I loved BSSM, and really enjoy John Frusciante's work, but otherwise agree about RHCP.

When I first got into playing guitar Frusciante was one of the guys who just blew my mind.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 2:42 pm I loved BSSM, and really enjoy John Frusciante's work, but otherwise agree about RHCP.

A friend in College SWEARS that Debbie Harry invented rap with that song.
I give him a pass because he taught me how to play my first chords and left his Martin flattop at my apartment for two years. God what a beautiful sounding instrument.
I should play guitar more.

Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
If you gave those lyrics to someone who'd never heard the song and asked "Rock & Roll Hall of Famer" or "Suburban Wine Mom Freestyle", 0.00% would get the answer right.
(I'm going to ignore the belief that rap could have been invented in 1980. Its too much for me to deal with right now.)

Add a third to that, Giff.
Also I don't like RHCP either.

White kids from eastern kentucky. Always factor that in when I speak of my bygone days.mister d wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 3:15 pm If you gave those lyrics to someone who'd never heard the song and asked "Rock & Roll Hall of Famer" or "Suburban Wine Mom Freestyle", 0.00% would get the answer right.

Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
Not a fan at all.
"Under The Bridge" is okay, but they always struck me as making music that Eagles fans liked to listen to when they felt like rebels.
ETA: Blondie are trash. "Rapture" is one of the 20 worst popular songs of all time.

Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
You know that trope in 80's movies where there's a scene at a party/club/concert and it basically turns into a music video for the band for a bit. Was watching Thrashin' (1986) when lo that band turns out to be a very young RHCP. Never really was a fan of theirs but I definitely get how they were shaped by their time/place.
Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
I think she was one of the first to bring rap into a rock song. Maybe that’s what he meant.A_B wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 3:01 pmA friend in College SWEARS that Debbie Harry invented rap with that song.

Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
I really don't care for any of the Peppers after BSSM, but Mother's Milk was my jam Freshman year in college. I also liked the earlier albums (Uplift Mofo, Freaky Styley, etc) that said I probably haven't listened to any of them in 10+ years.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
I'm with bapo! Rapture may not be a great song, but Debbie Harry slander is not to be tolerated. Blondie had many bad songs, but they also had many great songs. And, they all had Debbie Harry, which was a plus.
Humorous digression : My wife has varying degrees of eye-rolling regarding my crushes past and present on Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Lucinda Williams, Elizabeth Cook, and Margo Price.

I hold artists accountable for the worst of their work. Like if REM was a 4 album band and had "Shiny Happy People" and "Radio Song", I'm not sure I'd feel close to the same about them.
Also, since this is the de facto Cobain thread for now ...

Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
Have I ever mentioned Lester Bangs' biography of Blondie? It's hilarious. Bangs' band ran in the same circles as Blondie, and he was jealous that Blondie made it big, while his band never did. So he wrote a short book about how overrated Blondie was and how much he hated them. It's a hundred pages of petty score-settling.
Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
This is a little weird. I saw your post but it didn't make sense to me so I went to Lester Bangs' wiki page and realized he's a different person than Lance Bangs. Then I read his page and towards the end it mentions his praise for Toots and the Maytals and in a dream I had last night I remember telling someone that Toots was way ahead of the gender curve because all of the Maytals were female then immediately thinking (in my dream) that I had no idea if that was true and knew it probably wasn't. Very insecure in that one.
The end.
The end.

If you argue this - it's cuz you were going to score points with a girl.

A true power move is writing a song that’s named after your band.

weirdly enough, way down on my list of good Seger songs.

Yeah, I could name a dozen Bob Seger songs I like better than that one. But, to each his own.
Couple good examples:

Eh - I’m not ranking Seger’s greatest hits. This is the song that rallies the troops. Especially love’s losers.

"At Seventeen" (Janis Ian) has to be one of the most quietly devastating songs that gets played on classic rock stations, right?
Re: Greatest fucking classic rock radio single of all time
So frigging grim. Haven't heard it in 30 years and it still makes me want to curl up in a ball.tennbengal wrote: ↑Mon Jul 25, 2022 12:56 pm "At Seventeen" (Janis Ian) has to be one of the most quietly devastating songs that gets played on classic rock stations, right?
