It could be awesome, but not under the stupid stroke play format they chose and not if no one shows up.

I think they should have done team-type events similar to the Ryder Cup like best ball. A combination of best ball and a knockout bracket-type format would have been pretty cool.

I know they only wanted the golfers to eat up a week of time and they didn't want the guys to play one match and go home. So I get it.

What they could have done was have something like 32 two-man teams. Allow countries like the US, England and two or three others with lots of good golfers two teams. Then have a World Cup like tournament where you have group stage play over three days. Narrow that to 16 teams then play single elimination. Play four matches over three days in the knockout rounds and you've only taken up one week.

I mean, come on. If the Olypics had been in London or really just about anywhere else a big portion of these guys would have played. The scheduling would be fucked up because the majors are in the summer, but there would have been better turnout.

For athletes in sports that people give a shit about, there's no incentive for athletes to go to the olympics. Water polo and track athletes will always attend, but golfers have a lot more attractive options than the Olympics.

you guys are taped delayed again
Despite occurring in a location that is only one hour ahead of the Eastern Time Zone (where the ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET), NBC confirmed that it would continue its practice of tape delaying the opening ceremony broadcast for the United States audience; the broadcast will begin at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, resulting in the ceremony airing on a one-hour delay on the east coast, and a four-hour delay on the west. NBC had also made a request to the IOC for the Parade of Nations to be conducted in English alphabetical order rather than Portuguese, stating that it would affect viewership if the U.S. team, referred to as "Estados Unidos" in Portuguese, entered too soon. The IOC denied this change, as it runs contrary to the requirement that countries enter in the alphabetical order of the language of the host country.

Billions spent on security?

1) Fire started by worker throwing a lit cigarette into a pile of trash.

2) Fire alarms not activated.

3) Team uniforms and laptop stolen - other communications devices "rifled through"

4) No CCTV in the village.

There's a 41-year-old woman, Oksana Chusovitina, who has at least qualified to represent Uzbekistan in the vaulting event. Forty. One. As in, born a few months before Carlton Fisk's home run. She looks like your Aunt Ludmilla.

Image

Anyway, she has competed internationally under the flags of Uzbekistan, the Unified Team, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the SOVIET FREAKING UNION, and Germany. Why Germany? Well, she has a 17 year old son and he was diagnosed with Leukemia 14 years ago. She moved to Germany and used prize money and donations to get him treated. If she competes, she'll be the oldest OIympic gymnast ever, and the first to compete in 7 straight games.

I've been hacked by Tashkent Mary Carillo apparently, but the Olympics are still real to me dammit!

Oh, they're important to me. I love seeing them. Been watching a lot of trials this summer, and caught a nice documentary on the 76 women's swim team last night - The LAst Gold - that was really really well done. I just hate what these athletes are having to deal with. You think the IOC members don't have showerheads or curtains?

271 out of 400 Russian Athletes that arrived in Rio have been approved to compete. Even 1 track athlete got in despite the track team being banned. Why? Cause she's hot. The Olympics aren't stupid.

Head shot of the track star? Perhaps you can try again and we can properly evaluate her hotness. All I see is bleached hair and makeup.

Tried and failed. But upon further review . . . 6/10 on a regular human scale but 3/10 on an Olympic track star scale. Need some cushion for that pushin. Prefer some semblance of softness but probably pretty scarce in the Olympic village.

What's the logic, anyway? Is it American media thinking the goalie is the key player or something? Cynically, she's not the best looking on the team by far. More logically, she's probably a terrible person and not very interesting. For a sport you (I) want to grow as big as possible, she's the worst possible face.
