I think we have a new standard bearer for weird challenge decisions.

I'd be surprised if the Cubs manage any hits off him.

Meanwhile, it's Chapman in the ninth at Progressive.

I’m just hoping that the boys in the replay center tweet that they would have called Chisenhall out at some point before this game ends.

Just saw the Nationals lineup and damn, that's scary.

Is it really that much scarier than Zobrist ... Bryant ... Rizzo ... Contreras ... Schwarber?

I hope those names strike fear into others. But none of Zobrist, Contreras, or Schwarber have OPSs or stats as good as Washington's 2-5 hitters.

Bryant through Schwarber are all good enough that they *can* do as well or better than Washington's guys. But it's less likely.

You see? Nothing to fear!

Obviously Girardi should have challenged, but looking at the zoomed in slo-mo replay, I think the ball may have brushed Chisenhall's hand/batting glove (and changed its spin) before hitting the knob of the bat. If that's the case, I believe HBP is the right ruling. Either way, just a brutal loss.

It looked to me like it hit the hand also. Either way ISO t think there was clear evidence to overturn.

No. It didn't hit his hand. In fact, it didn't even come close to hitting his hands.

Yeah, ok. Looks way different from that angle. Yanks were hosed.

(Still a long way to go to pay back the Jeffrey Maier thing though.)

No, I think the Jeffrey Maier thing was just an overblown trope that took on a life of its own because of the eventual O's futility spanning the next decade plus...

This was worse. This wasn't an umpire gaffe, but about a manager who refused to challenge a play he literally had nothing to lose if he did. This was about a manager who refused to listen to his catcher who was screaming 'foul ball'. This was about a manager who got up in the post game press conference and blathered about not hearing back from his video room guy. He breathed life into an Indians team that was about to head to the Bronx, series tied and they'd be starting their 3 and 4 starters v Tanaka and Severino.

Jeff Passan sums him up rather damningly.

In the moment, even if you suspected that the call was probably right, (1) it’s extremely high leverage, the difference between the third out and bases loaded and (2) the peripherals all point to a reversal. Not only do you have your own catcher protesting, but the batter showed no sign of pain even though supposedly he had just been hit in the pinky. What more could you possibly need?

I was on a little mini-vacation and missed the game but I can't imagine (1) how Girardi didn't challenge and (2) what odds I would have put on him back next year before and after that game. As close to an unforgivable in-game fuck up as I can imagine a manager of his status making.

What if Daniel Murphy was running full tilt out of the box there instead of watching what was supposed to be the final out of the inning land in Kyle Schwarber's glove?

Not a single Cub has reached base via a hit through 6 innings. But pitch count is at 90 for Scherzer. How much rope does Baker give him if it remains a close game? That's a wicked tough decision if he's at 115-120 pitches and there's a 1-0 lead to protect in the ninth.

This has turned into a hell of a fun game.

I'm so glad the Cubs won last year, because I would be a complete wreck right now otherwise.

Pretty sure Dusty would go to about 180 during a no-hitter before he even got someone warming.
