Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Last night I was at the grocery store and walked into the beer aisle just as a sketchy looking guy was pulling a can of beer off the shelve, popping it open, and chugging it. Mid-chug, he looked up at me, shrugged, and continued. When he finished it he just put the empty back on the shelf and strolled off.
Have to admire the effort.

Here's a lesson I learned this evening for the 537th time - don't tell your wife that she is being persistently negative.

I’ve done that myself a few times. There’s no way that conversation ends with her admitting you’re right.

An expression I can't stand is - "I was just thinking out loud."
Which basically means that you were talking.

The amount of buzz words and phrases I'm triggered by because of their use in the military is vast. Just to name a few:
"Just to piggyback off of what Sergeant So-in-so said..."
"I'm tracking..."
"If the military wanted you to have [something], it would have been issued to you."

Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Or, I'm just spitballing here. Which... fucking gross.
I actually use a version of this, because some people are too literal and don't understand what a brainstorming session is, especially if it pops up in the middle of a formal meeting.
Like, our webmaster has to be kept off of all emails where drafts of web content is being bandied about, because she just starts putting things up (not live, but in draft/holding) and then gets pissed when things change. Fucking annoying.
Anyways, I definitely say something like "let's just kick this idea around" or something like that so certain people don't write it down and then quote it later in the "well, you said we were doing X, Y, Z."

The incorrect 'I could care less' makes me hoppin' mad

This doesn't bother me nearly as much as,"everything happens for a reason." Always tempted to respond with, "or we assign a reason to everything regardless of what happens."

That is a specifically American expression that makes absolutely no sense.

Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
I don't mind the occasional "it is what it is," which is a rough version SSDD or SNAFU.
My issue is with people that use it all the fucking time and often where it's just a lazy way out of actually trying to understand or examine something.
"These coaches keep taking extra time on the field, biting into our session."
"Yeah, it is what it is."
NO, it's fucking not. You just don't want to confront those guys.

No one under the age of 100 says "serviettes," not even in Quebec.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 4:24 pmOh, zip it. You guys say z as zed and you call napkins serviettes like a bunch of poseurs.

And the language was invented in England where they say "Zed," so therefore we are right.

fair enough, I'm old and remember them using that term... I guess napkins = feminine hygiene product (or did)
Zed's dead baby... Zed's dead.

"Toque" is a very nice word. Much better than the currently-popular "beanie". This and some other words I used (because I grew up with Canadian parents) confuse(d) my friends. Besides Toque, there was tea-towel (instead of dish towel), and Mum instead of Mom.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 4:24 pmOh, zip it. Any positive Canadian contributions to the language are canceled out by calling it "pop."

Makes more sense than this...
"water into which carbonic acid has been forced under pressure." "It rarely contains soda in any form; but the name originally applied when sodium carbonate was contained in it has been retained" [Century Dictionary, 1902].

They misdrew the line in New Mexico. I haven't heard pop from locals. Only from military members from Michigan, Wisconsin,..etc.

I've been awake for 45 minutes and am already sick to death of all the "clever" and "hilarious" April Fool's gags I've seen.
From Facebook friends claiming that it's their birthday to Tottenham Hotspur being sold to Robert Kraft's company to McDonalds' new pickle burger... the frivolity must end.
