ESPN.com Redesign

Post by A_B »

I can only assume it's a joke for april fool's day. However, all the scores and stories appear to be legit. But it's a shit show.

I hated the last version, so this is a step forward in my view.

Yeah. Without passing judgement (I rarely just access via the main page) there seems to be too much effort put into it for it to be a joke. Though I guess they've given themselves a cover if everyone feels like AB_the_picky.

I know there is a certain level of comfort in just what I am used to and the sudden shock of a new change elicits strong emotions. However, SI.com and ESPN FC (their soccer site) went to this endless type of scrolling a while back and I now avoid those sites like the plague. That will be harder to do with SI, because it was always still the easiest place to get scores (Fucking Sportsfrog, man) but I don't like their score bar at first glance.

I'm not against change (I help with our company's web presence and am an advocate for changing our site feel more often...it's been a couple of years now and I am itching to get a redesign done) but the beta testers here can fuck off.

I hate change!

The empty column on the left seems like a weird thing for a website that big to have.

I was greeted by a full page ad, followed by an autoplay video (which may have been an ad as well). I'll pass.

I wonder how all of their national writers feel now that everything they do is mashed together with their team bloggers.

Aesthetically I think it's fine, and the white seems like an effort to move toward a Grantland-like design, and I do like how the score tracker at the top now "pops" better with the team logos, but agree with the complaints of it being too cluttered with the personalization and social media stuff. I rarely log in to the site, and when I do it usually forgets me within a few sessions.

But I need to know what's actually important to ESPN's editorial staff!

Oh, wait. Just set my favorites to Yankees, Red Sox, Patriots, and Duke. Problem solved.

I would do away with the part on the right, if that's what you mean. If i wanted to read those twitter accounts, I would follow them. Better use of that spot would be quick links to ESPN3 programming.

Love this idea. I'm lukewarm on the Twitter accounts at best. Imagine if my employer had one of my recent lifting or Toby-related tweets up on the front page of its site? No...

I hate the twitter feeds, but now that I got my adblock enabled and the newness isn't such a shock it's not terrible. I kind of like the teams thing on the left side, but the problem is manchester united...I ofter record the games and don't want to see the score during the work day. I need to dig around and see if I can reorder them.

Still hate infinite scroll. But apparently time spent on a website is now more important than page views.

Do NOT like clicking on a score in the header and being directed to a Gamecast window instead of the box score. It does load just as quickly and it's pretty clean, but boo anyway.

I'm sure if the redesign doesn't happen I don't even notice this article. It's one that surely deserves to be written, but looks wildly out of place on a site like ESPN.

And I do have to say, ESPN is league's better on mobile now.

Damn. That was good and depressing. Maybe not a great read while I'm trying to figure out my life and career's next step.

Steve Winwood makes for an interesting third-party to that love triangle.

Took me literally all day, but I finally got it. Wasn't even a Traffic/Winwood disconnect, but my head kept reading the headline correctly. Funny how that works sometimes.

Remember when a dedicated "Playoffs" section of a sports site would take you to a nice nice overview page with a bracket and essential information up top? Here's what you get instead:

http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2015/st ... d-coverage

Awful.
