Re: Movies
My kid wanted to watch "Grease" last night...
That movie is so awful. I can't believe that it was so popular back when I was a kid. I remember seeing it in the theater! A few thoughts:
1-None of them look remotely like high schoolers. Stockard Channing was 35 when it was filmed!
2-The main group of characters were pretty much the bullies of the school. Wouldn't fly these days.
3-And I may be alone in this....but I thought Olivia Newton-John looked way better when she was sweet and innocent, rather then when she was "tramped up"

Yep. But the Frankie Valli theme song is great (at least there was one good song.)DaveInSeattle wrote:That movie is so awful.
Of course. Unless you consider "Let's Get Physical" Olivia 'tramped up'.3-And I may be alone in this....but I thought Olivia Newton-John looked way better when she was sweet and innocent, rather then when she was "tramped up"

Just watched Kingpin again.
And parts of it are dull after many viewings, but man, some scenes still make me laugh.
And finally, Big Ern is above the law.

Re: Movies
Watched Dick Tracy and Citizen Kane over the last week or so.
The nostalgia I had for Dick Tracy made me want to watch it again. And holy shit does it suck. How can a cast like that just fail miserably in a movie?
As for Citizen Kane, I had always heard it was the greatest movie of all time so I wanted to see it. It didn't disappoint, obviously. But watching old movies is tough. You're so used to seeing technology and, well, colorization, in movies these days that you forget the story is the most important part back then.
(But the scene where he says the news is 24 hours a day, that was ahead of its time by a whole fucking lot. William Randolph Hearst must have been one gigantic asshole too.)

I watcehd three movies over the memorial day weekend. Well, really all within the last 24 hours of memorial day.
Star Trek Into Darkness was normal Star Trekky-Fun.
Ted was better than I was expecting. Had really low expectations. I didn't hate it.
Amazing Spider Man 2 was meh.

That's a great movie. My Intro to Theatre professor was the grandma in it. That same class had Ty Burrell for a GA.Pruitt wrote:Just watched Kingpin again.

I really liked Star Trek Into Darkness. I thought it was neat how they kind of flipped the WoK story on it's head. Also, that Alice Eve is not too hard on the eyes. They did just a phenomenal job casting the new alt universe in my mind. Quinto is a great Spock, Cho brings something very unique to Sulu, I can't get enough of anything Simon Pegg does, and Bones has probably been on of my top 5 favorite Trek characters over any iteration of the series.

Probably the whiskey, but I enjoyed it, too. Despite a poor review from cerrano, glad I gave it a chance. Though if you're going to have a quidditch scene, get it right. Watched "her" over the weekend. Liked it a lot. Very bizarre, but in a good way.

It took until the last gag, but I fucking laughed. Heartily. I hope that wasn't the only funny bit in the movie.

I really wanted to see it, and the clips look great, but several Knoxville fans said it was horrendous.

Evidently Boulder IS a different country. Youtube won't allow me to view that trailer as I'm not in the correct region.

Re: Movies
I can go see one of the following this afternoon. Anyone have a recommendation of one over the others?
Godzilla
X-Men DoFP
Edge of Tomorrow
I think I'm sort of leaning X-Men even though I never got around to see First Class (or any of the various Wolverine flicks).

I saw the big guy. Pretty good. The reviews I read we're pretty accurate. There was a lot of time spent with the people characters, and a lot of time spent teasing monster fights before they were finally unleashed.

I've seen EoT. Liked it, B/B+ stuff. Didn't know anything about the plot beforehand, so was pleasantly surprised by the twist. Save for the first 20min, Cruise does generic Cruise stuff, so YMMV about that. 3D was meh, mostly because the monsters move too freaking fast to really focus.rass wrote:I can go see one of the following this afternoon. I almost went with it, but in the time slot I was looking at I would have had to have gone with a 3D showing and just didn't want to. There was a trailer for it during Godzilla that almost made me regret my decision. That French Guy wrote:I've seen EoT. Liked it, B/B+ stuff. Just watched it last night - good fun pretty much all the way through (except the last few minutes which while not that bad, kind of brought things to a screeching halt)DaveInSeattle wrote:Really enjoyed The Lego Movie. Batman had some great lines.
And my girlfriend figured out what the "Piece of Resistance" was way quicker then I did.
And my wife also got the "piece of resistance" immediately, whereas I had no clue.
Also watched the romantic comedy "Girl On A Bicycle" that I recorded as it seemed like an innocuous bit of fluff that we could enjoy as a couple.
If you have the chance to see it, don't. Very little in this world is as ultimately irritating as watching an English film where the three main characters are French, Italian and German and are clearly reading their lines phonetically.
So bad that our romantic evening ended with my wife asleep and me reading a book about World War 2.

Not a movie but close to it: I took BSFGF to see The Book of Mormon last night. Just fantastic. I guess there was a reason the tickets were so outrageous. Absolutely brilliant and such talented performers. Tough to think of ways to improve on that show.

Really interesting, and even though I've been reading about and watching shows and movies about WW2 since I was a kid, All Hell Let Loose is full of details that are incredible. I am learning a hell of a lot about the war.

Re: Movies
My wife got passes to see "A Hundred Foot Journey" last night. Her company puts on a swanky event - the film is about Indian and French cuisine, so the catering nicely reflected this. The film was screened in one of Toronto's nicest theatres (one built for the Film Festival - high back comfortable chairs, huge screen).
Too bad the movie was such a piece of garbage. All surface, and some of the worst acting imaginable. A couple of times one of the two leads performed an action that was critical to understanding their character and that would drive the story forward... and it was impossible to be sure what was going on.
Dreck. Nicely made dreck, but dreck nonetheless.
