There is a reason all the Republicans running in 2022 called for massive spending cuts and refused to say specifically what they would cut, because most of the items are widely popular, even amongst Conservatives.sancarlos wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 11:41 am This debt ceiling issue is really frustrating. They cut trillions of dollars of revenue with corporate tax breaks, and then want to shore it up by taking away all the benefits. Benefits provided to poor people. This Medicaid thing where they want to tie work requirements to it is a an example. The underlying premise is that people are poor because they are lazy. Such bullshit.

Re: Random Politics
Its almost like they don't actually care about debt, they just use it when out of office to get the Dems to cave on more upward transfers.
Re: Random Politics
Ah, so Nancy Pelosi is behind Feinstein not stepping down because Gavin Newsom would appoint a black woman (and progressive), Barbara Lee, to her seat and not Adam Schiff, Pelosi's favorite. (Also note that Katie Porter is running for that seat as well.)
Gotta love the old guard Democrats who would rather be diet Republicans than progressive at any at cost.

Disheartening anecdote about Dems staying home. My son came home from school saying they were handing out voter registration cards at school and the overwhelming majority of kids were saying they won't vote if it's Biden v. Trump because they both suck.

Ask them which party is trying to make LGBT teenagers take their own lives and why they shouldn't vote against that.

Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

Lets not do all this again ... everyone here knows I vote every party line every single election. Pretending that everyone who isn't a Trump devotee should be inspired to counter-vote is ignoring why so many don't in the first place.

I agree we shouldn't do this again! So don't fucking do it! Snark is fun, and snark is all well and good on this site but if it's already been legislated here and your bona fides are legit, why post that at all? Surely you can see that it isn't just Trump, but the GOP legislatures (many of which are not completely overrun with Trumpers.) It's not a presidential election touchpoint since they already struck down Roe so the fight is at the state level now.

Re: Random Politics
The response was directly about Pelosi choosing to play politics over doing the job the Dems are tasked with in a finite amount of time.A_B wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 3:30 pm I agree we shouldn't do this again! Re: Random Politics
From a whole-Senate vote perspective, Feinstein clearly should have resigned a long time ago. FFS.
But if she resigned, would the Dems be able to automatically appoint a replacement on the Judiciary Committee? Or would they have to go through the same process as if they were replacing her while she remained in the Senate?
Ten judges have been confirmed by the Senate this month. Do we know if that would've been doable if Feinstein had resigned?

Re: Random Politics
From all I've read and listened to, unless she resigns or passes away, then Democrats can literally do nothing to temporarily replace her for anything unless the Republicans approve.
Edit:
I double checked. Looks like, according to a small blurb from this CNN story, "Even if Feinstein retired, the process would be the same to replace her on the Judiciary Committee."
So maybe it isn't cut and dry. Could've sworn it was.
So the judiciary committee just stays deadlocked until there are 60 votes to confirm a new appointee? That doesn't make sense to me.

I did conflate your comment with Ljams’s for whatever reason. So my bad there. I don’t regret what I said per se but I definitely misconnected some dots. I will rescind the fuck off as well since I got confused.mister d wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 4:13 pmThe response was directly about Pelosi choosing to play politics over doing the job the Dems are tasked with in a finite amount of time.A_B wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 3:30 pm I agree we shouldn't do this again! Re: Random Politics
Got caught up watching golf and missed the brief OT in the hockey game which I learned when I switched back to the local ABC channel and the beginning of the slightly delayed 6PM news was on and the first story they mentioned was “Travel Horror” because some dude from Minnesota booked a room at a Holiday Inn in Long Island City and arrived only to find the hotel has been taken over by “the government” to house asylum seekers.
“Man receives refund and has to book elsewhere” wasn’t how they presented the story.

I felt aswirl with warm secretions.
Re: Random Politics
This happened in my hometown except it was veterans kicked out of the hotel for migrants but wow guess what it was all a lie and homeless people were paid to lie about it by a non-profit which focuses on “preemies and veterans”.

To get something banned, shouldn't you be able to correctly identify the author?
This kid is Black.
And even more disturbing is that this ban occurred in the city of Miami, not out in some hole in the panhandle.

Florida mother behind ban on Amanda Gorman poem has Proud Boys links
Wait...there's more...The parent behind Amanda Gorman’s poem ban in a Florida school appears to have attended Proud Boys rallies and has previously posted antisemitic memes online.
The parent, first identified by the Miami Herald as Daily Salinas, made headlines this week after reports emerged of her effort to ban a series of books at the elementary Bob Graham education center in Miami Lakes where her two children attend.
She also revealed that she only read snippets of the books that she sought to ban at the education center. The books include The ABCs of Black History, poetry by Langston Hughes and books on Cuba, all of which she has criticized for “indirect hate messages”, references to critical race theory and gender indoctrination.
“They have to read for me because I’m not an expert,” Salinas told JTA. “I’m not a reader. I’m not a book person. I’m a mom involved in my children’s education.”
