Unless "Need you tonight" by INXS is the national anthem, in which case I heard it about a billion times.
Anthems are not played anywhere other than North america. Except before international matches that is.
Also when you travel, you notice that it is possible to go more than 30 seconds when in public without seeing a national flag. I've been to 16 countries, so a smallish sample size, but you can spend an entire day in Japan or most of Europe without seeing a flag. Canada is the 2nd most flaggish country I have been in, but still nothing like the overt show you see in the States. I guess most people know what country they are in without being constantly reminded?

Also from my time in Australia...I was sitting at an outdoor bar on Australia Day in Geelong, and one of my mates said he'd read a study somewhere that said the more outwardly/showy patriotic someone was, the more likely they were to be racist.
And just then, with perfect timing, a "ute" (truck utility type thing) went driving by, with 2 HUGE Australia flags on it. And without missing a beat, the same friend said "That guy is super fucking racist".
Also...what I really really really hate? The "Surprise the family at a sporting event with the Military member who's home from oversea's duty" bullshit.

Especially in light of the fact that the military is probably paying for the teams to set this up.

I love Rovell's utter lack of specificity in the plane post.
These planes, depending on miles flown and condition, generally cost between $5 million and $65 million. A source said the planes the Patriots bought are extended range, which allows the planes to fly nonstop for about 12 hours.
A brand-new plane could cost $200 million.
So the Patriots bought a plane that could cost anywhere between $5 and $200 million!

Elway attended the inauguration and wrote a letter, on team letterhead, lobbying for the Senate to confirm Gorsuch. The Broncos are one of the teams that should be most interested in Kaepernick (they even tried to trade for him after the 2015 season, when CK played much worse than he did in 2016), but they won't touch him due to Elway's right-wing politics.
Fantasy draft is just a couple of weeks away, but I spent a couple of minutes trying to remember who the Broncos' QB is and ultimately had to check online.
Also, what kind of sad loser is going to support the Raiders in Oakland this year. The next two seasons are going to be like one of those cuckold porn videos with the Black Hole playing the part of the husband..

For a variety of reasons, including not wanting to see a player die on the field (which I'm convinced is going to happen someday soon), I'm trying to swear off football this year.
But dammit, the "WYTS" features on Deadspin are hilarious.

Anyway, the NO take about the city itself was just a little harsher than I expected.
He really went all in on Philly.
Fuck him. As for Philly, no one who talks about it as an up-and-coming the city has ever been west of 45th Street. Philly’s subway system literally goes up and down just three streets, and until less than a year ago it used tokens. Now there’s a new pass system, and it’s very simple, but in perfect Philly fashion, everyone is too stupid to understand even that somehow, which is why everyone thinks it sucks. The stadiums are in a shitty, out of the way giant parking lot that is walkable to nothing except the hulking Xfinity Live supermeatheadbar. Philly’s big culinary creations are the complicated concoctions of “hot meat and cheese on bread” and “cold meat and cheese on bread.” There is, for some reason, a giant dude in the skyline. There is, for some other reason, a statue of a fictional boxer that is one of the city’s top tourist attractions. The humidity is approximately 275 percent in summer.
Very happy with trade. Watkins on the field is a legit #1 which we haven't had since Holt. Gaines was expendable as Wade brought in his own guy from Den to be the #2 CB. Watkins is a one-year lease with option to buy. If he stays healthy he will be well worth a big contract or Franchise tag. If not, we delve into a good WR FA class next off season. Well worth a 2nd rd pick to find out, especially given Les Snead's incompetence in the draft. I am a bit bemused by the internet criticism being thrown at the Rams. I think most (if not all) teams would trade a second rounder and a depth CB for one year of Watkins. Had the NE/Pit/Sea of the League done the exact same deal, I'm sure 'steal' would be the word of the day.
"Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back." -Al Swearengen
I am not criticizing the Rams for this but I don't think Watkins is the superstar WR a lot of people seem to think he is.
He's so much better than Trent Richardson but I remember having a slightly similar thought about that "steal" of a trade that was only called a steal because the Browns were involved.

When healthy and motivated, he is really good. Not pro-bowl good, but good.
As I said, I would be shocked if he plays 16 games.

Man would I love to see some sanctimonious media member try to question Marshawn about that. The degree to which he just does not give a shit about the ceremonial aspects of pro sports is so great.

Agreed, am disappointed I haven't already seen quotes of people asking him about it.
