Women's World Cup

Great Save by Solo. Could be 1-0 Australia.

It is still utter bullshit that this tourney is on turf.

So far Quin's favorite part, after getting over the fact that girls are playing soccer, is when the ref gave #11 the "Quin, you're talking too much" hand gesture.

What a great goal. Just guided it sidefoot into the corner.

Just as Morgan was starting to warm up too.

I'm thinking Holiday and Rapinoe need to pick up yellows in the next game to prevent potentially missing a knockout round game.

Something I noticed during the US game was how far away the ref was from the play. She seemed to be purposely staying 20-30 yards from the ball and making big assumptions about which direction the ball would go. In the EPL, International, Liga Mx, and even MLS it seemed like the refs were closer to the action.

They mentioned this on the broadcast. She was garbage in the second half, and I'm just going to say what wasn't said last night: She was out of shape and the game got away from her. She spent so much time bitching at both teams for yapping at her in the first, she simply ran out of steam in the second half. It was bizarre.

The Yellow Card rule is fucking ridiculous. And I really wonder what drove the decision to trot this out for the WWC. It's really hard not to think about Blatter and all those dudes at FIFA that couldn't pick Alex Morgan out of a lineup (literally) making this type of rule and ascribing some kind of sexist undertones.

Can you imagine if this was put in place for the men? People would be LOSING THEIR MINDS. I still don't understand why they keep upping the ante on the men's side, frankly. Are injuries due to hard fouls up? Are the number of goals on the decline? What's the rationale? There may very well be a reason, but I haven't seen or heard it.

=-=-=-=-=-=

If the US doesn't fix its midfield and backline, they are not going very far in this tournament. Solo stood on her head in the first half and we got a very fortunate deflection resulting in a hugely deceptive 1-1 half time score. Conservatively, that could've been a 3-0 scoreline. I don't like the formation, which appeared to be a 433, with Rapinoe dropping back from a high line. Just play a 442 and keep your number advantage in the middle. That also puts Press in a more comfortable position out wide, instead whatever she was trying to do in the first... She was totally lost out there.

Speaking of Rapinoe, what a bizarre game for her. She was absolutely horrible on 90 percent of her crosses. She was a fucking wizard with the ball at her feet taking people on and making smart passes on the ground. She was transcendent at times, especially as her confidence grew in the second half.

So, with that said, given how the game was flowing... WTF was that Aussie thinking, letting her basically walk into the box and rip that shot?

But she was kind of cute, so I'll give her a pass.

It seems like the Women's game has dramatically improved, unless I just remember the games being slower and less skilled than it was. That was a really enjoyable game. Rapinoe has always been my favorite player, but man was she fun to watch. Her skilled on the ball is awesome, and she has such a quick burst. Glad to see Alex Morgan take the field. I thought she was missing the tournament. She looked good.

Instead of picking up intentional cards, the US just needs to beat Sweden, and as long as Nigeria doesn't beat Australia, the US wins the group, and Rapinoe and Holiday can sit.

Hope Solo was the difference in that game. Switch goalies, and the result probably flips. I think she could play in a lower tier professional mens league.

Edit to switch order of matchups.

This game that went off at 5 is actually on the Fox mothership, at least here in DC.

Seeing the empty stadium in Montreal pisses me off to no end.

1) Montreal is NOT a good sports town

2) Toronto is. Plus, the ethnic communities and soccer fan here would have filled BMO Field for every game. Yet for some reason, the Pan Am games (which open next month) precluded this city from getting any games.

OK, that's pretty dumb.
The Pan Am committee convinced city officials to decline the opportunity to host the World Cup because they didn't want the people of Toronto to be distracted by a second "world class" sporting event in the same summer.

A completely asinine move. Sports fans have been known to attend more than one game in a seven week period. Maybe if we had a Mayor at the time who wasn't busy sneaking off to parks to smoke crack and drink vodka during working hours, this wouldn't have happened.

This Canadian team reminds me of every soccer team my teenaged daughter has played on - two or three really good plyers, a couple of decent players and about three or four girls who look lost on the field.

It will take a miracle for them to challenge for a medal.

She has been Ok, but the team bogged down pretty heavily against Sweden, so I don't see it as a knock on her, but more of a nod to Heath and Morgan, who I thought brought a bit more creativity to yesterday's game.

Leroux off the bench is a pretty good weapon to have in your arsenal. And Ellis is likely banking on Morgan and Wambach to round into form by next Monday. Much more of a cohesive offensive effort last night.

We went to the game vs Nigeria yesterday and had a blast, even with sitting 3 rows in front of the Nigerian contingent. I should have known we were in trouble when they came toting in their drums. They kept it up all game....singing, dancing, having a blast. They were awesome and super friendly and cool to hang with.

The takeaways from the game:

1-Seems like Wambach and Morgan were beginning to gel some. It was clear that they haven't gotten much playing time together.

2-Sydney LeRoux can be a dynamic player. She came off the bench and was a burst of energy.

3-The US midfield seemed weak to my eyes. If the action doesn't go through Rapinoe, they can't seem to hold possession.

4-The US back line was excellent. Nigeria only had 2 shots, and they weren't very troubling. Of course, it helps that Hope Solo is there to clean up any mistakes. The best scoring chance they had was off a set piece, but it was high, and I think that Solo would have blocked it if it had been on frame.

Great, great experience...

I guess...but wouldn't it have been better if it had been 130 degrees?

Most likely, but we had to settle for a perfect sunny 75 degree day.

And I should mention that the BC Place stadium was fantastic. I hadn't been in there since '89, when I saw the Rolling Stones there. Back then, they had the old MetroDome/SilverDome style inflatable roof. Now they've redone the roof and the center portion of it is retractable. It was super cool....
