The song covered today in the Stereogum 'The Number One's' column is Paula Abdul's 'Rush Rush'.

The video is a knock-off of 'Rebel Without A Cause' (starring Keanu Reeves!), complete with scenes at Griffith Observatory.

I misunderstood your post at first and thought that you were saying there was an actual film remake of Rebel Without a Cause that starred Keanu and Paula. Gawd, that would have been a train wreck.

The Mountain West championship game is in Carson, CA which is apparently close enough to show the observatory in a “hey, we’re near LA!” montage.

Really should just show LAX and... that probably covers it for that part of town.

It’s about 20 miles away. But of course, “LA” is really just a hundred different suburbs jammed together, anyway.

Similarly, I get a kick out of tv always showing the Golden Gate Bridge when the 49ers play, even though it’s 47 miles away.

I didn't watch much of the pregame, though I was sure they'd show it at some point (if it was during the game I missed it). I did catch a segment with Dale Jr and that other racing dude at Mann's Chinese Theatre which seemed to be part of a tour around LA and wondered if they were going to head to the observatory or not.

I saw the obligatory Observatory scene when they came back from commercial early in the game.

(Also sorta want to watch that on a Swamp movie night so DSG can tell us how good a job they did with the LA geography, both in terms of whether where they went and how they got there made sense and if the sun shining in their faces early in the chase was consistently coming from the correct direction)

This sounds like the only set of conditions under which I would watch the movie (I would do this). That said, my guess off the top is that the answer "no" would be selected a lot for the LA geography quiz. Old LA-centric blogs used to do this for every movie. I think the oldest movie I ever saw a blog post for that mapped out the LA locations was "Falling Down". (That would also be an interesting Swamp Movie Night choice, especially since I've seen it referred to recently on twitter and our current political climate.)

Also, great job spotting it in the background.

Wife and youngest went there today but I guess I wasn’t open enough about my obsessions and all I got was a photo of the observatory and not one with them in it. Did get like a dozen picture of them with the HW sign in the background.
