Opening Night/Day/Week

I'm still not used to this Sunday night thing. Much less Houston (AL).

The season has started on a Sunday night for years!

At least they're not starting in Japan!

Are we sure this isn't the 139th day of spring training? Especially with the Astros resembling a split squad team.

I didn't even take one inning for the first blown call of the season.
I could see he was safe from here!

Houston teams do well against Dallas teams when it's the first game in a new league. So, 57 more of these or so this year?

If I was sure that pitch counts weren't an issue, I'd predict a no-hitter today.

Also, Justin Verlander is going up against a lineup of someone, Mauer, someone, someone, someone, someone, someone, someone, and someone.

Guess what two teams are still in the fourth inning at 1:40 into the game?

from Getting Blanked today:
The Minnesota Twins rotation to start the season looks like this: Vance Worley/Kevin Correia/Mike Pelfrey/Liam Hendriks/Cole DeVries.

That’s it. That’s the joke.

It appears they are turning things around on the prospect front, eschewing their “pitch to contact” mantra in favor of the radical idea to draft and develop pitchers who are good. But those pitchers and Byron Buxton won’t save Joe Mauer in 2013. 100 losses remain a distinct possibility.

It's even funnier this year now that both teams suck. How many 4:30 9-inning games between sub-.500 Yankee and Red Sox teams will the nation be subjected to on ESPN? 13? 14?

Also, I'm just going to go ahead and get this annual rant out of the way on opening day and then try not to bring it up again. The MLB blackout rules for Extra Innings/MLB.tv is a fucking joke.

Image

SIX teams in Southern Nevada are blacked out. (The three SoCal teams -- which makes sense, but also the two Northern California teams -- some 450 miles away and Arizona). If you're a St. Louis Cardinals fan living in the Oklahoma panhandle? Sorry, no Cards games for you. The Cardinals claim about the entire Midwest as their "local area" including all of Oklahoma and Iowa.

What's weird about this one is that you have about 7 guys who have never played in a Yanks-Sox game before, another half dozen who have played in less than 10, and yet they don't miss a beat.

Aren't blackouts based on where you could get local cable showing those teams?

No. That would make some sense. MLB is not allowed to make any sense. Teams can claim whatever they want to be their "region". Theoretically (and I'm kinda surprised they haven't done it) the Yankees could claim the entire United States.

They haven't even started changing pitchers yet. Then Jackie Bradley gets to listen to 10 renditions of God Bless America, pick his favorite to actually perform, then have the other 9 try and hit balls over head. Spoiler alert - he catches them all.

The Yankees offer local in-market streaming. It's for a price, of course, but not a ridiculous one. Why don't other teams do that?

In case it wasn't clear, I'd totally be fine with what you're talking about. I can get Dodgers/Angels games on basic cable, so if they were blacked out on MLB.tv I'd deal.

You get into some hilariously fucked up scenarios when you really look at the map. For example, the Padres are NOT blacked out in the LA area. Yet they are in Las Vegas.

I thought I was watching Matthew Sheppard the way this game is dragging along.

EDIT: Oh, damn dougs. You weren't even talking about Bucs-Cubs. Which is through 4.5 at about the same mark.

This is Justin Verlander's sixth Opening Day start. He's never won on Opening Day before.

Vin Scully just told me to pull up a chair.

Magic is wearing the Ralph Branca jersey; I take that as a good sign. But I will admit; it is good to see the Dogers not be a joke franchise anymore.

(But where is Sandy Koufax? Ah, there he is. Overdue reconciliation.)

Mike Trouut's OPS 2012: .000
Bryce Harper's 2.500

No contest as to which one you'd like to have forevermore.

But having interleague play in the first game is ODD.

Trout and Harper are going to be compared with each other for the rest of their careers, but there's no right or wrong answer as to which one you'd rather have (at this point in their career at least).

Clayton Kerwshaw reasons that if you pitch a shutout and hit a home run, you cannot lose the game. His teammates scored three more; dogs 4-0. Not Matt Cain's fault: 6IP 4H 0R 1BB 8Ks. A long first inning doomed him to an early exit.
