Knew the guy was a scammer, but my god - 6 years in jail seems about right.

I watched the Netflix one today and the Hulu one was better just because it was edited to be funnier but the Netflix one is good too.
Watched the Netflix one this weekend. I couldn't stop laughing at all these socialite assholes.
But my biggest laugh was when the logistics guy was like "We need to worry about toilets..." and no one seemed to care. I would've noped out right there before they asked me to continue.
You want a baller party vacation including islands and all the other wild shit? The Yacht Week exists and it's fucking incredible.
It's pretty fucked up that the Fuck Jerry guys apparently played a very large role in the Netflix version. It is absolutely unbelievable that a firm that is built around social media monitoring and marketing didn't know very early on that this was a shitshow in the making. I'm actually really surprised Netflix thought it was OK to use them in such a way.
I'm still gonna find time to watch it, just to see how they spin it. But there's a former FJ staffer that is on the Hulu version and unless he kept ALL of the shit he spilled on that doc to himself, the FJ guys knew 99 percent this was going to be a tire fire.

Your spoiler comment was my main beef with the Netflix one though I still thought it was well done overall.
The fact that Billy McFarland was pulling another scam while out on bail is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. And he had a guy film all of it too!!
That's why I clicked on the first article I saw. Thought they were revisiting the older movie.
This was gold:

Just watched UHF with my 12 year old son. That movie holds up. The only part that does not...the concept of UHF v. VHF.

Speaking of old stuff, last night my wife and I attended the first night of the annual San Francisco Film Noir Festival. Saw a couple old films - one from 1949 and one from 1950. Great fun. Link

First man was kind of a mess.
I mean. I can’t decide if Ryan gosling is a good actor at this point. He is always the same charachter.

Confession!
I had never seen Close Encounters. Took care of that last weekend. What a great movie. I read so many complaints about how CGI is ruining modern movies, but there was (and I’m borrowing someone else’s phrase) an economy of storytelling that I think so many films are missing these days. Even before the push for “cinematic universes”. There was so much trust for the viewer in CE, and so little stopping and explaining exactly what is happening and why. So good.
Last night I introduced the kids to Raiders of the Lost Ark. They were really into it, but the “Truck. What truck?” chase is one of my favorite scenes of all time and I might have talked it up too much. They kept waiting for more to happen.
After they were to bed I watched Polar on Netflix. If you like Mads and gratuitous violence and nudity I highly recommend it. It was fun. The MVPs were
Mads’ thrusting ass and a Richard Dreyfuss cameo!!!!

The posts I pasted below are from a couple years ago in the Punchable Faces Thread. There’s still plenty of room available for you to join us on the “Gosling can’t act” bandwagon.
(I have no good reason for disliking him. But he sure looks like a smug douchebag.)
Yup. Cosign.
I thought his acting was the most underwhelming part of La La Land. I also saw parts of an SNL episode Gosling hosted a couple years back and didn't find him to be particularly funny or charismatic. If I had seen him in either of those, without already knowing that he was supposed to be this huge star and sex symbol, I'd wonder how he ever got cast in those roles.
The Notebook. He's living off the residuals for life.
So glad he died at the end. Spoiler alert.

I really liked First Man. I think I'm alone on the island though.

As far as I’m concerned he’s going to get credit for life from The Nice Guys.

This weekend, Mrs. Sabo and I saw They Shall Not Grow Old, a documentary about World War I. It's easily the best documentary I've ever seen. It was directed by Peter Jackson and was commissioned by the British Imperial War Museum, and all of the movie was based on archival footage and oral histories of World War I veterans. They colorized a lot of the archival footage for the movie, but it didn't look fake like a lot of colorized movies.
After the movie, there was a 30-minute long feature about the technical challenges the film makers had to overcome with the archival footage. Some of the footage wasn't the original but had been duped up to three or four times, and each dupe resulted in a lesser quality. Some of the archival film had shrunk or the darkened over time, so they had to work with exposures to get it look right. Some of the before and after examples were shocking. Frame rates for the footage varied greatly too because the film was advanced during recording by hand, so they had to work with the timing to make everything look smooth.
The level of detail the filmmakers went through to make everything authentic was pretty astounding. Jackson said he spent three days in Belgium by himself and took thousands of pictures of the countryside and battlefield just so they could get the color of grass correct. They bought authentic uniforms worn by British and German soldiers just so they could match colors correctly. They acquired some authentic World War I artillery pieces and recorded people opening the breech block, loading in a shell and such so they could get the audio as accurate as possible.
The filmmakers even hired forensic lip readers to help determine what the troops were saying. One scene had an officer reading some orders to his troops, but the lip readers couldn't figure out what he said. They determined the division the troops were in and determined the date the film was shot, and then went to that division's archives to look for any orders on that date. They eventually found a card that in essence was a pep talk for the troops before they went into action. Jackson recorded himself reading the card, and they then synced his recording with the footage and determined that it was almost certainly what the officer was reading. Finally, they hired a voice actor to read the card at different speeds and used that recording in the movie.
If you have an opportunity to see this movie, I can't recommend it enough. It's quite remarkable.
Saw Spider-Verse yesterday and was absolutely blown away. Just visually the movie was incredible and seems like a game-changer.
As in, I'd be cool if comic book-based movies went this direction for the foreseeable future. I know that's unrealistic, but it was just so fucking cool to see how they gave so many touches that made it really feel like a comic book or graphic novel come to life.
But, then the story and voice acting on so many fronts was just higher level. I'm still kind of reeling from just HOW MUCH they wedged into the movie, but that it never felt overwhelming and so many of the characters felt fleshed out and tangible.
Can't wait for whatever comes next. And I haven't said that very much about all this comic book stuff. I've liked a lot of them, but I have to say it's nice watching one of these where the stakes (blowing up the Earth/Universe) didn't seem to be the dominant driver of the plot.

"A Night At The Garden"
Only 7 minutes long but it will make your blood chill and then boil.
(Nominated for an Academy Award for documentary short)
Incredible. I didn't really know what I was watching. It was only after, reading the website, that I realized that it was a real rally and that was all actual footage.

America does a great job of whitewashing it’s inconvenient history. It’s just easier to teach kids that everyone was a hero in World War II
