Crash did stink

30's: 1 (GWTW)
40's: 6
50's: 7
60's: 9 (never saw Tom Jones)

hard to pick a fave out of them, because my alltime favorite may be Dr Strangelove
of the ones with the Oscar it would either be Casablance, All about Eve or Godfather I

It’s probably safe to say none of us saw either of the two from the 20s.

And if you haven’t seen Casablanca, take the 94 minutes and watch it, and keep reminding yourself this was filmed and released in 1943.

Thirded the Yes on Casablanca. As mentioned, it's not that long, and well-paced for a movie of its time.

You'll also see where the Indiana Jones map thing came from.

Absolutely. Perfect film.

Some of the old classics are so great - even 60-80 years later.

Off the top of my head, I'd put Casablanca, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Gone With The Wind, High Noon, Citizen Kane in that category, films that are part of the pantheon that are fantastic. i know there are many more.

Conversely, some old movies just don't stand the test of time. Not long ago, I watched The Maltese Falcon, and while it is filled with classic actors and famous lines, it looks cheap. Like it was shot on 4 sets in a few weeks or something.

I've seen and really liked both High Noon and Citizen Kane. Wait, where was Citizen Kane on that list? Ha! It lost to How Green Was My Valley.

BTW, I'd say that of the Best Pictures I've seen, I probably like The Last Emperor the least. That said, I've liked them all, even The English Patient, Titanic and Dances With Wolves.

Don’t want to start a fight but why didn’t you like The Last Emperor? Legit question so have at it with both barrels because I won’t fire back. (This is related to a different conversation I’m having with someone about that movie.)

My least favourites would be The Silence of the Lambs, Forrest Gump, Ordinary People and The Hurt Locker. With each movie, there are circumstances of viewing that impact how I feel. For instance, I thought that The English Patient was boring as hell, but it was like the 4th or 5th date with the woman who became my wife. She was smoking hot, and I knew that there would be sex later, so the movie wasn't so bad. Quiz me on it, and all I can remember was a burned English guy and maybe a biplane flight over the desert.

I love old movies, and Casablanca is my all-time favorite movie. Such great dialogue and perfectly cast, right down the line with all the character actors. In addition to Bogart and Bergman, you've got Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Paul Henreid, Sydney Greenstreet, Conrad Veitch...

A year ago, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra showed the movie on a huge screen at the symphony hall, with the orchestra playing all the music along with the movie. Sublime.

Tom Jones is good, by the way. It's an adaptation of an old-timey book, but it some uses modern (for the time) cinematic techniques, like breaking the fourth wall.

I didn't not like it. I did like it, just probably the least of the ones I've seen. I haven't seen any Best Pictures that I didn't think were good. It's been a long time since I saw The Last Emperor, so my memory is a bit fuzzy about it. It's possible that The Hurt Locker would be a reasonable choice for "least-good" for me as well.

This is a fun way to see how uncultured I am:

20's: 0
30's: 0, but I've seen parts of Gone with the Wind and Mutiny
40's: 1, Casablanca.
50's: 3 or 4 (not sure if I watched Bridge on the River Kwai, or just part of it
60's: 4
70's: 7
80's: 4
90's: 10!!!!
2000's: 6
2010's: 0

I've seen 4 out of the 71 nominees from the 2010's, and 3 were 2013, one from 2014. With all of the amazing streaming shows on Netflix and Amazon, and old HBO shows I missed, I never think to watch movies.

I went into this thinking I'd try to see some of the winners I missed, but I really don't have much interest in any of the 20th Century winners I missed. A few from this century I'd like to see, but with The Wire and Bojack Horseman and the like in my queue, I don't know if I will ever get to them.

In 1999 or 2000 they had a touring film festival that was showing all the AFI top 100 for the 20th century. When it hit ABQ I made sure I hit up the Bogey films (plus Bugs Bunny) so great on a big screen.

That's cool. I think I like it because it's the kind of movie that doesn't really get made any more. Those sweeping, David Lean-style epics with thousands of extras and elaborate sets and great storytelling.

I have some criticisms of the movie to be sure, mostly related to more or less glossing over Pu YI's decade as puppet ruler of Manchuko while the Japanese were committing atrocities against its people, but the movie is already 3 hours and 40 minutes so guess something had to be cut.

Speaking of which how many of the AFI list have all y'all seen?

46 for me.

Most glaring "miss." Schindler's List. Just can't bring myself to watch it. Too sad a subject and I dwell on things.

I felt the same way about that movie as you did, but an ex made me watch it and I was very appreciative I did. It's an amazing movie.

I went through the AFI list and counted 62, which is more than I would have guessed. Reminded me of some glaring omissions, though, which I ought to catch up on.

Apparently they re-did the list in 2007. I was counting from a compendium of both.

86 of those 100.

Bogart was great

another was director Billy Wilder. He had a not often mentioned gem The Fortune Cookie with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. I loved Matthau. Wilder had some incredible films.

Billy Wilder won Oscars as writer, director and producer. (61 in total, plus an honorary one) And he wrote grim dramas, silly comedies,, romances, black comedies, courtroom dramas and even a movie involving the Cleveland Browns!

Even if he were still alive, would be a tough fit for a movie set in the 1960s.

Ah... didn't read the link, thought it was closer to era of the beginning of the show.

Prequels are tricky, but fun. I love Better Call Saul, but Mike Ermentraut is looking really old now, for a prequel.
