And, it apparently turns out that the school resource officer didn't actually kill the shooter. The shooter killed himself. And while he was doing that, the resource officer shot him. In the hand.
Well, even police officer only even hit their target like 25-30% of the time. This isn't damning to the school resource guy IMO...what he did likely caused the shooter to kill himself. Absent the resource officer things likely would have been worse, no?
That's a good point.
This is where the gun control folks fuck up. School Resource Officer = Police Officer in the vast majority of places in America. Making the argument that a cop showing up with a gun isn't going to result in some pimple-faced, never fired a shot at "live" targets, shitting his pants and offing himself is just a dumb argument.

Yes, we'd all love to wave a magic wand and make the guns go poof... Shit ain't happening. Getting crazy about putting cops in schools is stupid. Hell, even arguing that former-military or police that have turned to teaching as a profession shouldn't be armed is a pretty dumb (political) argument. Again, most of these kids aren't going to know what to do when confronted with an adult who knows what he/she is doing starts firing back. MOST of these kids put the gun under their chin when confronted.

I'm not psyched about adding guns to the mix. But let's focus on the low hanging fruit RIGHT NOW. Most Americans agree, civilians don't need military weapons being sold to civilians. We had an AR ban back in the 90s and less people were shot by them as a result. It's not complicated. Stop trying to complicate things. Don't get distracted.

I want to be clear: I respect you guys that are on the "no guns in school" side of things. I'm really talking about the politics of things. Yes, it sucks to admit that we need cops in our schools, even out in the 'burbs. That's our reality. In order to chip away at that reality, we need to get some sensible, low hanging fruit passed. Compromise to get to a new reality, then start the harder work of truly changing the culture.

My department has had a rookie fire a rifle into his patrol car and an officer shoot the counter in the lobby of our gun range. These are highly trained officers with bachelors degrees working for a selective department that gets the better hires. Things happen. I don’t want guns in the classroom.

Also, my town could put one of these well paid, well educated (relatively), well trained cops in each school if they wanted to. Where I grew up? In Detroit? What kinds of cops will end up in those classrooms? What are the odds they will be members of the community with no implicit bias against black boys and girls in those classrooms? Nil.

This is not low hanging policy fruit in my opinion. It’s dangerous.

Given the death/wounded toll, how much you want to bet the shooter was using a handgun?

That was actually a really good discussion. Noir was very reasonable, and I agreed with a lot of what he said. The one thing that drove me nuts was the discussion of John Oliver. For those who didn't listen or watch, Noir was upset because John Oliver did a 20 minute piece on NRA-TV, and didn't even acknowledge Noir, who has 3 shows. He was upset that they clearly did a ton of research and ignored his show, because they wanted to make NRA-TV seem irrational. Rogan explained that Oliver tries to take a comedic approach, and Noir is reasonable, so there is no comedy to mine there, and no shock value. Plus, as a progressive White guy, Oliver might not have felt comfortable attacking a black guy. Noir kept disagreeing with Rogan on the premise of Oliver's show and the perspective of the piece on NRA-TV. Noir kept arguing about how Oliver's MO is to push an agenda with false narratives. Then Noir was shocked to learn Oliver is white. Umm, is it remotely possible to watch 2 seconds of John Oliver and think he is black? Fuck, if you are going to argue about the premise of a show, and you are shocked to learn Oliver is white, you clearly have never seen him, and are in no position to debate the value of his show. It drove me nuts, because the point of Noir's argument was that they ignored a major part of NRA-TV while criticizing it, while he criticized Oliver's show without even realizing Oliver was white!

But other than that, he was really reasonable, and the NRA would be much better off having him as a spokesperson rather than Dana Loesch or Wayne LaPierre. Then again, how would the NRA's base feel about a black guy being the face of the organization?

Truth be told, I subscribed to his channel before he joined the NRA payroll. After he did, I wrote him off. I remember after a few viral videos Glenn Beck had him on his show and he could barely contain his excitement that a non-white, educated person agreed with him.

Ultimately, if he can't see how his situation is and doesn't quit the NRA after the murder of Philando Castile and subsequent clearing of all charges by the cop involved, then I'm good.

I'm glad the discussion was worthwhile though.

Yeah, I was interested in what he had to say until I realized that he works for the NRA. That mostly renders his opinions moot. "It's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on him not understanding it." It may well be that he honestly agrees with them on everything, but there's no way to really know at this point.

That's what I was thinking. If he's an employee of that group, whatever he says that may be interesting is washed away by the fact that he is actively working for a group that thinks it's unAmerican to deny the mentally ill the right to carry machine guns.

If he's just a guy espousing his opinions, than okay, fine. But he cashes NRA cheques.

I don't think he works for the NRA. He said he wasn't an NRA spokesperson. I don't know what exactly NRA TV is, a youtube channel, actual TV channel or what. I had the impression Noir makes videos and NRA posts them. I guess even if the NRA doesn't pay him directly, I'm sure he benefits financially by having the NRA share his videos or provide a platform.

NRA TV is owned and operated by the NRA (obv) and it is available not just on YouTube, but also places like Roku and AppleTV.

It's lower in the operational budget range (reportedly), but this guy is into something like Season 5 or 6 of a series he hosts.

He is in no way an independent operator on this stuff, even though I think he comes to most of his opinions "honestly."

(He was one of the many NRA shills that went after the Parkland students. He can go fuck himself.)
