I’m secretly rooting for him to go to Binghamton as it’s 2 miles from my parents. I played a lot of sports on campus as a kid. I love the idea of him having my parents for a free meal or to get away for a few hours, and for them of course. Plus it’ll be nice combining visits on trips. And it’s a great school, and cheaper out of state than Rutgers is in state.

Oldest has received admission to two of the schools she has applied. One she isn't super excited about, the ole alma mater, Ball State. She doesn't really want to go there. And thankfully she has other options.

She also got early acceptance to Columbia College Chicago. She is super excited about this. They are one of the top schools for the field she would like to go into. They even gave her a Presidential Scholarship that will obviously help offset the difference between them and a state school.

We are so proud of her after having a terrible junior year. She had a very close friend pass away last November from leukemia. It was really hard on her and made her lose focus. Then she was suspended for a week after getting ratted out for taking an edible after the school play. Mind you, she was able to do all of her work from home that week (nothing like when I was in school serving a suspension), but the return to school and the stigma and rumors were quite a bit for a 17 year old.

So the fact that she was accepted into her first choice and given a scholarship from the school is amazing.

Fantastic news, great that she was able to pull through her junior year, can't imagine how difficult that was for her. Great that she knows where she wants to go and got a scholarship, too!

Every time my parents visit or we head up there, I get bags of marinated spiedies to grill at home. And the beauty of Wegmans spreading, they carry spiedie marinade. Can't believe they haven't caught on in the rest of the country. That said, Binghamton ex-pats have opened spiedie shops around the country. I believe there is one in Raleigh and another in the suburbs of Atlanta.

There is some skiing, but it's all lame. Billy Baldwin and Paul Reiser are the big celebrities. There were a couple of SportsCenter hosts arounf the 90's from Binghamton. And it's the home of the worst-named minor league baseball team, the Rumble Ponies. (Binghamton declared itself the Carousel Capital of the World at some point).

Good stuff and some fortitude.

I did not know much about Columbia College Chicago...
Some interesting Alumni. Aidy Bryant from SNL, Shecky Greene, Phyllis Diller, Common, Andy Dick (well did not graduate), Jake Lloyd (Young Anakin Skywalker), Andy Richter, Pat Sajak, Kayne West (attended for a bit).

They have a really good comedy writing program and their music production school is really good. It comes off as a vocational college because they are really hands on. Not many, if any, fluff/required classes that everyone has to take. And small class sizes.

In 2020 the full state cross country postseason was canceled due to Covid.

In 2021 she broke her toe days before sectionals (basically state quarterfinals). She was stretching out in the shower and she kicked the faucet.

Her 2022 season was wiped out by a stress fracture she sustained training over the summer that took months to diagnose.

Today, her senior year, the oldest qualified for the state finals. She topped her best time on the course, a time she put down earlier this season, by over 25 seconds*. Today’s course will also be used for the finals next weekend and seems to be considered one of the toughest HS XC courses in the country.

*might also mean that she had a bad day at the earlier event

Applications are all in over here for TU2 jr. Carnegie Mellon, Penn State and Pitt. Penn State is probably first choice for him. He doesn't want a city school and with the 75% tuition break he wouldn't have any loans to deal with. The kid works his ass off at school. Completely unlike his parents.
