I voted plain bagel with scallion cream cheese, but I'd get chive cream cheese instead.

Interchangeable. I'll amend the poll.

Why the hell would anyone get plain? If you don't like seeds, garlic or onion, at least get rye, or black russian or even wheat. The correct answer is everything or rye with lox spread. Or cinnamon raisin from time to time.

As a Jersey resident, you need to adapt to the classic Taylor ham, egg and cheese. I refuse to add ketchup or salt, but pepper is good.

Ham on a bagel is just wrong.

I'll take a hot crusty bagel with poppy seeds with butter.

Although peanut butter with banana is also a classic.

Lox and tomato also a winner.

Just finished a tasty onion bagel, lightly toasted with cream cheese. Yum. So, I voted onion. But, truth be told, I like any and all kinds of bagels, except the cheese ones. I like cheese in general, but not in a bagel (except for the cream cheese you spread on top).

It was one of my mother's few good recipes.

In Toronto, there's a debate between those who like the bigger crustier bagels (I presume these would be called "New York style" south of the border, and the lighter, thinner Montreal style bagel.

I'll take the big bagels any day of the week.

There's a place in NYC (Black Seed) that gets a ton of hype (and counter hype) that does a NYC/Montreal hybrid. Haven't gotten to check it out yet, but my only experience w/ "real" Montreal style (somewhere just outside Burlington, VT) was legit. The worst, absolute worst, are the bad NYC ones that are big and soft on the outside. Just killers.

Because I don't feel like using Google, does putting poutine on it make it a Montreal bagel?

Someone (Rush) correct me, but they're smaller and crispier and seedier. And maybe use honey?

We call those "goyische bagels"for obvious reasons.

My sister in DC swears she can't find a good bagel in the entire city. I find that strange considering Jews run the government.

Everything > Onion

Also, it pisses me off when I bring in nice fresh (still warm) bagels and people insist on toasting them anyway.

misterd - this place has Montreal style bagels

I have a number of co-workers from that area, so we have them a couple of times a year at meetings. They're my only reference, but they're pretty good.

Montreal knows their smoked meat, their hockey, and their bagels.

I recently read a history of the Jewish deli in America and there was mention of bagels being imported from Montreal.

Totes. Although I'll ask "should I?" a lot.
Fuck. I'd heard of it but never bothered to make the trek before.

Feel free to mock me...but I love a good salt bagel. With cream cheese.

My friend in Chicago who now runs the pizza/brewery used to have a chain of 5 bagel places. He taught me that the real secret to making bagels is that you have to do the full dunk in boiling water to get the good crunchy skin. Most places cut corners by just spraying hot water on them.

I voted the plain with chive, but I'd actually choose a poppy or sesame seed with plain cream cheese, normally. Although if it's a true breakfast option, lots of times I'll go with the cinnamon raisin with plain cream cheese. Great stuff.

I went with the second option since it's the closest to my preference (plain with plain, sorry). At the most I'll have a sesame seed or onion one to mix it up, but beyond that, yeah, save your fancy styles for other shit.

I'm also in the camp that you should never toast a bagel (or 90% of bread products for that matter).

Truth.

I prefer plain or salt homemade bagels. I'll settle for a good cinnamon raisin if I'm buying one.

Toasted rye bread is a gift from both the Gods of baking and the lords of fire.

A good bagel that's more than 12 hours old or so has already past its peak. It needs toasting.

Things you should toast:

1. toast
2. english muffins
3. bread for a sandwich that specifically requires it (club, patty melt, etc.)

That's it. A decade or so ago sandwich shops decided toasted bread is inherently better, and now everything that should be on soft bread tastes like it's between two sheets of particle board. Our society needs some serious toast push-back.

You sister is actually right. There is only one place with a good bagels that I have found. Brooklyn Bagels in Courthouse (Arlington)--right across from a solid soccer/rugby bar (Summers).

There might be another exception in there, but I'm with JC. Paninis are just a way of selling you bad and/or old bread.

I like paninis. I like toast. I like sandwiches on toasted bread. Sometimes I don't toast a bagel, but any bagel (or bread) that isn't fresh is improved by toasting.

Black Russian, cream cheese, lox, tomato, slice of Swiss. Second choice would be an onion bagel.

Cinnamon Raisin is disgusting. Eaten by children and goyim.

Toast any non fresh bagel. If you toast a fresh bagel in my presence, I will kick you in the leg.

I love you man!

My great grandfather and my wife's grandfather were bakers. As a result of this (and due to the happy fact that we are surrounded by fine bakeries), the following two items have never been in our bread drawer:

1) White Bread

2) Cinnamon Raisin bagels. That's the sort of thing they'd serve at McDonalds.

I can't recall every agreeing with you more on anything ever.
