So every once in a while we talk Rugby on the Frog. I am fascinated by sevens, NBC is throwing $ behind it, and it will be in the Olympics. So I had a link to share and figured it was a good excuse to start a thread.
So the US Rugby Hall of Fame just announced its class of 2013. And I actually know one of the guys being inducted. Rob Bordley is head coach of the Landon lacrosse team (22 consecutive championships at one point) and I have officiated a bunch of their games over the years. Watching the "State Of Origin". Huge Rugby rivalary...3 game series between Queensland ("The Cane Toads") and New South Wales ("The Cockroaches").
I've gotten to where I can follow Aussie Rules ok....but Rugby is still beyond me.

I was watching the Australia vs British&Irish Lions, and I have no clue at all what the rules are of Rugby. Once I thought I had something figured out, something would happen and I'd think "Wait...what?".
That said....good game (I think)...guys beating the hell out of each other. The Wallabies scored with 3 minutes left or so to take the lead, but the Lions had a kick right at the end that would have won it, but the guy (Leigh Halfpenny...now there's a solid British name) left it a couple of yards short.

I went to a pub tonight with some sailing friends to watch the 3rd game of the Aussie vs British&Irish Lions series. Good times...the place was packed...like SuperBowl kind of crowd.
Absolutely no idea what was going on, but the Lions pretty much dominated. But I did get to hear a very spirited "Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi" chant...

Tonight was the 3rd game of the "State Of Origin" series. I was totally confused by the action...until I figured out it was "Rugby Union", not "Rugby League" (the pro-Labour Union ad's were a sure sign).
The highlight? The fat naked drunken streaker who ran onto the pitch right in the middle of the action in the closing minutes.

This is pretty amazing because (A) I had no idea the US had advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rugby League World Cup (beating Wales along the way), (B) wlu_lax hasn't commented on the tournament (I suppose that could be combined with (A)) and (C) I didn't know that 3/4 of the original Wiggles were gone!
I'm assuming that's some sort of jinx, since Australia is up next for the US, on Saturday.

Heard about this on last week's Hang Up and Listen. A few things
1.) Calling this team a "U.S. team" is like calling the Irish National Lacrosse team, "Irish" (They are all from Boston and Long Island). I think only 8 folks are actually Americans.
2.) We beat the Welsh!!!!!!
3.) This is not Rugby Union but that strange 4 down, way less popular version of Rugby.
4.) This is the same version that Russell Crowe owns a pro team in Australia (very cool short TV series on his takeover of the South Sydney Rabbitohs as the team was Member Owned before he bought it).
5.) The US has infighting. Two leagues and only one league is eligible for participation in the national team.

Huge game this weekend for the US. Second leg of the Home-and-Home for a spot in the Rugby World Cup. USA v. Uruguay. USA was away in leg one and then host Saturday at Kennesaw State University (Yard of Junk....you going?).

Sevens rugby is a rugby union game, played on a full size pitch with 7 players/team over 2 seven minutes halves. It is played by national teams in a world wide circuit (Hong Kong 7's etc...), has its own world cup (every 4 years) and is part of the Olympics - It is often used as a bridge for young union players, who could go on play international rugby union (15 man game) in the future, although there are many players who spend their whole careers on the 7's circuit.
Rugby union is played on a full size pitch with 15 players/team over 2 forty minute halves (Competitions include: Rugby would cup - every 4 years, The lions tour - every 4 years, 6 Nations championships - Annual, The Championship - Annual and various club competitions). This is the one that Zumba and I will refer to.
Rugby league is played on a full size pitch with 13 players/team over 2 forty minute halves. Rugby league was a break away sport (1895 onward) which paid players to play, while the union code remained amateur until 1995 (although players were 'helped' by the clubs and international unions for at least 20 years prior to 1995).

7s is going to be in the Olympics. US took 2nd in their group in Hong Kong this weekend.
The 15s beat Uruguay to qualify for the World Cup (overcame a 10 point deficit).
And the fastest man in Rugby (but not good enough for the Detroit Lions) got his first start in pro rugby for the warriors.
We can keep tabs on it all.

NBC must hate the US Eagles because setting up the match today at Chicago was not want I would have done to highlight our team/sport. Hi here are the World Champs who are going to blow out the home team for the one time the US is on national TV. Glad to see it but the US is just outclassed.
Proud of the sellout at Soldier field and glad to see 15s on TV in the run up to the World Cup..but still not sure the best game to highlight a great sport.
I suppose you can rupture the spleen, or less likely a kidney, and bleed to death internally in less than an hour, w/o prompt medical attention (meaning surgery.) Just a guess. Terrible.

The end of the Canada-Italy game was like slow, grinding misery. Horrible to watch.
Do you think there is too much league influence in their coaching?
League as in the English board or rugby league ?
1.Not sure about coaching, but regarding the selection, preventing Armitage and Abendanon (only the European rugby player of the year !!) from being picked just because they play abroad is quite damaging (even if I get the economic reason), Cipriani may have paid for his off-field antics and as D'arcy wrote, Burgess was a bit too green.
But however pleased I am by all this, people are a bit too negative. The pool draw sucked and as usual, everyone freaks out about a choice being wrong in hindsight. Who's to say Farell would have scored the penalty from far right, and everyone cheered when the Japanese punted on the penalty to go for the try against SA the week before. It wasn't that bad a choice, but the execution sucked.
2. I wouldn't know. It's a really minor sport here. I live in Toulouse who won the last two finals but I bet less than 1% of people in the city know it.

Apparently Lomu suffered from serious kidney problems for a long time, and his death is believed to be related to that.

That is very impressive and an honor to be respected like that. If you have to have a funeral that is a pretty good tradition. I find New Orleans Second Lines/Jazz Funeral another meaningful tribute.
Haka's done by non-New Zealanders (i.e. some high school team in Northern VA before a game or U of HI football) are just cheap knockoffs.
