College Football Week 6

Post by brian »

Randy Edsall is apparently out as Maryland coach after this week.

I'm presuming that's if they don't beat Ohio State, as that would be kind of a bad look. Upset the #1 team in the country and then fire your coach. I wouldn't put that past Maryland though. That said, I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll stay within four TDs of the Bucks.

Also, it's Central-Western weekend and as such, I will be filling your Facebook timelines with plenty of anti-Kalamazoo propaganda. Respond accordingly.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Edsall left UConn to become Maryland coach Jan. 2, 2011 without telling his players; they found out via emails and text messages and tweets as they flew back from a loss in the Fiesta Bowl. Edsall was in Maryland, finalizing his deal to become the Maryland coach.

-snip-

Edsall said he regretted not speaking to his players face-to-face after accepting the Maryland job. Edsall left the teamafter the Fiesta Bowl and flew to Maryland, never addressing his players. He said "circumstances" at Maryland did not allow him to speak to the players.
This allegedly came on the heels of Edsall making Donald Brown tell the rest of the team he was leaving UConn early for the NFL draft.

Sickening. Gruesome. Unfortunately I'm talking about Nick Chubb's knee injury and not CMU's performance today.

Oh Rutgers...

Switching between that game and the TCU-K. State insanity made for a very entertaining evening.

But man, that poor Rutgers quarterback will never hear the end of it.

Looks like USC needs a new coach.

http://i1.wp.com/www.baltimorefishbowl. ... 00x209.jpg
Athletic Director Pat Haden made the announcement Sunday, noting that offensive coordinator Clay Helton will take over as interim head coach. Sarkisian reportedly showed up at USC facilities Sunday “in no condition to work.” According to ESPN, a player texted reporter Shelley Smith and wrote that the coach “showed up lit to meetings again today.”

So, he was drunk at a preseason function (claimed it was a couple of drinks mixed with a prescription med); assistant coaches report he was drunk during a game two weeks ago. I wonder how many other games/practices he was visibly loaded but folks covered up for him. I wonder what will happen to their jobs.

Florida QB Will Grier suspended for rest of season after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Florida's feel-good return to excellence story just blew a tire.

Sarkasian fired at USC. Interesting timing. I figured they would wait until after the season and give him a chance to seek treatment for the next month+ at least. I wonder if something else happened. (I also wonder if there's a potential lawsuit in the offing as I don't know the legality of firing someone because they have a substance-abuse issue. Though I'm well aware USC will argue that's not why he was fired.)

They've already seen two top 2016 recruits flip their commitments so I suspect that informed this more than just about anything, but I still don't see what they're going to do to stop that with a lame duck interim coach anyway. It also sends a message to the players who Sark recruited that presumably liked him that they don't give a shit about his issues, which I don't think is going to help them shore up a lot of those recruits anyway. Long story short, I don't get it.

How'd you sneak that past me, brian?

I was wildly speculating maybe Sark was resisting treatment, or threatening lawsuit or something, until I saw the news about the two recruits, which I also suspect was important in Haden's decision. Wonder how secure Haden's job as AD.

That's why I think there had/has to be something else going on perhaps. Maybe some of what you speculated. It's going to be open season on his recruits one way or another. There's not really much downside in letting him get help and firing him in mid-November even if you concluded today you wanted him out. That sends a message that at least you somewhat care about his well-being. This...not so much.

I love me some Steve Spurrier. This makes me sad. Though the fact he's super rich and can play golf 12 months a year now eases the sting a little.

Dan Wetzel posted some of his favorite Spurrier one-liners on Facebook. His line about playing Georgia early in the season is my favorite.

Crazy to have three college jobs open up in a four day span in the middle of the season.

As a Virginia fan who is hoping to hire a good coach after the season, it's disconcerting to see so many openings already. USC - the good one - will lead to a waterfall of openings. Illinois is already open as well. It's pretty likely that we'll see Miami too, by the end of the year. Gonna be a crazy coaching carousel this year.

* - I grew up on Bo's Michigan teams... Literally, in the shadows of that stadium. It's important to note, what we've seen so far isn't a return to the solid, but often slightly disappointing Lloyd Carr and Gary Moeller teams. We are seeing something a lot closer to those mid-70 to mid-80s teams, where a 9 win season was a disappoint and cause for serious reflection about the state of the program... and life in general.

* - I've read a lot over the last few days, and one thing that sticks out is that what Harbaugh is doing seems like it's a throwback and old school and all that... But it's actually really innovative and is presenting a ton of wrinkles that the average fan (me included) might not pick up on. All I really know is that I've been pretty miserable about the state of my team for the last 8 years... Even during "good" runs, things were so unstable and wonky. What's going on now is just different.

* - With the mid-season firings, you know it's really bad for all the reasons you guys mentioned. HOWEVER, in terms of recruiting... Once a coach is wounded, those high level recruits are gonna open up their process whether you officially fire the guy or not. Everyone on the planet knew that Hoke was gone after they lost to Rutgers last year. Any recruit that was a Hoke kid came into December fully aware he wasn't going to be there. They were either set on going Michigan regardless, or they decommitted in November and moved on.

Does no one else find it odd that Spurrier leaves in the middle of a season? Doesn't seem like a thing a long time, well respected coach would do. Is there another layer to this that no one is talking about?

I kind of wonder if the Illini just take the interim tag off Cubit. Obviously, we'll see how they play out the string, but that's a talented (if banged up) squad and the West is meh in a MEH conference.

I have two theories:

1 - He has something with his health going on.

2 - He wanted the new guy to get to start his career against Vanderbilt.

Or, team is 0-4 in the SEC and he couldn't face a tough game against Tennessee and three pretty much losses against top ten teams. People love Spurrier, so he's getting the benefit of the doubt. Hope it's not health related, and if it isn't, this is a weasel move.
