That seems apocryphal. Anyone who at this day and age (I'm assuming this was in Hollywood) would be discussing MIB would probably know either 1) that it was a comic book or 2) that dude wrote the screenplay for the movie.

I dunno. Seems pretty plausible to me. Even sitting in a cafe in LA I doubt I'd assume the older guy sitting next to me just happened to be the guy who wrote Men In Black.

Hold up. You know screenwriters by their face? That's...amazing.

I don't sit around talking about the origins of MIB 25 years later.

Oh so now I'm supposed to believe the screenwriter of some of the greatest cinematic feats can't make stuff up?!?!?!

Watching Friday the 13th part 2. Gawd what a terrible movie. Fuck the whole thing is filmed in daylight.

Also went to see Joker. Didn’t care for first 30 minutes but last 30 minutes made up for it. Phoenix carries a movie as much as any actor in a bit.

I would have watched it anyway but doctor sleep featuring Rebecca Ferguson just makes it that much better.

I don’t think I had seen Taxi Driver all the way through. But I watched it today. I definitely get the reasons people said Joker pulled from it. Like a lot. Now I guess I need to see the king of comedy.

Oh, you absolutely do. Probably Scorsese's most underrated movie.

I saw that movie once when I was 14 or 15.

I almost puked at the end I was so tense. A great movie, and one that I don;t think I'll ever watch again.

The Farewell is excellent.

Very touching, very entertaining. And if you want the full story before watching it...

Bailey broke bad. Maybe if it does well, we'll get a sequel with a Swamp (or at least a Swamper) reference.

After feigning(?) no interest in the film from when it was announced up until a couple of weeks ago, the girls were excited to see Frozen II over the weekend. We even took a friend of the oldest with us! I sincerely enjoyed seeing it in a theater full of kids. Their reactions when Anna and Elsa first showed up, and to just about anything Olaf did, were adorable and probably kept the latter character from wearing out his welcome with me.

I thought it was great. Olaf was hilarious. The wife and I both legitimately cried from laughing at the "Samantha" joke. And whether or not they meant it to be, the 80s power ballad song was funny too.

Fair enough. I did LOL at the Samantha joke.

And absolutely on the Kristof song.

My daughter just got back from DU and is trying to sort out her wacky sleep schedule. She fell asleep at 6pm last night, was up at dawn.

Once she gets her shit straight we are gonna watch our DVD of Frozen. THEN we get to go see the movie in the theater. I'm pumped.

There's only one question, does my favorite character reprise his appearance?

I went to the Home Depot by the theatre Saturday. Saw approximately 145 little girls in princess dresses. My daughter is going today, wore her princess dress to school.

My baby daughter is 20, so not taking her to see it... but I will eventually.

People rag on Disney for many reasons (most of which are valid), but Disney and Pixar make absolutely outstanding movies.Hipsters may sneer, but movies like "Frozen," or "Coco" are so much better than 90% of movies aimed at an adult audience.

He's there, but no speaking role. Gotta keep the cost down. My oldest daughter (14) leaned over to me and said "Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good." If you have seen it you know what part.

And my wife and her were snorting with laughter at the power ballad montage.

Saw the Academy Award nominated documentary about one of James Baldwin's unfinished books (I Am Not Your Negro) yesterday and it was really, really good. Certainly relevant to our current times.

I thought I commented on it here, but Parasite was outstanding. One of the better movies I've seen in a long time, but that's not saying much because I haven't been watching nearly as many movies over the past decade or so. But it did what Pulp Fiction did for me in 1995 and sparked a huge interest in film again. Perfect timing with all the end of year/decade lists out there.

Excited about Knives Out tonight.

The Irishman dropped today on Netflix. In a related story:

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is one of the most touching and thoughtful movies I've ever seen. It's worthy of all the plaudits it is getting, and Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys absolutely kill their roles, and Chris Cooper is his usual awesome self.

I also liked how the movie showed all of the TV scenes in 4:3 ratio but all other scenes were in the 16:9 ratio. At first, I thought the aspect ratio changes would be annoying or confusing but instead it helped appreciate the story takes place almost 20 years ago. If you go, stick around for the credits, as there's some interesting footage of the movie crew making adjustments to the miniature model towns used in the film.

Two thumbs up.

The Irishman would have been better with Bojack in it. I thought it was interesting, but it wasn't compelling enough to make me watch the 3 hours and 30 minutes in one sitting.

For years now, my daughter and I have watched Madea movies together.

We watched "Madea's Family Funeral" last night and it is Tyler Perry at his best - which means it is appalling, sloppily made and incoherent from start to finish. We absolutely loved it.

If you enjoy bad, bad, bad movies, you have to watch Tyler Perry at work.

And if you've never seen one of his movies, you should watch 15 minutes or so - you've never seen anything like it.

Madea's Big Happy Family has all the elements of what makes a Tyler Perry film such a unique experience.

The Kid Who Would Be King billed itself as an 80s-style kid’s action/adventure flick and I think it hit that mark pretty well. Fun.

While the kids watched that one with us and enjoyed it, they skipped out on Noelle (Disney+) because they had already watched it while we were traveling for the holiday.

A couple points on that one:

1) It definitively establishes that Santa fucks

2) I felt like they sunk a fortune into the casting and the North Pole set and then realized the entire endeavor just didn’t have “it”, set it for a streaming release and slashed the budget. Some of the “outdoor” shots and settings in the other main locale are so awful. Also, the brand placement was incredibly over the top. A decent chunk of the story takes place at a mall, and almost every shot included a store marquee, someone holding a shopping bag and/or a store employee in a branded shirt.
