It looks like a knit traditional cravat cut. Not to be confused with what is more recently known as a cravat, which is more of an ascot. A century ago, cravat meant a different style*. That one also looks like it was handmade, probably for him, and bends (or bows) in the middle the way a tightly knit yarn would. And it appears to pre-date the bias-cut that revolutionized ties. Handknit wool yarn ties were more common in the 1910s so that may also be a handmedown of sorts.

You'd never know it from those sepia tinted 1920s photos but men's ties were typically brightly colored at the time; stripes, tartans and geometric patterns abounded.

* It had to. Everyone wore a waistcoat (vest) with their suits. And that had a big effect on tie design.
