I'm so excited to see a side-by-side of the Leafs' lines at season open and the last game of the year. Should be high comedy.

And, let's not forget, as is their annual event, Lupul and Van Reimsdyk are shut down due to injury.

Yea. I burned a roster spot for 5 weeks on JvR before they finally came out and said he was done for the year. I have chosen to learn from this experience and dropped Ryan O'Reily today.

Degenj - you must be thrilled. I saw one Flames fan on twitter claiming that Jokipakka is already a better player than Russell.

Ryan Lambert said the same. Some team always makes the upgrade-age-downgrade-skill major trade. Fun that it wasn't us sending Kreider or Hayes for Staal.

yup, Russell isn't that good. He plays hard and blocks a lot of shots but the Flames never have the puck so somebody has to block those shots.

If the Stars make the Conference final, that pick is a first rounder (27-30)

Hawks sign ECHL #1/ AHL #2 or 3 goalie to NHL deal for rest of season.

Hawks trade to get backup goalie from CAR.

Hawks have 7 goalies for 3 teams, and Crawford starts 85% of the NHL games. Hawks also have Visinten on IR.

????

Profit?

Man this league is ridiculous sometimes.

3 hours after the deadline there is still a backlog of trades at the league office.

Caps and Anaheim with a relatively rare low goal thriller last night. Caps go coast to coast (travel wise) with I think their 5th game in about a week.

Man, I don't know if it's the ugly orange jerseys but Anaheim looks like it's full of giant ogre dudes. Just really big and fast.

But the Caps really held their own and Holtby, while not exactly struggling of late, still hasn't been as sharp after the ASG... Last night, after that first goal, he shut it down. And he was amazing in the shootout.

NHL likely wanted a Canada/U.S. Original Six matchup for the game. Detroit the obvious choice on the U.S. side. Toronto edges out Montreal by virtue of a better outdoor stadium probably.

Well, if the teams that always make the nationally televised NBC games are anything to go by, there were only seven contenders, really - Detroit, Toronto, New York Rangers, Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and (by dint of their great tv ratings) Buffalo.

This is the NHL's 100th anniversary game. It was never going to be anything other than Original Six teams.

The Red Wings have been a great team over the years, no doubt. And, I love to watch Datsyuk. But you know, this season they are at real risk of blowing their consecutive playoff appearance streak.

Not to threadjack, but I assume they'd want to do AL/NL. Yankees/Reds or Yankees/Cardinals makes the most sense. MAYBE Yankees/Dodgers but that would be a distant third IMO.

I really honestly seriously can't tell if you and SC are fucking with us or really believe this crap.

When the NFL has its 100th anniversary game in 5 years are they going to have a Jaguars/Seahawks game to celebrate it?

This is crazy, ridiculous shit here. Celebrate the teams in the leagues that have the most history. I fucking hate the Packers, but if the NFL has a centennial game to celebrate the league in 2021 it's probably going to be Packers-someone (probably the Bears, especially since AFC opponents are somewhat random).

I mean, c'mon now.

If I can speak for both of us, our comments aren't about the 100th anniversary teams. We're not focusing our comments on this or any other specific event. Just a generalized sigh of acknowledgement that there are only 7 to 9 teams the NHL and tv ever have any interest in featuring.

Those are the only teams on national tv.

Seahawks have been on tv a lot because they are the champs. The LA Kings two time champs are never on tv.

If the NBA ran their league like the NHL Golden State would never be on tv.

The Centenial game actually makes sense but the other games should be spread around more.

Not saying there isn't a definite bias towards a certain few teams, but LA's start times don't exactly help. They pretty much have to be a road team on a national game.

Sure, let the Kings be a road team in a national game. How do they show Golden State on ABC?
The Clippers are home on ABC at 12:30pm local this Saturday.

OR Why doesn't NBC run NHL games on Sunday night starting in March in the SNF timeslot? It's not like they're showing anything important.

6 Sunday nights to end the regular season showing contending teams that leads into the playoffs.

Because NBC tries to make money.

1.7 million viewers on Saturday night of Detroit and Colorado outdoors last month. NBC's best hockey result ever? 4.5 million viewers for 2011 Winter Classic.

A two-hour "Dateline" got 5.94 million viewers on Sunday night and was the highest-rated show among adults 18-49 during the 9-11pm time slot. A two-hour repeat of "The Voice" did almost as well from 7-9pm.

NBC is doing what is best.

Chicken and Egg argument isn't it. Hockey won't be popular until it's on tv, tv won't put it on until it's popular.
For 4 to 6 weeks is it worth the risk to improve hockey ratings overall?

It's even easier this year with Washington in 1st place.

If the argument is that some other teams should be featured on NBC telecasts occasionally, sure (though DSafe's point is correct -- not a lot of people in Arizona or around the country especially give a fuck about the Coyotes for example).

If you're saying anything other than Original Six teams should be playing in a 100th anniversary celebration game then you're dead nuts wrong.

The 100th anniversary game is perfect, but with that in mind Detroit should have played Dallas or Tampa at the Big House two years ago.

Exposure isn't the reason hockey is 4th so, no, its probably not worth getting the same results you've gotten the past.

Yeah, it's a little weird to reverse that game. Not sure the NHL had the 100th anniversary on their radar then. (Since it was in the Big House I personally think they should have played Columbus. Would have been a cheeky nod to the tOSU-UM rivalry).

Yup forgot about Columbus. And the 100th anniversary has been on the radar for awhile, the NHL just didn't plan properly.

It really should have been an outdoor 100th anniversary all-star game instead of the winter classic.

on another note, Wideman served the 19th of a 20 game suspension last night. The appeal is still being heard.
