Cash's visit to the Nixon white house, and others.

If you are into that...you will really like the Coursea courses from University of Rochestor. I have taken History of Rock pt 1 and Music of the Beatles. There is also History of the Stones, History of Rock pt 2, and History of Blues. The guy who teaches Beatles and Rock is a college professor and clear veteran of many bar bands.

I'm with you. I've been able to get through them, but it's honestly just too much information. I really don't retain much, so I've stopped listening. I've got a looong list of shows I keep up with, so I don't need to force anything.

Nice! I started the R&R Archaeology pod on my way to work this morning, and just got through the preamble basically. I remember spending at least a few weeks on Robert Johnson, early Blues, early Rockabilly, etc. in my college course. Sounds like this pod goes from 1945-1995, which would cut out Johnson, but probably include the end of early Blues, and most of the early Rockabilly stuff. I'll definitely check out the coursera stuff.

I'm kind of here as well. It's a lot to soak in while driving, running, etc.

Also, he released a new pod that is apparently a conversation with another historian.

Holy shit, the parallels with Trump are jaw dropping. I'm in MD and have read/watched a lot about Watergate. So, I knew Agnew was more than just "tax evasion." But holy fuckballs.. Not to this extent.

I mean this seriously: I really think that the Trump white house is following very closely from the Nixon/Agnew playbook: Demonize the Justice Department and the media, rile up your overly loyal base... Cross fingers and hope to ride things out.

I had such admiration for the Justice Department guys and Elliot Richardson after listening to that podcast.

Really digging how this has started. The host has a bit of a DanCarlin weight to his voice, and I really like the way he integrates quotes from lyrics, a la Built to Spill "You Were Right", ("from Hank to Hendrix").

There was also something about the way he described the post war U.S. that really made it hit home the WHY of African American influence in Rock and Roll, in a way I hadn't really internalized that truth before.

Some of the background soundtrack is a little quiet, but it's not a major issue.

"Trending" is a BBC podcast about the internet. Pretty good usually. A recent edition about an Australian journalist who ended up in the crosshairs of on-line trolls is terrifying.

For some reason, I'd kind of skipped/missed this story when it broke in the WSJ a few years back. But now, holy shit I can't get enough.

I'm on the last episode and I started watching the HBO document last night. So much to cover, but the thing I can't really get past is her stupid ass baritone voice. That is a huge pet peeve of mine... You usually hear it with female broadcasters, and particularly with sportscasters.

I really can't believe people took someone with such an obviously fake voice that seriously.

They wanted to believe - not just that she was as great as the media (which of course did no research before elevating her to the pantheon) - that they could make a mint.

One point that the podcast didn't raise is the fact that all of these respected leaders who were put in the board of Directors allowed their names to be used but didn't do any real due diligence. Bunch of sleazeballs who should be financially liable.

Maybe I just baked that in from my own reading on the topic, but, yeah... At one point, someone on the board (maybe earlier on in the company's existence) started getting really pissed about the run-around and put their foot down about seeing lab results. She removed that person from the board pretty quickly.

I think the only woman on the board was betsy DeVos. The rest were older men - probably dazzled by being wooed by a young woman. General Mattis, Henry Kissinger, George Schultz former Secretary of Defense William Perry, Senators Bill Frist and Sam Nunn...
