So the Concacaf championship was last week and qualification for it starts this week. Awesome

I have been to early round Concacaf Champions League matches in Toronto. They are grim affairs watched by a couple of thousand of people from the country where the visitors hail from. (Toronto has people from every country you could name. I was at a game with 4,000 Salvadoreans and less than a thousand Toronto FC fans. The level of play when you get a bad MLS team playing the third best team from Honduras or El Salvador is excruciating.

Our friends up North have 5 teams total in their event.
The U.S. has 91 teams and games only started the last week in April (which were teams from the U.S. Amateur leagues). B.T.W. Harpo is a great name for a team. MLS teams don't enter until Mid June

Qualification can be earned through MLS league play as well as USOC, ergo, it started with the season.

I played in the extremely early rounds of the US Open a bunch of times in the 90s and 00s. We almost made it to the round of "get your ass handed to you by a semi-pro team" a couple of those years. (That team was stacked with d1 and a handful of professionals who had played overseas or in the MISL.)

Apologies for the spoiler.

I watched Monday night anyways, and I am glad I had the spoiler, otherwise I may have resorted to taking up cutting to deal with the pain. Utterly dominated the entire game with no sign of Swansea threatening. The final 25 minutes, you just knew Arsenal were going to score. Wilshire was getting to the goal line and swinging in dangerous balls at will (too bad Theo replaced Giroud at that point). I really thought Swansea's goal went off the post, and I didn't think there was a chance in hell it went in. It looked like the ref didn't see it as a goal, either. Classic expression on his face when he pointed to the goal tech watch and shrugged his shoulders. That has to be such a relief to get that call taken out of his hands.

I also realized United is closer to Arsenal than I thought. If ManU wins on Sunday, Arsenal is 1 point down with a game in hand. That would make it tightttttt, tighter than an Arsenal shirt.

If these arrests were just about Qatar, maybe. It sounds like they are focused on shenanigans in South/Central America, so no? Maybe they can get these guys to roll on the big guys back in Europe. Who I am sure are mostly white.

There's not much better than facing up against your rival and watching their wheels completely come off. Especially in their USOC "fortress". Looks like Deuce could be facing a major USSF suspension for taking the referees book and ripping it up. The end of the match saw Seattle fans throwing garbage at the Timbers bench and the refs had to be police-escorted out of the stadium. Total meltdown.

That second red card was given based on an absolutely comical dive. And I have never seen a player do what will hereafter be known as "doing a Dempsey".

How many seats at that little field? Interesting they don't choose to play at the big stadium.

There is some Argentine flair in the reaction, but it was a legitimate cleat-stomping. (And that's been pretty much been a straight red consistently in MLS this season.)

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe fans don't show up for Lamar Hunt Cup games? But I would think the rivalry with Portland would bring a crowd.

Dempsey's stupid act should cost him the first 2 Gold Cup matches. US Soccer rules call for a 6 match ban for "assaulting a referee," and the definition of assault includes damaging the referee's property. Going to be hard to argue that one. The suspension calls for a ban from all matches, regardless of competition, so he would miss 4 Sounders games and 2 Gold Cup games. That is if they count concurrent games. The Sounders play one day before the USMNT, so he obviously wouldn't have played in both. I have no idea how they determine which games count towards the suspension. It'll be interesting to see if Jurgen names Clint to the team if he is suspended.

I'm very curious to see how US Soccer handles this. Do they have Dempsey file and appeal, and rule on the appeal after the Gold Cup? The Sounders would be pissed, as it means Dempsey missing games for the Gold Cup, then having to serve 6 games. Can Jurgen keep Dempsey as the captain after that? Really an unbelievable move.

I don't think they can suspend him for MLS games since this wasn't an MLS competition. All punishment would have to come from US Soccer, meaning it can only be US Open Cup or USMNT games. If what I've read is correct.

Does anyone have any tips for someone playing outdoor soccer for the first time in his life?

First game was last week. Played RB and RM for the first part and found I enjoyed the midfield much more (This team was... interesting. There was no tactical discussion until halftime, so the first half was awkward). And then for the final 15 minutes I was in the middle, which wasn't as bad as I was expecting because at that point I had learned to read the game decently and was able to use my running around ability to compensate for my utter lack of skill.

Shining moment was playing a guy offside on purpose on a corner. He scored because I left him unmarked next to the near post. He was off by two steps and had no desire to move.
