Things I find while walking thru my neighborhood

Post by bapo! »

Religious coins. Thought that they were silver dollars, but when I picked them up, I discovered that they had Bible verses stamped on them. Boooooo!

A condom. Right there on the sidewalk near a busy intersection. Presumably used. Didn't pick it up to investigate further.

Acorns, acorns, acorns!

Empty Stroh's cans. Didn't know that Stroh's was still a thing. Probably just a legacy brand at this point, right?

Two dead birds.

A 3.5-inch floppy disc. It was marked 'Manager Files.' Really wanted to read it, but I don't have a computer that could handle the advanced technology. So I gave it to a friend on her birthday.

(Also, I didn't find this, but I noticed that somebody a few blocks from here has two lava lamps on his/her windowsill. That place must be a madhouse once the sun goes down.)

People are presumably not drinking 20 year old cans of Stroh's and disposing of them in your neighborhood, I can assure you that.

(Yeah, Stroh's is made by the same company that makes PBR, Hamm's, Rainier and other classic regional brands.)

Would it make that much of a difference, really? It's Stroh's, after all.

While walking thru a wooded area last week, I found a pull-tab, the kind that hasn't been used in probably 30 years. This was only about a half-mile from the Stroh's depository. Impossible is nothing.

Does anyone else's kid love acorns? Q will look for the "really nice" ones and take one or two but leave the rest for the squirrels. Also got kinda mad at me once when she realized we drove over a bunch while parking.

Is there a tinkling piano soundtrack backing all of this?

Nah. I walk really fast, so I'm usually a sweaty mess by the time I reach my destination. If there's any musical accompaniment, it would probably be Molly Hatchet.

I happen to live in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the region. I also happen to be the one guy who is dragging down the average annual income.

When I was 8 years old, my sister asked for that album for her birthday (she was 5 years older than me). I had no idea who Molly Hatchet was, but I thought that name sounded pretty bad-ass. Then, when my mom took me to the record store to find the album, I remember being awestruck by that cover. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I vaguely remember my mom being slightly mortified that her daughter had asked for that. My sister was quite the rebellious rocker in her teen years.

We have a park at the end of our street that is a popular route for the local high school kids to walk for lunch breaks. The endless stream of chicken bones and Kroger popcorn chicken bags has turned my wife into the "kids get off my lawn" old lady I wasn't expecting to meet for another 20 years or so.

The plus side is my dogs love going for walks in that direction now.

Saw a CD lying on the sidewalk last night. I picked it up to investigate because it might have been a good album, or important financial records, or porn, or something. Then I read the Sharpie scrawl: PIT BULL. Fuck. Yes.

A couple of months ago, I found two Monopoly dollars on the same day, about a mile apart.

I found a cashed/canceled check for 60 bucks to a local church while playing disc golf this week.

The neat part was it was written in 1996 and issue by a bank that hasn't existed in 15 years.

My kids must've been on the prowl in Boulder and Pittsburgh. They LOVE their nerf guns, and losing the darts.

We had a solid period in our office where we were armed to the teeth with nerf guns and skirmishes broke out at any time. Then of course someone took one in the eye and that was the end of that. (Although I still keep my single-shooter in my desk drawer just in case.)

I saw about a 1/2 dozen of these scattered near an intersection while running this morning. I grabbed two that ended up on the grass at the side of the road, hoping they would be in the best shape, stuck them on my pinky and took them home.

The first wouldn't play in the drive on our laptop at all, but the second loaded. Unfortunately, DJ Jess burned the CD without song titles, so had to listen to see what was on there. I was disappointed to find a relatively standard set of current pop songs and gave up after only 3 tracks:

1. Drake - Passionfruit
2. DJ Khaled, Jay-Z, Beyonce - Shining
3. Bruno Mars - 24K Magic

I hope DJ Jess already got what he/she needed out of these, and that the party vacation went OK, and the discs dumped on the side of the road represented nothing worse than a disregard for local littering statutes.

Today I found a few people burning bread crumbs and other remnants of food that is not Kosher for Passover.

Very orthodox Jews make good neighbours, but sometimes, they are just a bit medieval for my liking.
