I guess it's getting older, but brawls are so stupid. hey, I loved Robin Ventura getting the piss beat out of him as much as the next guy, but I guess being a parent changes my viewpoint. I wouldn't want my child seeing that and thinking its an appropriate way to act at a baseball game.

Take you base, steal second, be done with it.

Some idiot on the today show - I think it was the news reader - said something about being appalled that Greinke had a guaranteed contract and would continue to get paid while he was out. Really? I've heard Today Show talking heads say some stupid shit, but that takes the cake. He hit a guy with a baseball, which is part of playing the game, and should not get paid because the guy he hit who is 40 lb heavier decided to fight him like some schoolyard idiot? Come on.

I'm almost never ok with throwing at a batter anywhere but between the numbers and the thighs, but if LA wants to aim for Quentin's hands and wrists when they next see him, I wouldn't have an issue.

(And I'm not 100% anti-brawl, although usually in the AL, because there does have to be some potential recourse against a headhunter. But this is stupid. A guy without a rep hitting a dipshit who gets hit a dozen times every year in a close game.)

Greinke's gotta be done for the season, no? Collarbone injuries take awhile to heal I thought, especially for a pitcher I'd have to imagine.

From what I am hearing he'll be out 6 -8 weeks. There was another player (I forget the name) who broke his collarbone on 23 Feb and is due back in the beginning of May.

It was Jeff Mathis:

I can't pitch for three months after sleeping on my neck wrong. I can't imagine an actual broken collarbone.

Nice. Well, glad he's not out for the year. Hate to see anyone get injured, especially someone like Greinke who is a) easy to root for and b) did absolutely nothing wrong in this case.

(I remember football players breaking their collarbone in preseason or Week 1 and being out for the year, so that's why I thought he might be done. Of course, football and baseball injury-wise are basically like apples and watermelons.)

1) history, and
2) Ellis' location

I very much doubt he intentionally hit him with a 3-2 pitch in a 2-1 game.

And even if he DID intentionally hit him, there's no excuse to rush the mound, especially in the NL.

What history? Greinke had hit Quentin twice before, which 17 other pitchers have also done. Just because Quentin overreacted to getting hit once before (and nothing came out of it) doesn't mean Greinke holds any ill will or would hit him on purpose late in a close game.

Ya got me. The $147MM man who accidentally hit Quentin twice prior missed his location in a tight NL game on a 3-2 pitch by four and a half feet. Inside. By accident. Again.

Can we put this behind us and make we'll-see-bitch-face a thing?

(Seriously, I didn't even know about the history part. I looked at Ellis' location and the pitch and couldn't see how it wasn't intentional - sorry for being a douche. None of the baseball writers seem to agree with me. Perhaps I should cross that off the list, too [in addition to being the first 44-y-o rookie 3B for the Mets])

This just makes Kemp look like a bigger tool.

Quentin hasn't had single digit HBP in a full season in his career (and Quentin doesn't have full seasons when he has full seasons), has lead the league the last two years and had 20 HBP in two other non-leading seasons before that. He gets hit in > 4%, 5x the average using 2012 rates. He gets hit because he stands on the plate and is willing to eat a pitch coming at him (like he did last night).

Why does Matt Kemp look like a tool (other than for rocking the leather back pack)?

I'd be pissed too if one of my guys got hurt because an idiot couldnt control his temper. I'd give Kemp a hard time if he hadnt done anything and went about his business as if nothing happened (especially considering his role as the 'outspoken team leader').

I also dont fault Hairston for rushing towards the Padres dugout after he saw them mocking Greinke over his injury.

I don't believe it was intentional, not given the count, the score. It wasn't even a head-hunting pitch; unlike the one we saw earlier in the game from a Padres pitcher. Quentin tied for the major league lead in HBPs in a season where he only played half a season. Charging the mound in that situation was a complete jackass move.

They play again, in Dodgers Stadium, next week. Should be intriguing.

Fair to say that Quentin will not be playing in that game. I see a two-week vacation in his future.

fwiw, in the interview with pool reporters after the game, Quentin said that Greinke said something to him right after he hit him that indicated it wasn't accidental and that was why he charged - he doesn't have a history of charging the mound. Quentin kept referring to the history between Greinke and him.

That pitch was halfway into the batter's box, so I don't think Quentin's HBP history necessarily matters. That being said, I don't think it was intentional. Was it even a fastball?

That's an offset camera angle. Pitch f/x has it 1.5 feet off the middle of the plate, so 6" inside the 4 ft batters box. The night before, Ethier got hit by a pitch at about 2.25 feet in, over a foot inside it.

Maybe Greinke said something to him because he had immediately taken two steps towards the mound in about as much time as it took for the ball to fall to the ground.
