Interesting article about the many, many tours that Santos took when Pele played for them.

(I saw Santos play - I think - Torino in Toronto when I was 6 or 7. Put a few beers in my and I'll give you some vivid memories of the game, but in reality, I just know that I was there...)

Anyway - these "fundraising" tours of the big teams are nothing new...

Went over to Shitlando last night to see the mighty purples take on West Brom. Pulis was in full track suit. The third string MLSers beat the Baggies. Plastic pitches suck.

Yohann Cabaye to Crystal Palace. No appreciable losses. If we can sew up another 'tender and a striker, I'll be real excited about our season.

Portugal beat Tahiti to take the Beach Soccer World Cup. The game was 5-3. Tahiti's captain and star did not play in the final because he is Mormon and the final was Sunday.

I actually watched a good bit of that. Weird sport that I'm not sure was entertaining or not. I mean, bicycle kicks are cool, but when the primary means of getting a shot off is to juggle the ball off the knee with your back to the goal to set up the bike?

I dunno, I think the word I'd use is disjointed.

I was shocked to see the beach soccer powers of Russia, Switzerland and Iran. Russia were two time defending champs. They lost the semifinal when their captain gave the home crowd the finger and got sent off.

Red Bulls Reserves get a 4-2 win over Chelsea last night. 16 year old Tyler Adams (plays for US U-17 and mostly with Red Bulls II) had a nice header goal. Franklin Castellanos and 2 from Sean Davis meant that all goals were scored by Red Bulls Homegrown players. Sure it was a friendly against preseason Chelsea, but nice showing. Red Bulls had played the night before in a US Open cup loss to Philadelphia. As a result Red Bulls had to play way more youth and reserves than normally would in a money grab game of this type.

As if we need more proof that the Special One Is Special. After last night's carpet bagger game in DC (~80K at the match)
At the end of the session, Mourinho was asked to respond to comments by the wife of Real Madrid Coach Rafa Benitez. She had joked that her husband is always “tidying up [Mourinho’s] messes” at the Special One’s previous clubs.

Said Mourinho: “The lady is a bit confused, with all respect. I’m not laughing. Because her husband went to Chelsea to replace Roberto Di Matteo and he went to Real Madrid and replaced Carlo Ancelotti. The only club where her husband replaces me was at Inter Milan, where in six months he destroyed the best team in Europe at the time. And for her also to think about me and to speak about me, I think the lady needs to occupy her time and if she takes care of her husband’s diet she will have less time to speak about me.”

We went to the NWSL Seattle Reign game last night (against SkyBlue FC...from beautiful Piscataway, NJ). And I gotta say....I was pleasantly surprised. Pretty good turnout (~4400 people) on a miserable night weather wise. And the level of play was pretty solid, I thought. Enjoyable evening....too bad the stadium they plan in (old Memorial Stadium at the Seattle Center) is such a dump.

On Friday, I will be one of the hundreds if not a few thousands in attendance at BMO field for the Canada-Belize World Cup Qualifier!

What the hell, tickets were cheap, the CNE (like a county fair on steroids) is taking place around the stadium. And one of the great things about international matches in Toronto is that there are always thousands of fans cheering for the other team. Always fun to party with Uruguayans, St. Lucians, Salvadoreans or in this case Belizeans. One thing these games have taught me is that it doesn't matter how small the country is - there are natives of that place living here in Toronto. And they all represent well.

I knew I heard the name, but didn't know where. Must have been O'Hara's MiB interview. Fuck, if I knew she was playing that close by, I would have gone to some games. Sounds like I still can. Or not, as wednesday is the last game of the season. Hopefully the league doesn't fold in the offseason.
