MLB 2016--April

Post by Rex »

Very much in favor of using this dead Sunday as an opening day of sorts.

Not at all in favor of unnecessary cold weather games. Was Thunder Bay, Ontario unavailable for this opener?

I have ignored all local media coverage of tonight's game save for coming downstairs when I had my TV on NBC a little bit ago. It was a local anchor sitting in one of the sections describing the stadium in a fake soothing voice asking viewers to pretend like they were at the stadium with her.

I changed the channel as fast as I could.

Wow, a rare fan-friendly move by the Yankees this morning (postponing before everyone got to the park). Looking at that forecast reminds me though of how depressing northern April weather is.

Yup. You get to St. Patrick's Day / Tournament Thursday and think "YES ITS GOING TO BE NICE AGAIN!" and then there's 3 weeks of grayness and rain.

Yankees may have announced early in part because of all the backlash from this weekend's notice that fans should show up at 11:00 for a 1:00 game to not have to deal with lines.

Don't worry. John Oliver is there to provide the appropriate take on Yankee Management's view of their fans.

I think this is pretty easy (hence no Gold Star), but who are the only 2 MLB managers who were alive when Vin Scully's career with the Dodgers began?

I've got four: Collins is right, then either Dusty, Showalter or Mackinen (sp?).

Collins and Dusty. There are some others who were alive when Vin became the full time announcer for good.

The Orioles have three players on their roster that they can't send down this season. One Rule V, one player out of options and a scrub from Korea who they signed to a contract that doesn't allow them to denote him (they tried, he refused, he's on the roster). He can't hit an MLB fastball.

You'd think it would be on a scouting report. He sucks in the OF and he's slow. So he can't PH, PR or be a defensive replacement.

Agreed.

Not sure why he would refuse to go to extended spring training. He'd rather ride the pine than be able to get in more work. Showalter isn't going to put him in a game unless it's a blowout. I asked BJ Surhoff about him when he got back from spring training and he just shook his head and said "not ready". Which is like 2 more words than he's said to me in the three years I've been working at Pathfinders.

Well, good Johnny Cueto is quite easy to root for. 98 pitches, 7IP 6H 1R 1ER 0BB 4Ks. Left after seven with 2-1 lead. May bad Johnny Cueto stay away for at least the normally scheduled six weeks or so. (or six months.)

I wonder if any kind of move off the 25 man would inactivate his control clause.

Other than the DL, he stays on the 25 man all season or they release him (from what I understand).

So here is the guy who does not speak the language (assumption), who is not going to play because he is not good enough, filing a roster spot on a team driven by a pie throwing player who is out there "making baseball fun again". I think the club house dynamics will be fun in Baltimore.

You know, I've never thought about it, but Baltimore is the one team in the AL East I've never looked at as fun or with a roster of guys having fun. Baltimore baseball seems not fun.

The last few years have been fun. Before that, not so much fun. Davis, Machado, Jones, O'Day, Britton and Schoop seem to really enjoy the camaraderie and the town.

Bautista and his "if I'm doing it its clearly the right thing to do and also fuck you for asking" attitude is going to make sure we don't miss a beat when Ortiz retires.

When you are out of contention in June/July....I have to believe playing them out can be tedious (especially if you are in a non-contract year).

Pence salami caps win over Dodgers in home opener (assuming a 12-6 lead survives the top of the ninth.)
