Well played CBC. The video is blocked outside of Canada, but not before I got to see two commercials! Now, off to find a feed for Republic of Doyle!
Do you know how to use a proxy? If not, the lads here can fuck you up for free. It's rather simple. Just a slight modification to your browser settings (usually) depending on what sort of computer machine you're using.

Olympic Coverage
Last night, after midnight, I saw that all two dozen or so (yes, that many) CBC feed channels were active. Telus Optik has given an entire block to CBC coverage and I'm assuming the other providers have as well. Anyway, it was impressive; midnight here, noon there, middle of the night in eastern Canada. Some of the channels were clearly recording bulk/stock footage for later use; editing together segments and whatnot. Others had practice events going on (men's downhill skiing was very impressive). You could see the camera positions being adjusted on the hill for best angles, etc. No announcers ever (sports is infinitely better with no announcers), just the background noise of Russian winter interspersed with the occasional distant sound of Russian disco. (Call it я-pop?) The HD looked stellar. The alpine venues look great, world class. Get used to seeing coyи everywhere. And just like Vancouver, the host city doesn't have a flake of snow on the ground.
I also like the menu items at the top of the feed like 'standings' and 'startlist'. This is a very good start considering the coverage on CTV of Vancouver and London were a disaster. Hate the CBC all we want and their shows really suck, but they know how to do Olympics.

Also did you see the feature of Canada's 7 men's figure skating world champions but 0 gold medals?
Lot of pressure on Patrick Chan to break the curse and already this morning, he nearly fell in the new team event and is in 3rd.

Absolutely. The one thing (the only thing) that CBC does right is winter sports coverage. It wasn't that long ago that other countries would contract all the remaining CBC camera technicians that weren't taken to the games. CBC local news coverage used to pretty much disappear during those days, there was simply nobody left to film anything.

AB_skin_test wrote:A stray dog

I'm going with a shirtless Putin holding a stray soaked in gasoline. He will take the torch from Tretiak, light the dog on fire and drop the dog into the Olympic Cauldron to light the flame. Putin will then casually walk over to Tretiak, pull out a pistol and summarily execute Tretiak with a single shot to his temple for losing the Miracle on Ice game. Putin will betray no emotion, and slowly walk off.

Watching the opening ceremonies and since the parade of athletes are coming out in order of the Russian alphabet, it is messing me up.

As Poland's athletes are walking in to the stadium, the CBC announcer intones, "Poland and Russia have had their issues in the past." Ya think?

#SochiProblems has taken off on the Twitter machine. Apparently one of the Olympic rings failed to light during the opening ceremony. This is such a major embarrassment to the Russkies. Has there ever been an Olympic games that started off as a train wreck? Sure, Munich wasn't exactly a success, but it didn't start that way. Just unbelievable, even by Russian standards.

I like this venue for a new demonstration sport:

They have to wait for the video tape to fly back from Sochi to make the 8pm primetime show.

They think having three judges is gonna fix that sport?

Mexico '68 was a clusterfuck from the start, with traffic so bad athletes were missing start times despite 2hr cushions, and air pollution in the Mexico autumn heat. Oh, beating, arresting and killing all those student protesters a week before the games was kind of unseemly as well.

Just watching the Opening Ceremonies now . . . the Russian contingent enters to music by the fake teen lesbian act TATU? Wow. Wouldn't have bet on that.

(Unsurprisingly the CBC broadcasters don't pick up on this but, really, it is somewhat unrealistic for them to spot that one)

ETA: I am hearing that right, am I? Sure sounds like them.

I thought they abandoned that act because at one point both of them were pregnant. Apparently not. Well, it may not be them playing in the stadium but something that sounds a helluva lot like them.

They may have edited in some rehearsal footage. VANOC and CTV should have thought of that while the Opening Ceremonies were being disasterified in Vancouver.

!00% if your Grandparents came from a crappy country with no winter sports. Or if you are a Brit who can slide off a ski jump ramp without dying.

I've always sort of envied people who have that route available. Closest I could come would be if Quebec seceded and dodgeball was made an Olympic sport.

In Russia, "ballon prisonnier" has a whole different meaning.
