He did, but that was back when the tournament didn't have as many games.
Still had to win 3 games to win the tournament even back in the early 80s, compared to 4 for most teams when tournament was at its biggest. Not much difference.

First, Carnesseca was a thousand years ago. Second, St. Johns was an independent back in the day. Third, he spent some time coaching the Nets in the ABA.

Yeah, for some reason I thought he was an incorrect answer, so I was justifying. Carry on. Nothing to see here but a big doofus.

The first Big East Tournament was in 1980. He coached St. Johns until the early 90s. Stands to reason he'd get 10 wins, especially since they were a national power in the mid-80s.

Oh, I get it. I was pretty sure this was a right answer. I'm just surprised others were too. His era was a long time ago. Not so with Calhoun and Boheim. And John Thompson was far more legendary. Also, I don't take this place as having much of a NY metro area population. How many lived anywhere near St. Johns in the Carnesseca era, which began in the mid 60s? It's a tough SC crowd for me to figure.

Can't believe I didn't think of Richter. Despite being a huge Isles fan back in the day, I patterned my goaltending style largely after Richter. Glen Healy wasn't quite the role model to look up mechanics wise. His game was quite ugly, but moderately effective.

I love Elway as an answer to the Broncos question. Didn't even occur to me to think outside of a RB.

B. If you ask 100 sports fans to think of Big East coaches, most of them would picture anyone from 1985ish. That's the era. It's like asking about Slam Dunk participants and being surprised that anyone thought of Spud Webb

That's a good explanation. See, I know so little about the Rangers myself that I forgot he played there. I just know that we (even the American branch) Celtics hate the fucking Rangers.

How many were over 10 in 1980 and also following east coast, NYC metro in particular, basketball? I would have guessed a small number. And these people would know about Boheim, Calhoun, and Thompson.

Could be that these three split the moderately informed population. And the more informed old-timers thought they had something more obscure when they typed in Carnesseca. I certainly did. I mean, I know who Sonny Dove was. Totally forgot about Rollie, the even better answer.

I've learned to let go of the extensive analysis when producing answers. I just try to get it for sure right in most cases. Post-hoc though, it's interesting. Carnesseca took perhaps one second as an answer. It fit my prototype nicely. Certainly correct, several more obvious answers available, and old. Perhaps not old enough. I tend to think of him as a 60s-70s guy. But obviously he was there in the early 80s and 90s when I wasn't paying much attention, and probably did some TV after that.

I thought of and considered all those guys, but picked Carnasecca. Because, I have some internal magic mechanism that always leads me to choose the correct answer with the highest number of points.

And let's not forget the major story of Rangers being relegated due to financial issues, while 3 USMNT players were there. Edu, Bocanegra and Bedoya. It was a big deal for USMNT fans to see where they ended up. I would think Celtic - Rangers is probably the most famous rivalry in soccer. 30 years ago I knew about the Protestant/Catholic violent tie to this rivalry, and saw images of the visiting fans in one of the stadiums essentially in a caged section, with the home fans throwing bottles and shit at the cage, while idiots on both sides attempted to fight through the fencing. Really scary shit.

It is so cute that Cerrano answered Newcastle. Like anyone cares about playing Newcastle.

I had only a vague knowledge of any of this. I'm impressed that there are people here who do. For me, it was just the Celtic perspective of fuck the fucking Rangers. So I knew there was a massive, life-threatening, rivalry.

I have often felt the same, and have changed answers based on this. In this latest round, I immediately went with Floyd Little in the Denver question. Extremely correct and old, like AFL old. Total double check.

But then I began to wonder if I was doing it again. I mean, Denver should have a picture of Little on their uniforms. And the franchise should be named the Denver Littles. He is The Man. The Barry Sanders of Denver. So I checked down at the line of scrimmage. Fortunately Otis Armstrong was also certainly correct and at least kind of old.

Oddly, only one person went with Floyd Little, so I felt like a chump for abandoning him. But Armstrong was a two pointer, so it passed. Good thing I don't know who Sammy Winder is or I probably would have ended up out of the play-offs. Ignorance can be helpful.

Just looked up Sammy Winder's Pro Football Reference page. He sucked. Never had a YPA of 4.0 in 9 seasons, two of which ended up in the Pro Bowl.

Seriously. This is his 1986 Pro Bowl season:

Rushing: 240 for 789, 3.3 YPA, 9 rushing TDs
Receiving: 26 for 171, 6.6 YPR, 5 receiving TDs.

Whenever debating John Elway's excellence in the All-Time list, someone should just point to this page and say "He went to a Super Bowl with this fucking guy as his RB. In the 1980s no less."

That had nothing to do with rivalries and everything to do with Geordies being no class drunken idiots. Speaking of Geordies, I recently saw something about a show in the UK called Geordie Shore. Complete copy of Jersey Shore, but with meathead/slutty Geordies. I gotta see some clips, but probably won't understand a damned thing that comes out of their mouths.

I avoided her thinking she'd be a big point answer. My daughter sings that All About the Base song all the time. My Mom did too, when they visited.
