Re: MLB 2016--April
Nothing like a Dodgers/Giants game.
Their rookie, Ross Stripling, pitched 7.1 innings of no-hit ball. Walked a guy in the eighth, hit 100 pitches (coming off TJ surgery), pulled by rookie manager. Our rookie catcher, Trevor Brown, homered off the reliever, tied at 2.
ETA: forgot to mention, tonight was Stripling's major league debut.

Well, he's no Bumpus Jones, the only man to pitch a no hitter in his debut.

I still can't figure out how the crying Jordan thing became such a big deal like a half-dozen years after it happened. Especially with how quick the internet is to turn on anything considered "old."

So, if it wasn't going to be a DP in the first place, it should be one because the guy sliding into second didn't do it completely legally?

"Can't assume a double play", right? And even if there's no assuming because its so clear, the intent is to modify that behavior right out. Not "its illegal unless your teammate is fast".

Re: MLB 2016--April
That's why Jacoby was smart to get a slow and cautious start after a fly ball he still could have caught if he dove for but didn't. Gotta be safe in this game of baseball.

45 times either Zack Grienke or Felix Hernandez has given up one run or less and failed to get the W. Learned from Jonah Keri's the 30.

Braves Hector Olivera may be a bit late to the stadium today.

Dumping the Braves is the best thing I've ever done in my life (and I don't want to hear about how they dumped me). The last, oh, 85 games or so have been an absolute pleasure.

First random baseball stat chart of the year...
And that's going by first name in the baseball-reference database. Using actual birth name probably turns it into a giant obtuse angle

So...Bryce Harper...better than Trout now?
Dude is both raking and mashing. As the season goes along he's going to see less and less pitches of course, but I'm amazed at how close to early 2000s Barry Bonds he already seems to be at the plate.

Re: MLB 2016--April
I hope Heyward, Bryant, Rizzo, Zobrist, Russell, or Soler can get their averages over .250 so the Cubs can start winning some games.
More seriously, does anyone know where I could look on BB Ref, or maybe Fangraphs, to figure out how many runs the Cubs "should" have scored based on the value of their individual offensive events? I assume the Cubs have been lucky as hell so far, scoring 20 runs above average with general average offensive stats. But I'd like to see.

Re: MLB 2016--April
Been getting push alerts from MLB.com that so-and-so (Harper, yesterday) hit a "Papa Slam".
So I'm rightly thinking -- what the fuck is that? Fucking MLB is actually calling grand slams "Papa Slams" because of Papa John's. Ridiculous.

It looks like the Cubs' wOBA is about 3% above the NL average (.326 versus .316). But they are scoring more than 25% above the NL average (5.5 vs 4.4 R/G).

Re: MLB 2016--April
Its not linear (which is kind of a deep cut joke because wOBA is based on linear weights), but it looks like your expected runs would be 67 versus actual of 78.Steve of phpBB wrote:It looks like the Cubs' wOBA is about 3% above the NL average (.326 versus .316). Your mom takes the raw value of the linear weights that drive wOBA.
