Re: Apples 2014
I had one of these last night:
It was good! Nice and crisp, not too sweet.

Re: Apples 2014
Picked up a couple Sweetangos yesterday. Sweet, tart, crisp. That’s a good Apple.

Apples in Georgia got killed by frost I think. Seemed like the orchards were short

If they aren't from NY or WA, they aren't worth eating. Right Diamond? And the Honeycrisps from WA are small and inferior.

Apple elitism if you ask me. They probably don't even like the yellow apples from the middle of the country. Fuck that, if corn ain't from NJ, it ain't worth eating. Same with tomatoes and blueberries, though Maine is even better.wlu_lax6 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 1:22 pmApple elitism if you ask me. Re: Apples 2014
I was surprised when Nebraska let another corn-heavy state into the Big 10 without a big filibuster.
I fact-checked myself, and Iowa and Illinois are bigger corn states, but bah gawd they don't have it in their Nickname!

Re: Apples 2014
The nickname/mascot of the HS here in town is the Farmers, and you can find little knock-offs of the Nebraska cornhusker dude in various spots around the football stadium. Though they got a new scoreboard over the summer so I think the most prominent one might be gone.
They also used to make use of a knock-off version of the Miami "U", just color-swapped to match the HS colors. I think they've moved away from that recently, and I can't remember if the little cornhusker (sorry, farmer) had that "U" on his overalls or not.

I can't tell whether your mocking me but Georgia has good apples dammit. I've tasted them. Tasted just like Massachusetts apples. Sour sweet.

I'm not an apple snob most of the year, but I do know when it's Sweetango season that's all I buy.

Was not mocking you. Just saw the "blue" states in the original post and figured there was a way to call out Apple Elitism.
But I will throw down with anyone who thinks bagels from Georgia are good...or are even should be called bagels...and I have had good peaches from other states.

Re: Apples 2014
Maybe more than any other state/fruit combo, you gotta get your peaches from Georgia, ffs! But that may just be propaganda and strong marketing.wlu_lax6 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 2:42 pmWas not mocking you. Citgo, I wasn't making fun of you at all, just feigning produce snobbery. I'm sure almost every type of produce is better locally. Looking at apples at the grocery store, I can't recall seeing them come from anywhere other than NY or WA. The WA ones tend to be smaller and harder, but I bet that's because the larger softer types don't travel as well and are kept closer to home.

The little town of Palisade, Colorado is renowned for their peaches. At least, in western Colorado, anyway.

Re: Apples 2014
Fwiw... I've not seen many peaches in Georgia. Peaches come from South Carolina. Marketing. I've also not had a great bagel here but Goldbergs is yummy and a small chain so available and I heard theres a place in Decatur.

They also have some good wineries and meadaries!

Generally an Envy guy these days, which I basically consider a better version of the Gala? Then usually Honeycrisps if Envy's aren't available.
There were no Envy's during my last trip, but they did have something new called a Wild Twist which looked very similar, plus they were on sale. I really like them, sweet but with a tart that is almost citrusy.

I'll be on the lookout, that sounds good. To derail this thread, WTF is up with pears this year? They have been tiny all year, rarely ripe, and the centers tend to turn brown and mushy while the outside is still not soft.rass wrote: ↑Fri Jan 20, 2023 2:03 pm Generally an Envy guy these days, which I basically consider a better version of the Gala? The wife eats pears all the time. Got some more cosmic crisp because they looked good at the store. Much better than my first go round. Maybe I didn't have the right time of year or just got a better batch. At any rate, solid option.A_B wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 3:18 pmI have a cosmic crisp waiting for me that I am about to eat. The investment in planting them in WA is gargantuan. I have to report holdings in storage every month for USApple Association and they added them to the form this year, removing Jonagold.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 5:33 pmThey are quite good. I guess there's an ongoing lawsuit between Washington State Univ (where it was developed) and their private partner about the patent and distribution of them.
Anyone had an Evercrisp? Honeycrisp/Fuji cross. Hard as rock, last forever, taste really good.
edit:sp
Just had a Sugar Bee yesterday. It was too sweet for me. These new honeycrisp crosses are getting so numerous I can't keep track.
Update: Solid, but no sweetango nor honeycrisp. The peel is the problem. Lot of red delicious vibes in that peel. Would benefit form peeling, but who has time for that?

Coincidentally, just got some cosmics yesterday. I picked them because they were the cheapest apples in the place that looked good. Tasted great. Score!
