MLB - June 2015

Post by brian »

I just can't get as worked up as some people about Royals fans stuffing the ballot box for the All-Star Game. Letting fans vote for the starters in the first place is dumb. And it's obviously showing their general ignorance and stupidity. So kind of a win-win.

I love it. Nothing would be funnier than the Royals normal starting 8 all going out to their positions in the 1st inning of the ASG.

What would be even funnier would be the NL stomping the AL because a bunch of Royals got to play 3-4 innings and then KC going to Game 7 again this year, but this time in a NL park where they get beat again, because MLB is stupid enough to let the ASG decide home-field advantage for the World Series.

It's also fun to point out that of all the Royals in the top three in voting at their positions, the only ones crazy out of line, according to Fangraphs' WAR, are Infante and Perez.

Perez: 1st in voting, 6th in WAR
Hosmer: 2nd, 2nd
Infante: 10th, 2nd
Moustakas: 1st, 2nd
Escobar: 1st, 5th
Gordon: 3rd, 1st among LF
Cain: 1st, 2nd among CF (to Trout)

I've always thought fan voting was dumb. But it's no worse than a name who's out for the year or a huge chunk of the first half being selected a starter.

Traded Jordan Zimmerman for him about 2 hours before the game. No offense to the great Adrian Beltre, but stay home.

He was still on the waiver wire in my league, lucked into him thanks to alert from the mlb app. I hope he rakes enough that they simply find a spot for him in LF when Beltre comes back.

Give him a first base glove or DH him or something. Players that rake don't get sent back down. He's going to hit like 200 HRs into that overhang.

In a cooler world, Beltre gets traded to the Mets for some pitching and he gets some goddamn exposure for once in his should-be-Hall-of-Fame career.

In my cool world, the Red Sox have 11 sucky outfielders in March and then by June they have to trade for an even suckier outfielder from a division rival just to avoid calling up their sucky busted prospect and exposing him for the 3rd time.

That motherfucker has spinal stenosis but, yeah, he's another Hall of Fame talent who got f'ed.

Seriously, check this list out. I know defensive numbers are shaky and all that, but Beltre is 9th fWAR over the last 3 decades among position players. Above one guy who is assured to go in defensive merits and another one who will either get in or get a strong look.

(Guys like Ichiro, Gwynn and Boggs were the same way and I'll bet their BABIP gains are on ground balls. Anecdotally, all four had an ability to repeatedly fire singles into gaps in the infield.)

I think he's probably on the other side of "hit a lot of really fucking hard line drives into the gaps" with the guy on the Tigers who is totally going to keep it up for another decade.

I wish we could do shadow careers of the first four where they just swung, especially given that one Boggs season and the whole "Ichiro could jack 30 if he took that approach" stuff.

Between Gallo, Bryant and Harper, that's a lot of young talent from one city (Las Vegas) in the bigs now. At least as far as quality vs. quantity.

I looked up Brad Ausmus's contract this morning to see if the Tigers could eat whatever salary is remaining. Finding out it was one year after the current one pleased me.

while i don't necessarily disagree, i can never understand the outrage when the previous method of WS home field advantage was *every-other-year*

It should just be whichever league has a better interleague record gets home field. That seems pretty obvious, right?

(I don't mind not doing "most wins", because playing in a crappy division is too much of an advantage.)

Yeah, I kinda am too. Pretty awesome day for an Astros fan. Correa debut, McCullers (the 41st pick in the same draft who has been fairly impressive so far in his first stint) with another start and two of the top five picks in the draft. And for the first time in a long time, the draft taking a backseat to the major league team.
