I took my daughter to see her in concert a few years ago. She was all tarted up, but I just found it kind-of sad. Still, I will admit that her music has been pretty good and it was a good concert.

Then you start to get into all kinds of internal and societal issues with how gymnasts are sexualized from a very young age to begin with and it's a mystery to me how any elite gymnasts can ever have a healthy relationship later in life.

The crazy thing is that I never really noticed her - women's gymnastics is not something I watch - until the clip of her ripping into the gymnastics federation in the court that day. So am I less horrible if I can honestly say that her eloquence and passion really made me take notice?

(Yes, young enough to be my daughter... I'm off to look at pictures of Salma Hayek and other middle-aged women.)

Amazingly, I've never seen any of those. I've seen scenes, of course, but no whole Bogart movies. (I read The African Queen in high school.)

47. Utah - California Gull. Tip: For your state bird, don't pick a bird whose name references another state.

46. Hawaii - Nēnē. You'd think Hawaii would have some cool colorful tropical bird, but no, it's just some dumb regular goose with a few stripes. Huge disappointment.

45. Arkansas/Florida/Mississippi/Tennessee/Texas - Northern Mockingbird. Don't see what's so special about this one that made half the Confederacy adopt it as a state symbol. Also, it has "Northern" in the name. How do you miss that?

40. Arizona - Cactus Wren. OK bird, but fuck Arizona.

39. Maine/Massachusetts - Black-Capped Chickadee. "Hey, you know the goldfinch? Let's pick that bird, but without the color."

37. Pennsylvania - Ruffed Grouse. Meh.

36. Colorado - Lark Bunting. Meh. Also, "Lark Bunting" is the name of every 20-year-old girl from Colorado.

35. Alaska - Willow Ptarmigan. Meh.

34. Rhode Island - Rhode Island Red. Sounds like a bigger deal than it is. Doesn't look much different than a regular-ass chicken to me.

33. Illinois/Indiana/Kentucky/North Carolina/Ohio/Virginia/West Virginia - Northern Cardinal. I don't hate Cardinals (the bird) as much as some of you, but loses points for so many states picking it.

26. Iowa/New Jersey/Washington - American Goldfinch. Odd combination of states to pick the same bird.

23. Kansas/Montana/Nebraska/North Dakota/Oregon/Wyoming - Western Meadowlark. Cool bird, slight deduction for so many states picking it.

16. Vermont - Hermit Thrush. 99% chance there is an indie band from Vermont with this name.

15. New Hampshire - Purple Finch. Homer pick, but balanced out by points deduction for being more red than purple.

14. Delaware - Delaware Blue Hen. Like that they have the balls to call it a "Hen" regardless of sex, but deductions for (a) not being an official recognized species and (b) being originally bred for cockfighting.

13. California - California Quail. Another homer pick, but I like that they went with a goofy quail instead of something trendier.

12. South Carolina - Carolina Wren. Bonus for changing it from the Northern Mockingbird.

11. Minnesota - Common Loon. Bonus for picking a loon. Also confirms the entire state of Minnesota is a Canadian sleeper cell.

10. Georgia - Brown Thrasher. Plain-looking bird, but major bonus points for the name.

9. Idaho/Nevada - Mountain Bluebird - Cool.

7. Missouri/New York - Eastern bluebird. Contrasting brown color makes it slightly better than the previous one.

6. Oklahoma - Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher. Mostly for the name.

5. Alabama - Yellowhammer. Mostly for the name.

4. Maryland - Baltimore Oriole. Obviously iconic.

3. South Dakota - Ring-Necked Pheasant. Cool. Can't believe only one state picked this one.

2. Louisiana - Brown Pelican. The whole "pelicans are terrifying" thing is a little played out now, but still iconic.

1. New Mexico - Roadrunner. Yes!

Interestingly enough, South Dakota's state bird isn't native to the area. Ring-necked pheasants were introduced from Asia.

I didn't understand why so many Midwestern states chose the Cardinal until I learned they feed each other mouth-to-mouth as ritual mating behavior.

I once won a t-shirt during my inprocessing at Barksdale by correctly answering the question "What is the nickname of Louisiana?" (The Pelican State) Thank you, John Grisham and my 6th grade teacher for making me memorize dumb state stuff.

Once I settle into my new place I hope a roadrunner eventually hangs out near it and I can feed it because they are cool looking birds.
