The league's regular 5 minute recap of the night's games, (and their 8 minute extended recap) both start with about 2 seconds of the initial line brawl (because these videos always start with the opening faceoff) and then cut away completely. Stupid fucking league.

Yeah, as I posted earlier, you knew the NHL wasn't going to just let that Rangers' statement go without a response, after fining the Sharks $100k for a much more benign statement after the Raffi Torres year-long suspension.

These fines make it seem like the league is a little cash poor. Wouldn't you normally punish a team by taking away draft picks or docking them points in the standings?

Because a fine is fake outrage. The Coyotes recently lost their first round pick for tampering, which is a real offense.

Listening to The Lead this morning had my blood boiling. I very casually follow hockey and knew about Tom Wilson, but holy shit the league is fucked up. How do you have someone like that as the Director of Player Safety??

Parros is just a cog. The real issue starts with Colin Campbell. Absolute dinosaur and how that guy still had a job after his email leak tell you everything.

I actually thought Parros was going to be a really, really good choice. He knows the violent side of hockey, but he always seemed to play inside the rules and had a Princeton education. He could have been a perfect bridge from past to present but ... that didn't work out. Mostly all the same shit.

And absolutely, Colin Campbell is a massive problem. Him and his son can get fucked, even though his son seemed pretty ok on his own.

jeez this stuff is beyond maddening.

respect that Parros may be intelligent or whatnot but frankly it's irrelevant to me and so fucking NHL to have a former fringe-ECHL goon be the head of discipline. Whether they want it to or not, it creates the very-real image that the league steers towards protecting the (so-called) tough players rather than the actual skill players.

a brilliant non-cheapshot/fighting ex-player like Henrik Sedin should be the next head of discipline if they want anybody to start taking them seriously.

Ehhh ... I get not having a guy who would only have been on one side of any potential incidents and by being "clean", Parros kinda fit the middle. But then again maybe the perfect middle was Shanahan so I don't know. Maybe have a neurologist run DoPS.

It doesn't matter who is the cog, the league controls everything. It's like communism, you have to fall in line. Rangers getting fined and suspended for contempt.

Wilson just had to be suspended for ONE game. How hard was that?

well....i'm not sure how Parros is in the "middle" (career: 1092 PIM, 36 points) :D

but don't you think optics (which i'm going to kick myself in the nuts having used that word twice now already...jeez) DO matter here? Like...i'm literally laughing that they continually put a goon in charge of discipline, even if he is a figurehead.

Fighting is legal, Max!

Middle meaning he was never (I'm almost positive) suspended, so as the deterrent/enforcer he was the literal middle of guys who are targeted and guys who played cheap.

I have a pretty eclectic YouTube feed, and one of the guys that pops up is Pat McAfee... Admittedly knows very little about hockey. Tuned in to the shitfest game SPECIFICALLY because he was aware it was going to be a shitfest.

Folks on his staff let him know who Parros was and he was like..."Oh, so, he's just protecting a fellow goon."

I relay all that just to say I totally agree that Parros needs to be on the right side of things, or it just looks really really bad.

I'm going to use your word, optics. The NHL has maybe the worse marketing and optics in the sports world. Dinosaurs running this league and they don't care that it's 2021. They know better. A sport is supposed to welcome new fans and new ideas. The NHL often calls new fans stupid.

Well, I also should've relayed that he LOVED the shitfest game and he and his staff think that should happen once a week.

/grain of salt

We've talked on this board a lot on this topic over the years. The league made carrying a goon not really feasible due to rule changes. The problem is when a freak (size + athleticism + psychopath) like Wilson comes along and you don't really have anyone on the roster capable of meting out on-the-ice justice to him.

It's one thing to board guys. What he did with Panarin really was borderline criminal. If he'd put his head into this... Really had flashbacks of Bertuzzi-Moore.

Its why I wasn't kidding at all about someone pulling a Graves-on-Lemiuex in that game. What does fighting Tom Wilson with guys smaller than Tom Wilson prove? Fuck him. If he tries to hurt someone on your team and you can't respond the same way with the players you have, the players you have hurt him in a different way. Use the stick, knee-on-knee, whatever. Let him and their fans counter-cry that your team was differently dirty while he's hoping to recover from surgery in time for the playoffs.

How to handle Wilson is easy. Call the rules. Suspended him alot. You do not see other sports having to police violence themselves. In football, if a receiver get clocked by a safety across the middle, you don't see a brawl breakout, you don't see retribution. It's 15 yards and move on. The problem in hockey is 100% culture from the age of 10.

So if the Bruins win one of last two games tonight and tomorrow vs Isles and Caps, it Pens-Isles/Caps-Bruins. If they lose both, Pens-Bruins/Caps-Isles. What are we rooting for, Rass? Isles are fucking good but I still think I'd rather have the Caps and Bruins beat up on each other for a round before a potential match-up.

I was talking about that with my dad over the weekend and decided I'm still a little too close to the 0-4 sweep by the Isles a couple of years ago to be reasonable about it. Plus they haven't played NYI in months. Don't know if that's good or bad either.

The Islanders are a "heavy" team and so are the Bruins. The Caps may be more skilled, but you'd likely come out of a series with them with less injuries (unless Tom Wilson goes on another berserker).

It was never good, but refusing to let a player get surgery seems really, really bad. How can you get any kind of legit free agent if they know that's a possibility.
